Reminds me of my childhood trying to keep my old wrecks working for at least another month - no special tools, cheap oils and grease, dirty rags dipped in petrol to clean everything, re-used the gaskets where possible. Nowadays people spend more time polishing their tools rather than actually doing anything with them. Keep up the good work with the tools and skills you have.

Lovely relaxing video to watch. But for the benefit of anyone using this as a guide to rebuilding an engine: 1. Carefull where you're putting the yamabond. This can detach and end up in oil ways etc inside the engine. 2. Add a few drops of oil to the new piston and rings. Otherwise these will be totally dry when the engine is first started 3. Never ever use a screw driver to lock the clutch when tightening the shaft nut. Very lucky not to break the fingers off the clutch basket here.
I absolutelty agree with all three things you said, I have never seen an engine builder not put oil on a new two-stroke piston, he overdid the yamabond something fierce, and I was cringing at the screw driver, I also think he should have considered a new crank, and new basket, hub, pressure plate for the clutch. It was a really nice build but why go all the way and not replace some simple parts that could cause some major problems, metal shavings from the weak old clutch pieces will ruin an engine very quickly!
Had a 250MX in the late '70's.. had to tear it down due to my brother stomping on the shifter (bent the arms) and it always needed a new ring.. just about the same thing as this 125.. and this was a real good contrast to the Honda.. so much simpler. Anyway..Kiddo.. you're a PRO at this.. the guy that whines 'torque wrench' is lost about 100 engines ago....

I'm doing a DT125 at the moment, very similar engine. I see you put a gasket on the crank cases. And I would like to see how you set the Ignition timing. thanks Tim.
Very nice work on the engine. One suggestion - since you're going to all the trouble to replace pistons, rings, bearings and seals why not spring for $10 worth of hex socket cap screws to finish off the engine rather than using all of the old mangled JIS screws. It will make for a beautiful addition and make servicing in the future much easier. Cheers!
That is right about replacing jis screws with hex socket cap screws. I had to grind several jis screws after being corroded to the engine body on several of old Honda's.
Also wanted to add: I love the lack of music and talking. Just a guy steadily rebuilding a motor and the sounds of his tools. Well done.

I did this once. It wouldn't run afterwards, but I did fashion a pretty decent boat anchor out of the leftover spacers, washers and gears.
