    the illumination provided in these few minutes (2 Fr R videos on sloth) - I FINALLY got up and took care of something I’ve been buried under but unable prior to even begin.
    I’ve listened to countless hours of advice and methods to overcome procrastination, “functional freeze”, adhd, productivity, etc. to no tangible result.
    God is the piece that’s been missing this whole time.

    He mentions TV, but not the computer or the phone ... which I note because I currently don't have a TV, and when I do have one, I don't tend to sit idly watching it -- I'll have mending or paperwork in my hands. But that's not possible with the computer, and I can get wrapped up in all that's on the internet... or social media (on my phone especially). The good thing is that I came across these videos by Fr. Ripperger, which has helped my spiritual growth....but it can just as easily lure me to cat videos. I fight it, but some days those cats are just so cute! Thank you for posting this -- now I know to pray for and foster diligence to battle the cats.

    The moment I fully acknowledged this is a problem, things clicked into place. I now know what has been the underlying principle to all my problems all this time. This video is now my guide. Praise be to God for revealing to me my REAL problem. Somehow, no secular self-help book was able to reveal to me what my real problem was. The 7 Deadly Sins need to be read again by Catholics!

      @46 58 Hmm, let me check who wrote the Bible... Hmm, let me see, OH, LOOK! Catholics did! So, you say that Catholics are pagans, and that the truth comes from the Bible, but the Bible was written by - accordin to you - pagans? Man, your lucidity is nothing but amazing!

    • @ulysses_grant
      @ulysses_grant 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @46 58 Well, you seem to know a lot about that so called "Lucy" you are telling me, so I won't argue about that. If you worship your Lucy, it's all on you, lol. Well, you tell me it was a rewrite, your lucidity keeps aweing me! Seems that some catholics had wrote the Bible in the first centuries, then 1500 years after Luther discovered that it was a rewrite, and REWROTE it to make it original. You are awesome btw, I mean, at least you are a man of great faith! You believe that the Bible was rewritten by Catholics and that a Pope knows the lord's prayer better than Christ himself. You seem to believe a lot of things people tell you about the Catholic Church, and you believe firmly that everything you know is the absolute truth, not because it is, but because some pastor told you, and because for you it made sense, and then it's true for you. That's so sweet! You also seem to never had studied the Catholic Church by yourself, and even with this attitude you still believe everything that your Luther put in your little head is truth! Oh mine, you are such a smart kid!

      @@ulysses_grant Hi. It is working for me and doing my best to maintain this, now good habit of diligence (16 hours a day of work w/ lunch and intervals of rest and 7 to 8 hours of sleep). Happy easter, Christ is risen! With prayer, fasting too is helping discipline myself against procrastination. I have a tight schedule now, w/ 25 minutes of focused work in d most important task (after the morning prayer) first thing, immediately after getting up, I then take 2 to 5 minute breaks. I workout as well and get 8 hours of sleep. I schedule my TH-cam and social media twice a day. It's not rigid but this is how I guide my time now. I also use Pomodoro technique (it's timer heavy). I write what I will do the next day (all events have a time duration). This is on top of prayer and fasting (one full meal equivalent a day only, meat and softdrinks once on a weekend. I also digest thoroughly, at a nice pace (w/ noise cancellation or earmuffs), books like Learn How to Learn to upgrade my skills, in this pandemic. But prayer w/ fasting is making it mostly possible- self-control and discipline. I also put my phone to silent mode, until it's time to check social media, emails (12pm and 6pm), unless I'm waiting for a truly very important notification. I also use a Mac, hide the Dock and menu and change the background every 5 minutes and just have one app displayed on the screen at a time (by hiding the other apps- they are still open buy hidden, until I need one of the other apps). Ignoring what is not going to improve my short term goal (usually pleasure and entertainment like chats). All goals must not deviate from the ultimate goal of becoming a great saint and the long term and midterm goal also must conform with the ultimate goal (they come after the short term goal which is divide into even shorter goals or steps to get to the shorter goal which may be different for each one). Stay safe, boost the immune system.
      I also think of nothing but the good things that happened in my day, every little good thing and block out all negative thoughts that's trying to creep upon sleeping, so that it's faster and easier to sleep, no stress and I save more time by sleeping faster. The things to improve for the day are done after waking up, during a rest interval (2 to 5 minutes). This is the guiding light of my day, now which I will keep improving, to become as diligent and doing this diligence with great love and patience like bestfriend Jesus, bestfriend Mother Mary, bestfriend St. Joseph and all the bestfriend saints. Sunday is totally rest day, things that are enjoyed are done (lots of movies, hobbies that need long hours, long conversations). I also distance/spend less time myself from people and block out people if needed (last resort and very rare) that are not helping with the goal done with great patience and kindness and diplomacy to be able to focus on the short term and ultimate goals.
      God bless, Revelation 21:4

