Thanks Doug, I appreciate your investment in materials and your time for checking this out. My most consistent quality wood has been Beavercraft in the 1x1.
Have you found random super-hard pieces/batches? I have 1x1s that carve like butter, but in the same box the 2x2s are harder than the Cherry/Walnut blocks I have. Wild, but it is beautiful wood and worth the effort to carve.
Just getting into wood carving and wanted to say I appreciate you taking the time to film, edit, and share your work. It's very informative and helpful to us beginners. Thank you very much.
These batches of wood are going to be the entry point for a lot of carvers and it's encouraging to know that someone as versed in carving as you would be just as happy to use it along with them.
I wholeheartedly agree with your stance on the 1x1 series - thoroughly enjoy it. I keep telling myself that I am going to carve as many as I have time to do of each project. Then, just when I’m getting into the groove, you add another 1x1 carving project. BY NO MEANS IS THAT A COMPLAINT!! 😅 Thank you for taking the time to share your passion for carving, whilst educating the masses along the way.
The 1x1 series is genius Doug!!! Provides excellent value for learning to carve and is very manageable to hold and cut for beginners!! So glad to hear theres more to come!!! Thank you!!!
Doug thank you for putting your time and energy into showing us these results. I’ve been buying exclusively from Robin Heinecke. Woods. Family own and operated in Cumberland Wisconsin. great service. cut to size
Hi Doug, CANUSA wood from Amazon is also good, with the occasional odd hard piece but wood is like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get….till you put a knife too it. Happy carving!!
Thank you for all your video’s Doug. I’m new in carvingworld and totally addicted to carving thanks to your tutorials. You have a great way of teaching. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Hi, I feel the same way, I recently learnt that "The Ukraine" is the old Soviet region name and as an independent nation just "Ukraine" is the preferred name. Have a great Christmas kind stranger.
LOL, I just bought a big pack of 1x1 for a free class at a show. I really believe your 1 x1 series is a fantastic way to get more people interested in carving. I will be leading people to your site. You do such a fantastic job!
I'm a fan of the 1x1 series because they are projects I can knock out in usually 30 minutes or less. I hate working on stuff that takes hours to carve!!
I got gifted a carving tool set recently and I'm going to use your series to get me started. I appreciate your time and commitment to teaching and reviewing wood for us beginners to use. Thank you.
Doug, this video was excellent for a beginning carver. Your videos about carving caught my eye. I'm going to bring some carving equipment with me while deer hunting in November. Thanks! And hello from Michigan, 👍🙂
I wish I could paint like you do on your carvings of hikers etc. It is so Beautiful.....I have been carving my second season so to speak, around end of October to about April as I am so busy in summer but I am getting gooder LOL I can only carve by watching, I can't just decide to carve something on my own yet.....So I am So Thankful for carving videos that I can follow along, I am in My Glory when I am carving, I wish I had tried years ago instead of waiting to carve in my late 60's but better Late than never I reckon.....About time for me to start carving again this Fall and I can't wait.....
Linden aka basswood, or Tilia, is a genus that includes about 30 species of trees, so not all linden wood is equally soft or white. You do a great job for all of us and it's very important for us everything you show us and everything we can learn from you. Don't worry about haters, ignore them and enjoy your wood, your knife and the beauty of carving! Be safe, healthy and yourself!
Thanks for your videos sir. You inspired me to start carving, and boy is it fun. I picked up some basswood from Michaels and it seemed really super tough to cut through with the knife I got from there. To be fare, the wood was 2x2 inch basswood blocks and im also very new. I found more success with a freshly cut 1 1/2 inch branch I cut from a tree. Anyway, huge thank you for your uploads. Very fun stuff!
Thank you Doug for this video. I live in Brazil, US stuff is too expensive, most stores won't even ship to me, so all I can get my hands on are local pinus or basswood from China. I'm a beginner, but I'm not having any problem using basswood from China and my Beavercraft knives. That's really the only way I found to keep the hobby within my budget. Keep the series coming, although I might make more then a few flat plane birds before moving on.
Love the 1x1 series. Now I have a purpose for my scrap wood. Used to throw it out. I bet I've carved 50 plus 1x1 items in past year. You come up with great ideas, please keep it up. I've been carving for more than 20 years and love it when I see more people taking it up.
