DEUCE AND GUNS I've owned a Mossberg 71 5T (same gun different shell) and if you want to lock the bolt back what you should try and do is pull back on it all the way back and then push in on it, that should lock it back.

For anybody questioning whether or not to buy this, I say DO IT! I was gifted one in 2007, from my grandfather. I shot a brick of Federal at least once a month, all the way until 2019. In 12 years I didn’t clean it a single time, totally neglected the poor thing. I’m 19 and actually clean my guns now lol, and to this day this gun has never failed me.

@@burtrandolph1745 haha that's great, as a brit that's definitely interesting, it's usually adulthood till you get firearms here, you can younger if it's gifted but for rifles the age is 14 to possess and 18 to buy, yeah a 22 rifle you need to be 14 but shotguns don't have an age requirement to possess iirc just purchasing which is 18

I also bought the mossburg that looks like an AR-15, its the same gun as the 702 just different furniture. Both are excellant little .22". I got the 'AR' IN 2013. both guns have performed flawlessly. I have no idea what the price range is these days but if ya want a 2w for fun or small game withoutbreaking the bank pick up on one. Their definatly cheaper than my AR-15 and the ruger mini 14...........so, I like guns. Of course the wife doesn't much care for my collection, they make me happy......

It is based on a tried and true 60 yo design and is made with quality materials and craftsmanship. The plastic furniture seems cheap but it is tough and accurately fit. For a hundred bucks you cannot do better. It's a good buy at $150. If you want better you probably own a CZ or a Browning.

Hey BC, thanks for the good review. I bought my Mossberg .22 Plinkster last year
on lay away at Walmart. Same price as yours $99.00 and i picked it up in December.
As you say it is very lightweight and a bit nose heavy for me. I removed the plastic Butt plate
and saw the Polymer butt stock was hollow. To give my Plinkster at bit more heft and better balance
I took 25 rounds of .22 LR ammo and wrapped it in plastic bag and placed that in the hollow stock
with some packing to keep it from shifting. It makes it feel much better balanced for me and now
I know where I can always find an extra 25 rounds of ammo.
I am 58 yo and due to diabetes ( and just getting old ) my eyes are not what they once were. The iron sights are
good and very visible but at 25 yards on the bench I was not getting the groups I knew i could. I bought at Walmart online
a BSA 4X32 scope for $26.99 on sale. After I got it sighted in I was able to get groups I could cover with a nickel at 25 yards.
I have put about 300 rounds through it with almost no malfunctions. I had a few fail to feed issues with Winchester Super X.
    It loves CCI Blazer ammo.
For $99.00 I think it is exceptional value for the money.

Bought this at a Black Friday sale with a brick of CCI Mini-Mag for 110.00. Took my then 13 year old daughter to the range. After I sighted it in I handed it to her.
I have no idea where her first shot went, but after I got her to calm down and relax, she took the bullseye completely off the target with the next 20 rounds. This was at 10 meters.
She now has a red dot on it [her choice] and can put 10 out of 10 in the paint at 75 meters.
She also now has the M&P 15/22 and is eyeing my 556.
Her 702 loves CCI mini-mag and completely devours the Aguila 22 super X.
After about 1000 rounds, I think we had maybe ten FTF or ejects.
For a starter rifle, this is perfect. Not a big investment in case the kid doesn't take to it.
She wanted to put the "Muddy Girl Pink" skin on it, but I'm not putting a 150.00 skin on a 100.00 rifle.

    Hi,
I think I heard you say that it took 50 rounds to get the scope happy...
Thought you might find this helpful and interesting.
I have a complete collection of the American Rifleman dating from the 1930's and remember and article from that source that offers one shot scope adjustment.
Bore sight the rifle just as you described but basically only enough to ensure that you get the first round on paper. Once at that point, at 25, 50 or whatever yardage you wish. Place the cross hairs on the bull's eye or aiming point and touch off the round. Let say the bullet struck the target in the outside ring at the one o:clock position.
    Now... the magic.
Return the cross hairs to the aiming point and WITHOUT MOVING the rifle, adjust the cross hairs to the bullet hole.... Voila..!!Maybe another shot or two to prove that you have zeroed the scope but unless you flinched or otherwise screwed the pooch, the scope and bullet hole are one and the same.
    Enjoy,
Ed in the middle of Wyoming

Upgraded one with a thumb hole tactical stock I purchased from Mossberg along with a a 3-9X40 scope with see through mounts to still use the iron sights and an extra 25 round magazine. I bought one of these a couple years ago. The name plinkster pretty much tells just what the rifle is intended for, and is in fact, exactly made for. I stuck a cheap 4x one inch scope on it, since my 60 year old eyes are not as good as they used to be, and I can run pop cans down the trail, or I can hit a squirrel in the head at 25 yards, pretty much every time. And I have found that at least for me, it is not ammo sensitive at all. I can use bulk box, cheap stuff, all the way up to Aquilla target ammo, and still get pretty much the same 1" group at 25 yards, on a normal day. I of course have to do my part, and wind does have an effect. But I recommend buying this for your grandkids, if you have more than one, just as a starter gun. I don't think they will find them to be too long or heavy, and they will learn good shooting habits with a gun that will at least last them until they are ready to buy their own, maybe higher quality .22 LR. CZ does make some nice ones, and my brother has an Anschutz that is a gem.