    I listen to many Holy sermons like this and I look around me and I beg God like the disciples "Who then can be saved?" Even if you eventually find the correct religion, which I know is the Holy Roman Catholic church, there are yet so many snares to overcome. I beg the Lord again "Who then can be saved?". It seems one almost has to be like the stylites who lived on top of a pillar for 40 years in all weathers for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Who among us is this heroic?Save us Lord Jesus!

    I have been lapsed for a while. I prayed to God to please guide me. Since he has brought me to very relevant books and talks. You have been apart of that Fr Ripperger and I thank you for sharing your knowledge with us online. Sloth is my main issue in life, earthly life as well as spiritual life. Knowing that it does greatly affect my spiritual life has given me the motivation as well as the keys yo overcoming it. Thank you for outlining the ways in which I can overcome it. Thank you for making things practical and for talking about them at all. I only realised sloth was an actual sin rather than just a symptom of sadness or depression because of my Latin Mass Missal. Even though we don’t have access to regular Latin Mass here (once a month) I still find the Missal to be one of my favourite resources for learning, prayer and scripture reading. Thank you for outlying the ways I can overcome my defects. Bless you dear Father.

    I have noticed that in our country being majority Catholics, our priests, are mostly suffering from a kind of sloth. It is reflected in their daily homily. I just hope that the bishops would try to do something about it. This does happens in the dioceses of the provinces. May they discover you and your channel. It would be a great help for the priests.

      If you have ADHD and OCD, both of which are exhausting in themselves ( I have children with both plus depression ) I would suggest a visit to a competent psychiatrist ( trust me, we have hit some very incompetent ones )
      Please do not call yourself slothful. God knows what you are going through and loves you so deeply.

    I'm prone to sloth, spiritually and in some other ways---a procrastinator. But sitting around doing nothing? Watching TV? I'd go stir-crazy! My fault is in overdoing productive and good things I enjoy at the expense of other things I ought to be doing at a particular time. Example, I'd rather plan tomorrow's dinner than clean the dishes from the meal we just finished. But which cook wants to wake up to a sink full of dried on cruddy dishes? Not I!

    What about ADHD and chronically low dopamine? Getting the motivation to start a task can feel like trying to trudge through wet cement because our brains don't give us the dopamine reward like neruotyoical people's brains do. I know this is a cross to bear, but does mental health issues lessen one's culpability?
    I'm not talking about being motivates to pray or help others. Those come more easily than going through my piles of half-finished attempts to finally get organized.

    Sloth is a sorrow at spiritual things. There is a certain coldness to it which depresses the soul. There's a certain tedium felt. The virtue of diligence is the opposite of sloth and is energizing for you. Sloth is principally in the irascible appetite and often represents a lack of fortitude. Not doing the good because of the arduousness involved. Sorrow that arises from the presence of an evil. The evil that the appetite sees is the difficulty in pursuing something good (e.g. prayer, etc.). Weakness in the will. The trajectory of sloth is mediocrity. Sloth is a certain complaisance or satisfaction with the pleasures of the body (i.e. from sleeping in or just lying around). Sloth is a mortal sin if reason consents to the horror or detestation or flight from spiritual goods, otherwise venially sinful. Inquietude of the body. Manifestations: sleeping in without sufficient reason, not going to bed on time, mediocrity/lack of pursuit of excellence, idleness, too much television watching.
    Daughters of sloth: sin of negligence - neglecting the duties of your state in life (e.g. married or priestly duties), sin of idleness - taken hold of our society through screens and such overuse of entertainment (eutrapelia - right recreation) sitting and doing nothing all day long, despair - because when a person recognizes that spiritual goods are difficult and you're stuck in your complecency you despair that you are not going to be saved, pussilanimity - not pursuing the greatness of soul that God has called you to in your state in life, rancor/spite - hatred arising from the indignation of others (they see others pursuing the good and seek to find faults in them to make themselves feel better), malice - the slothful person becomes malicious because he doesn't want anyone interrupting he's lying around (leads to anger), lust and gluttony tend to follow right after, loquaciousness - pleasure out of talking and no primary concern with doing his job.
    How to overcome it? Charity - burning with love for God and for neighbor for the sake of God, prayer, spiritual reading, self-denial/mortification (overcomes the fear of engaging in the good), cultivating the virtue of hope (faith is not enough, hope that you can attain the goal), practice the natural virtues of diligence & fortitude.

