Great Job! Just a suggestion, when spacing is needed between boards cut a spacer block and use it to get the same spacing between each strip. That will eliminate the need of having to measure the space between each strip.

Beautiful job! Watched several others and I certainly prefer your method and thouroughness.
A MAJOR BONUS: watching your son working hard, doing a darn good job and having father son pride in his work! Hubby and I loved that you actually let him do it and TRUSTED him, while guiding him through it. You've given him priceless tools and self esteem; he will carry that through life and know he achieve whatever he sets out to do because of what you just did and will continue to do with him.
Heart touching moment. That trust goes so, so far! Kudos and thumbs up.

Of all the DIY's on wainscoting I looked for, yours was the easiest. Thank you so much. I'm doing this work myself. No man in my life to bother. (haha) I'll send you a pic once i'm done.

Favorite part was letting the children help. Growing up us eight children were included in all projects in our apts and house. Learned many skills and trades!

You are a great dad. There is no better way to initiate good work habits and sense of worth in our kids than letting them participate. Patience is God's way of disciplining our kids where you never have to yell or hit them. Although my son was not born when I built my house, my grandson loves working with grandpa. I can't fell more joy with him next to me.
    The wall looks fabulous.
Scraping of the popcorn finish off is much easier. They make a tool for that to make it easy. I hope you kilz'd the wood first. Otherwise the knots will always surface. Painting the wall and trim first makes it super easy. Glue helps where there aren't any studs. I'm doing my living now and going to look into the furring strips. Thanks for the thought.

Good video, a couple tips from a similar project of mine. Rout the edges of the ledge so they are round, at 5 feet thats eye level for a lot of people, dont need to walk into a sharp corner. Use alcohol based primer on the wood, the dark knots will bleed through the paint within a year. Use floetrol additive when painting, gives it an enamel (smooth) look and not the eggshell look a roller will give you. That will make your wainscot have a different finish than the wall and will help seperate the look.

We use primed white pine finger joint stick from Lowes, Home Depot or trim stores. One to two coats of paint, no need to plane or sand. Good video for a simple board and batten wall. Loved seeing your son. Reminds me of my kids helping in my projects and now get to have a remodeling business with my youngest who is 25!

That looks really good Matt. I never realized you could just use your existing textured wall itself instead of paneling because the home I currently live in doesn't use drywall in the centers of its wainscot panels. Now that we are moving to a new home, I want to bring that same look to the new home. I think the only thing I want to change is how the wall is cut in half by a painted brick fireplace. Wife and I both hate panted brick and are trying to figure out how to "fix" what the previous home owners did to it. Maybe we can rough it up and tile over it?

Awesome job! I LOVE how you included your kids. Good life lessons for them, something a lot of kids will never get. One thing I'd suggest is doing your wall smoothing with joint compound applied with a 10-12" blade. It makes for a quicker job and flatter walls, less sanding.

First of all let me say you did a great job and you can be proud of the end result. One reason we all watch these videos is to learn from other folks' experience and think how we'd have done it differently. A couple of ideas I had...I agree with others that thin MDF sheet on the wall would have given you a great surface. I've also see a few other folks do this and I keep wondering why would you not prime all the wood first - even if you need to trim it. it would just need a bit of touching up but you could really save some time. In fact if you went for a 2-tone paint job you could prime and paint first. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to film this and inspire me to do something like this in my next home - I'm just looking to move house now!
