Great editing. You've got a good formula and flow to your videos. You don't pretend to know everything and take us on a trial and error journey we can all actually relate to. Refreshing and fun...keep up the great work brah! Aloha from Hawaii!

Who doesn't miss Jason Koertge and his superior editing of his 4Runner videos as well as his DIY can do attitude. He helped me understand more about the 4Runner than Toyota ever did. Poor guy, using hand tools. All cordless impact or nothing. Extensions needed. Kitty is cool.

Here’s a tip: never use a torque wrench to break a nut loose. That can cause it to come out of calibration. Either grab a bar to slide over the ratchet to extend leverage or get a breaker bar!

He should have used a half inch ratchet or breaker bar, to break them loose. Thereafter he can return to his 3/8 ratchet!

I bought the full steel setup for maximum strength, added about 110 lbs total (without filler plate). I dont plan on adding a new bumper or bull bars or a roof rack with ladder, so weight shouldn't be an issue.
On my short time driving with the plates installed, I definitely noticed a change in body sway during slow speed quick turns. Felt more centered and steady. Them steel plates definitely lowered the center of gravity

For those curious on weight the RCI engine, trans, and transfer case package in aluminum weighs in at about 75-80 pounds if you also get the bumper filler plate that protects the radiator gap in front of the engine skid. The factory engine and trans skid I took off weighed in between 20- 25 pounds. Net gain is 50-55 pounds.

Great videos. I have the steel RCI skids on my 16 Trail and I get a serious rattle when I put her in reverse. Josh at RCI was great and explained that a washer between the transmission skid should fix it.

  • @ryanevans5907

Breaker bars are your friend, Jason! Also, you may want to put some blue lock-tight on those bolts to keep water out, as I have the aluminum RCI skids as well and the bolts suffered quite a bit of corrosion in the first year. Great video as always!

Great channel! I have the RCI skids too. "Pro tip": Back the bolts out & put some anti seize grease on them. Skids collect all the muck from the trails and you are going to want to remove them to spray them off. 2nd exhaust pipe comes in contact with the Transfer case skid. Use an exhaust wrap on that pipe or you will hear a metal on metal rattle.

  • @Diablo169er

Awesome videos! But since everyone else is picking on you, I'll add something. I always toss extra jack stands under my rig when I'm getting under it. I don't trust $.50 worth of Chinese plastic. I had a close call when I was 19 and ever since then I make sure I'm over protected.
And the new 18v-20v impact tools will make quick work of those bolts.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Max Haha. Thanks. That’s a good idea with the jack stands. There’s actually plenty of room for me to crawl around under there without anything lifting it up. I just rode it up on the stands to make things a little more convenient. If the plastic was to have crushed, it would have been scary, but I’d still have been cleared.

I have the same skid set on the way for my 2016 as well as their tank skid and sliders. The stock tank skid seems pretty thin and the tank hangs so low.
A couple tips: Loosening the frame end of those braces would have relived the downward pressure. For breaking loose tight fasteners, get as close to the bolt or nut as you can. Use a short socket if you have room and no extension if you can do without. Makes for better leverage and fewer skinned knuckles. Once loose use whatever is easiest.
    I do enjoy your videos.

  • @chrisharney2893
    @chrisharney2893 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I can't read through all the comments to see if anyone has touched on this, but I scrolled through the video looking to see if you had installed the (2) 3 hole L brackets that should have come with the transmission skid plate, and it doesn't look like you did in the video, maybe you did afterward. If you were wondering why you had those brackets and 6 carriage bolts and nuts left over, that's why. You install them on the top of the plate to add structural support if you end up leveraging the vehicle on an obstacle or come down hard on a rock. Anyway, thanks for the vids, they are a good source for how to make some of these DIY projects easier.

Take a large socket and long extension and use that on your ratchet handle to break em loose (or get a dedicated pipe that works). You dont need alot of fancy tools, I had nothing when I started, you just have to learn to work with what you got. I have all the fancy tools but I could do 95% of what I do with the tools you got and knowledge just takes more time.

Loved this one, I bought my TRD Pro with the RCI skids already installed, but loved learning how it was done in case I need to remove (probably have to repaint after this last trip) mine. How long have you been making videos? Your music transitions and video cuts are so great. I'm sure it's something you've learned over a long time. People will hate on the "Casey Neistat style" but it's so good when done properly.

I wish my rig was a toyota with skids already, yes they are pretty thin (the ones I have seen are around 1/8 or thinner punched tin, mpg numbers) thick enough for light rocks if your careful but if you live in a area like mine not going to cut it for any real offloading. I am watching for design ideas for my skids that I need to build.

Sorry, it's actually a royal pain to look up the songs, I don't mean to be difficult or seem unwilling to help, just short on time, usually. That song is Unbreakable Spirit, by Andrew Applepie and I believe the album is called the same thing. You'll probably have to join his community to find it as I think it's pretty old.

Those are rated recovery points in the front or so Toyota/the manual claims

I concur. Everything I have read from the manual to other forums come to the conclusion they are recovery point rated.

dude buy a breaker bar at harbor frieght then a torque wrench.
breaker bar to remove bolts, torque to tighten, never use the torque to remove it will make the wrench useless and out of calibration.

The problem with buying torque wrenches is that getting them calibrated can be a issue.

you need to buy some tools. 😊. torque wrench at the very least.

I'm thinking he doesn't do enough of this sort of work to justify spending a lot on tools. A torque wrench is only good if the part maker specifies the appropriate values. I have a BMW motorcycle and BMW specifies a torque value on just about every fastener. I haven't seen the same information on my 4 runner or my Yamaha motorcycle. Maybe its a German thing about those specs...

I have a torque wrench but nothing called for specific torque on anything with this mod.

dahveed284 even if the instructions didn’t specify torque, it’s not a bad idea to pick one and use it. its also good as a breaker bar. how does he deal with lug nuts? I just can’t fathom not having a great tool roll with me or my garage full of tools, but I diy almost everything (and own 3 vehicles including a Land Rover). No hate though, everyone has to learn at their own pace. I see way too many new ‘overlanders’ who don’t know the first thing about wrenching and don’t even install their own mods. Sounds expensive and potentially trip ending.

Maybe grab an impact wrench. Saves me plenty of time on my 4R rec work

eLGuidoAM I agree. I have the compact Milwaukee battery impact. Makes certain projects a breeze

Thanks for the video. I have the steel RCI skids and today I changed my transfer case fluid. I was disappointed in realizing that I had to remove the skid plate. There is no hole in the transfer case skid for some reason while there are holes for the engine and transmission drain plugs on the other skid plates. The strange thing is that the black, steel cross-member support piece for the transfer case does include a hole so that doesn't need to be removed (thankfully). Why the actual skid plate does not, I have no idea. Changing transfer case oil is such a simple job but now it's a pain knowing that the skid plate has to be removed. I've contacted RCI today in hopes they can provide an explanation of why there isn't a hole in the first place. I will be taking my skid plate to a machine shop tomorrow to mill out an opening so I don't have to take this off again.
Word of warning: The aluminum skids plates bend and can crack really easily on rocks. I purchased the aluminum RCI front skid and cracked the welds doing a trail in Big Bear, CA (White Mountain Trail). I was really surprised. But, RCI came through though and sent me a new steel skid plate to replace it. It's much heavier but it seems to take a lot more punishment.