    Oswald Chambers noted that in the eyes of the world Jesus appeared to be lazy, because he was a homeless man, without a family, who simply went around saying things.

    • @fleurdufleuve9089
      @fleurdufleuve9089 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Jeremy Blake Nelson I'm sorry I don't know who Oswald Chambers is, but I would respectfully counter this by pointing out that Jesus was first of all respected as a teacher who was known to have studied the Scripture diligently. We can also surmise that He was diligent in completing tasks at home as a lad, because after His parents found him in the Temple, though He got a little sassy, His Mother set Him straight, and He went home with them "and was obedient in all things." Presumably this would mean assisting His father, Joseph, with carpentry or handyman tasks. His neighbors would have known that about Him, furthering His reputation. It was only as He began to reveal His nature as the Son of God that they became upset with Him and scoffed at Him.

    • @fullfist
      @fullfist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Let me seriously retort to this blasphemous remark; (sloth; not doing what you're supposed to be doing when you're supposed to be doing it, vocation, duty, state in life - God's Will):
      1. Christ during His Holy three years of ministry could principally be titled as The High Priest. The priest is called Alter Christus.
      In going about "His Father's business" He spared no mortification, no physical or spiritual effort in order to reach His lost sheep and fulfill the work of Salvation. The apostles themselves tell us that if all the miracles and works that He did were to have been written down not even all the books in the world could hold them.
      2. This is not even taking into account His life of taking care the Blessed Virgin Mary and helping His earthly father st. Joseph put bread on the table. A noble, contemplative life interspersed with calm excellence in corporal works. In fact, this is the longer and more hidden part of Christ's life nevertheless revealed to saints and Holy Tradition.
      3. Lastly, the corrupt new world wants to exalt immediate output (amassing wealth) over the more valuable spiritual works, corporal work should benefit us spiritually, never impede the contemplative love of God. We see how in the Revolutionary, Marxist or Industrialist idea of the worker that is primarily interested in busying the masses with avaricious and disorderly toil, away from God. A hatred of priests, monks and nuns is manifested in the Revolution.
      "But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her."- Luke 10,42

      fullfist in the case of the New Testament, knowledge is not power, it is damming. You people are that naive that you actually believe Yahweh would flood the earth to cleanse it of the nephilim, a by product of humans breeding with angles, only to turn around and do the same thing himself. That after issuing his commandments to you, that he would deliver unto you someone other than himself to worship? That he would suddenly change from obey me or else to turn the other cheek, forgiveness? Christianity is the work of the one you all call the devil, it is the greatest wool he has managed to pull over your eyes using concepts like mercy and forgiveness in order to claim you. He has you all praying to him and has attached his device to the bible getting all of you to forsake Yahweh and his commandments. I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD. YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GOD'S BEFORE ME. YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FOR YOURSELF AN IMAGE IN THE FORM OF ANYTHING IN HEAVEN ABOVE OR ON THE EARTH BENEATH OR IN THE WATERS BELOW. YOU SHALL NOT BOW DOWN TO THEM OR WORSHIP THEM; FOR I, THE LORD YOUR GOD, AM A JEALOUS GOD, PUNISHING THE CHILDREN FOR THE SIN OF THE PARENTS TO THE THIRD AND FOURTH GENERATION OF THOSE WHO HATE ME, BUT SHOWING LOVE TO A THOUSAND GENERATIONS OF THOSE WHO LOVE ME AND KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS. YOU SHALL NOT MISUSE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD. The first 3 of the ten commandments are specific instructions to not do exactly what Christianity is doing. Cloud everything "HE" does though, distorting words until the right combination was found that worked. You accepted him into your hearts with arms wide open. It is nothing short of heresy and no matter your intentions you belong to "HIM" now.