I bought a 702 Plinkster for $112.00 at Walmart, last Fall. It retails for $189.00. I've fired over 300 rounds through it with no problems. I've been using the Browning 40 gr BPR hollow points. Haven't tried any other ammo yet. It seems to like the Browning's, just fine. It's very light, fun to shoot, and fairly accurate with the factory sights. I also have a Ruger 10/22 (love it) and a late 40's Marlin, model 81 bolt action with a peep sight, which is a hand full, compared to the Plinkster. My Plinkster is my new camping rifle.

You are confusing the word "Cheap" with "Inexpensive". While the Mossberg (CBC) model 702 is "Inexpensive to own, it is not "Cheap" in either it's build, parts material or execution of build. It is a very good first rimfire rifle for those not wishing to over spend on a fun "Plinking" rifle. You can purchase an inexpensive Simmons variable power 2x7, or 3x9 scope (22-Mag, model) that comes with the scope rings/bases for the tip-off groove for under $35 dollars via eBay. As to accuracy, firing the gun from a standing off-hand position is not how one should attempt zero any gun, even at only ten yards, little lone attempt to judge the firearms accuracy potential. As to accuracy with any .22 it is best to purchase 50 round of various types and find what the gun wants to shot, not just what's least expensive.

    • @fdmackey3666

Thanks for the kind response. I was unsure how I should word my comment about the rifle you reviewed. I DID see the "Mossberg" at our local Walmart a few days ago but paid it very little attention since, at that particular store, .22 ammo of any kind or brand is rare indeed. I handled the rifle briefly but it just seemed "wrong" to me some how and I kept my wallet in my pocket. A few hours later I strolled into the pawn shop I mentioned and while looking at other guns noticed the Model 60. I've owned, plinked with, and hunted with several 60s over the years but always managed to find a reason to trade them for something else leading shortly to sellers remorse if you know what I mean. I'm 62 now, so when I buy the Model 60 at the pawn shop in the morning I'm going to hold onto it till one of us wears out. I think the rifle might have an advantage over me in that department.

And a GREAT introductory rifle to see if the kids, wife (or you) are going to be interested in taking up shooting and/or hunting and if the kids drop it, whack it on a tree, etc. then... No arm, no foul. And as long as it shoots you'll always get a hundred bucks back on a shooting rifle, so... Heck yes you want one!

This weapon is very sentimental to me; my father bought this for me on my 8th birthday. I've had it ever since, and I've only been satisfied with this rifle.

I look at my wall, upon which hangs a myriad of firearms. Resting in the corner, butt on the ground, undeserving, I think to myself, of a spot on the wall. There lies my Mossberg 702 plinkster. My late father got it for me 10+ years ago for my 12th birthday. I’d never given it much thought until I watched this video. I go over and replace a gun on the wall with the plinkster. I quietly mutter ‘Thanks pop’.

The legally mandated trigger lock that most people don't need added at least $5 to the $99 retail price. It's another mild form of infringement.
Locking the bolt back on the magazine follower is a common practice. My Kel-Tec SU-22C does this.
On the other side of the spectrum, I just ordered a Magnum Research MLR22ATUT from my FFL. It's due here in a few days. It's basically the upgraded and accurized version of the 10/22, with a carbon fiber wrapped barrel. Like everyone else, I wish .22 LR ammo wasn't so expensive. It takes a lot of the fun out of plinking. I spent a lot more on ammo than you spent on the Mossberg 702 Plinkster. I have 110 varieties of 22 LR ammo to test for accuracy and reliability in a couple of firearms. That should be a long but fun day at the range.
Great review! I was fairly impressed by the accuracy, particularly for the money spent on the rifle and the mostly inexpensive bulk pack ammo you were using.

Liberty4Ever you got that right. I can get my 7.62x54r for cheaper than I can find .22 locally. online I can find it about the same price. now that's total cost not cost per round. cheapest I can find the mosin food is about 25 cents a round.

I get 22lr for $7 and some change per 100 rounds- where can you get 7.62x54 for that price ?
Now 22 mag is almost impossible to find and it's as high as my 9mm ammo when I do find it :(

In America the cheapest 22 is a semi $99, in Australia the cheapest 22 is a bolty $600+

    • @keithlarsen7557
      @keithlarsen7557 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

600 dollars? My glock 9mm costed that much.

    • @keithlarsen7557
      @keithlarsen7557 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Also a bolty would cost more because it needs the tolerences to lock up. A semi-auto 22 is just using the weight of the bolt to keep it shut. Kind of like how Sten guns were cheaper than Lee-Enfields.

Man, its amazing what a $100.00 dollars will buy now-a-day's. I bought my Ruger 10-22 in 1964 from a place called Gambles department store chain, for Only $39.95 and I question IF I should spend that much for it. he-he. I am sure glad now that I did now. Its got all the metal parts on it Not like the newer ones with the plastic parts.