That's very helpful, useful info. I am lucky to have some basswood on the wood lot. For those who don't, this is it, it's cheap and ships right to your door. Perfect! Thank you, Doug.
Doug, thank you for doing this to show what good basswood is like. I have been using basswood from my local lumber yard. Now I have a measure to use as a measure. Great video, and thanks to Billie.
Thanks for reviewing the different woods so we don't have to. It is a true artist that can see the beauty in the figuring of wood that others would overlook. Keep up the great work and thank you for taking us along for the ride.
Thanks for doing this great video on all the different sources of Basswood Doug. It helps to get the perspective of the wood from an expert carver like yourself.
Thank you Doug for doing this video. I like to do small compound cuts on my scroll saw and this was a great learning tool for me. I have to get all my 1x1 up to 2x2 from a wood speciality shop here in Halifax and it is very expensive. The MD Trade with the beautiful grain would be perfect for my birds. So enjoy your videos so keep them coming. Cheers from Nova Scotia! 😊
That was very helpful Doug. I have hand muscle issues and when I would end up with some hard basswood I blamed it on my hand issues. Now I know that some wood is softer than others. Thanks again.
As always.. inciteful…. Although as always, Amazon seems to charge what it wants…CAD$2.95 per stick for the Beavercraft 16 pack down here 😂🇦🇺…. On Aussie amazon there are loads of other brands too… never found a crappy one yet… i have found though a CanUSA brand from Wisonsin to be reasonably consistent… appreciate the update Doug 👍🏻
Doug, that was a very helpful video. Where to buy wood and wondering if that wood will be junk or not is a big concern for most of us. Very helpful thanks.
Great video. Thanks again for the thought and time that you have put into your research. Don't know of anyone else who would compare so many suppliers of wood. LOL. much appreciated. 😁🏴😊
Great video and very helpful for those of us that don't have yet the tools needed to tailor our pieces of wood. It will take some time, but we'll finally get to it. But in the meantime, this video is going to be very helpful to get already cut good wood at reasonable prices. Thank you so much for this review.
Thanks Doug!! I often wondered how good those woods were online. Excellent review and info. I have a bunch of basswood from a local tree. So far it’s been hard crap. So, firewood or power carving will likely be its future.
Nice one Doug, I'm new to carving ( it's something to do while out camping) so your videos have been a great source of information and inspiration for me. Thank you. Take care All the best D & B 👍 P.S. My Buddy wants to see more of Billie the doggo! 😂😅
The wind was not an issue and the information was very informative. I ordered from Amazon when you started the one by one series and was disappointed in what I received as it was a mixture of sizes, not all one by one. So I ripped the others down and found the mystery seller's wood was easy to carve. Now I need to find the time, or make the time to get back at it.
Thank you uncle Doug for your investment! Very informative. In Europe, particularly in Italy some stores like “home depot” have Ayous (or named Obeche) wood. Is a little bit softer and cheaper than Basswood. Is the wood used typically for creating the painting’s frame.
@@davidvitale9338 I agree. Paying by check is comical in 2024, but it's the best wood! On top of that everything is planed perfectly and delivered "clean".
I have bought 1 x 1 and 2 x 2 from Beavercraft several times and it has been excellent wood each time. I will try Chipping Away and Treeline next time I order some. Thanks for the great video.
You make it look a bit easier than I would find it, due to the strength that you have developed in your your hands and fingers, but a great presentation that may get me back into a bit of carving.
Thanks Doug, I appreciate your investment in materials and your time for checking this out. My most consistent quality wood has been Beavercraft in the 1x1.

Thank you, great as always. I can't help but want to support anything from The Ukraine at the moment, so I'm glad the wood has a good review.

My wife got me carving stuff for christmas. And that beaver craft wood has been really good for me

Appreciate you taking the time to test this out!
Awesome video, thank you Doug for sharing the video.
Thank you for the review. It helps a lot to know what is out there for bass wood.

The last two I got off of Amazon was ridiculously hard. Wish I would have been that lucky. :)

Very helpful & informative video. Thanks, Doug! I too, am quite shocked at the results!
Thanks doug for the 1x1 series i just started carving.

They will only ship within the US

Great video. I can cut wood but have bought the one by one from a few places. Only had one piece that I called to hard to carve. Fun carving everyone
I lucked in asking around local and got a trailer load from a local mill. Basswood isn’t common but all you need is one lol.