    Wow, what a depressing talk!
    There is no mention of clinical depression or old age - except to tell seniors that they should be going to daily Mass and Holy Hour.
    Judgement is all I can hear. I am 66. How old are you? I can tell you that there is a huge difference in what one is capable of doing at different ages. It is not so cut and dried as you infer. Wait until you age, and see how you feel. It is difficult to picture how one will be at a certain age, when you have not yet reached that age. It may be completely different to what you imagine.
    I do not believe watching TV is wrong, nor is sleeping in if one able on certain days. You have listed so many rules, no one but the most perfect soul could follow them all. Yikes - no rest! And yet God gave us a day of rest. Plus, we pray " Be still and know that I am God. "
    I have suffered from clinical depression since my teen years. It was called " laziness " by my East European mother. Of course, I never mentioned how I felt ever again; I simply internalized it and confided in no one. You remind me of my mother. Talk about inspiring guilt.
    I am a night person. I tend to work well at night, full of energy that I did not have in the day. That is why most of my housework as a stay at home mom was done at night. Not being a parent, especially a stay at home mom, you would have no idea how exhausting the work is. Many women put their children in day care and go to work, because it is easier than staying home with little ones. So calling moms lazy as an outside observer is truly unkind and shows a complete lack of understanding of motherhood.
    I now suffer from a disorder called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I am called lazy by many people, except my husband. He knows how hard I worked throughout our 43 year marriage and how difficult my children were. I had 3 special needs children out of 4, and also mostly brought up my granddaughter for 12 years.
    At 61, I suffered a number of different traumas, psychological and physical. And those traumas, along with my exhaustion from my children, left me in a state I could not describe. I began to be unable to do even the basic activities of daily living. My husband has slowly become my caretaker. It is not fun, but I understand how limited I am in my activities. One has to overcome feeling useless and has to learn to ignore the labelling of " laziness " from most people.
    A talk like yours could be counterproductive for those who are already suffering and now will feel guilty about the lives they live. Fortunately, I have faced many challenges, was an RN, and have been on medication for psychiatric disorders that I understand very well, so your talk does not affect me. However, I can see how it could be detrimental to many poor suffering souls who do not understand what exactly is wrong with them.
    Now they can just feel guilt, thanks to you.

      paula proulx Your case doesn’t describe sloth... Fr Ripperger isn’t judging anyone. He is just preaching.

      Dr Sandeep Parwaga Well, his preaching is judgemental. It could cause many mentally unwell people to blame themselves for their situation - a situation over which they have no control.
      A priest who describes people in term of “ temperaments “ is not someone I find to be using science in the discerning of mental illness versus sinfulness. Let’s just say I am not a fan.
      If you think his preaching is valid, then listen to him. I will not be listening.

      @drsparwaga 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      paula proulx That’s incorrect. Fr Ripperger has addressed mental illness in other sermons as a scientific issue (chemical imbalance for example) and a demonic oppression/possession issue (depending on individual cases of course). You haven’t listened to other videos of his have you?
      As I said, your case doesn’t describe sloth. He is talking about genuinely lazy people who literally vegitate in front of a TV with beer in their hand (like a lot of people now a days do), even though they have the mental and physical ability to be different.

      Dr Sandeep Parwaga Still judgemental. I have children with addictions whose behaviour has been appalling. Have you experienced addiction? It is not pretty and the addicted person can appear “ useless “ in the Church’s eyes. Yet they are suffering terribly. Or they may be suffering from childhood traumas - my granddaughter was abandoned by her father at age three. She has had a great deal of issues now in her teens that debilitate her in many ways.
      Mental illness and other such related issues are very complex problems that should be dealt with in the same manner as physical and obvious illnesses - with kindness, mercy and empathy, but most of all prayer.
      I have known of people who had been making progress in their struggle with their mental illness and ended up back in hospital because of what a priest said in his sermon.
      I have heard Fr. Rippinger on the subject of “ temperaments “ which I found distressing. I am not interested in reading anything he has written.

      I'm old. If the real reason is to pace oneself and not overdo it, that's fine, but if we have the physical energy to do, we should. And he has a point about spiritual practice. That is something we can do even if we are weak physically. Too many old people veg out in front of the tube and have care givers doing things that if they got up and moved, would actually make them healthier.
