Tempteratur was measured at the bottom, the source of the heat inside the container. The copper part on the other hand was at the top of the container, the furthest from the source.

Sorry to tell you but the standard thermo was a 92°, the 88 was fitted to vehicles going to colder climates from 1970 /1984, the extra 4 makes a big difference

No problem. The car was actually still overheating and I found it to be a blockage in the radiator. Upgraded that and ran the car for a year in very hot weather with the colder thermostat and it was fine. I never took it out in cold weather to see the difference

it looks like your thermostat was upside down. the spring side should be pointing into the block

YES you can see at 2.26 that it's in backwards. The "wax" end should be on the hot side, engine side, as that what makes the thing work ! The other way in would need the radiator water to get to 88"c before the valve opens.

This is so weird, i bought a transit with the same engine as this some years ago. Bought it at the "specialist" here in the netherlands. I drove it for a summer, no real problems i only noticed when it rained the temperature suddenly droped. And then in winter it ran verry cold. Sooooo that should probably be a stuck open thermostat. I went to check it and indeed. It was stuck open. But also it was mounted the wrong way round! Even for a van that was maintained at the specialist! I reckon they are mounted wrong way round because it actualy fits. I am a mechanic and i never seen a other engine where it was possible to mount it the wrong way round.

Thanks for the advice. It would make it look nice but the one I have works and an unnecessary expense.

Any holes or vents in your bonnet?

    • @alfatechniks887

No but there’s no floor under the engine so plenty of air to escape and flow out
