- The PlayStation 2 is the best selling game console in history and was Sony's second system on the market following up their successful first attempt with the PlayStation. Most of us have had a PS2 at some point in time with over 155 million consoles selling. Today I wanted to unbox a PS2 system and open it up to see how it works.

The year was 2001, I was in third grade. I was sitting in class when the fundraisers were announced and as a child, everyone was interested in the prizes and there it was. PS2 for the grand prize. Long story short, my dad, mom and the rest of my family aunts and uncles went out of their way to help me sell and guess what, the night before the fundraiser was due, I was short by a few items. So my dad buys a whole bunch of the cheapest item which was a chocolate bar which cost like 7 bucks each so I can get the ps2. I was the only one in the school who had sold over 1000 dollars to get the ps2. Man it’s crazy now that I’m 26 I look back and realize how my family mostly my dad went out of his way to do that for me.

"unboxing" is relative here. I mean the console is already used and the parts are not well put back in the Box for a "how it was boxed" demonstration.

@@NoneYa42069 actually not exactly true. I still have an NES (Four Player Set) and N64 New in Box. But yeah... i would not open them to reduce the value. I just see this kind of "unboxing" a bit "away" from the term unboxing. If i took one of my boxed but used consoles with a semi good condition, everyone would be able to do unboxing of a million sold console/handheld. No matter if it was well put back in the box, after using it.
I remember the day my dad got us our Playstation 2. It was 2004. I was 11 years old and my younger brother was 9. We went together to my friend's house, and me and my friend started playing Enter the Matrix and left my brother out. We didn't even realise that and I wasn't paying attention. I felt so bad and apologized to him later. He told the story to my dad. The next day, my dad is coming home from work with a package. He tells us it's a fax machine. We take it to the house and open it, and there it was: a brand new PS2, an extra controller and 5 games. We were so excited we couldn't sleep that night. I still remember the day like it was yesterday. Thank you Dad!

same. i only have a switch, nes (MINI), and 2ds xl. but hey, the nes was in 1985 and 3ds was in 2011! i plan on saving my money for a phat ps2 and super slim ps3 just for nostalgia! i played a ps3 but it broke. and i was too young at the time when my dad had the ps2. maybe he has it, but hes in another state currently. i was also scared of the ps2 when i was 3. but now i realize its just a console not hell. i never played my dads ps2 so yeah. i just miss the sounds it made
Who else remembers the red screen and the creepy music playing when there was either something wrong with the disc or something wrong with the ps2 itself

@Gingex I wouldn't consider yourself lucky, I'd imagine you just know how to look after a disc and not scratch tf out of it. (I've still got my PS2 and it runs perfect as well as all my games.)

Most people of my generation grew up at the age of 7 with Xbox one or PS4, I had classics like need for speed most wanted, crash wrath of cortex, I was lucky enough to have these over rocket league and minecraft. ps2 for life

PS2 is interesting not only because it was a phenomenon within the market, but because it was both visionary and anachronistic at the same time! I mean, a DVD drive and almost vertex shader like vector units combined with a mid 90's style rasterizer ... that was on steroids.
God, the current console market is boring in comparison ...
If we had more of a focus on LAN play and maybe controller ports, I think we could have that magic back.
@@Matanumi That's one reason why we got the Steam Deck now. Console gaming this decade will become more and more irrelevant as PC gaming dominates. It has me wondering if we'll see the death of the home console in the future and everything will just be on the PC or Steam Deck? The only console of this generation that is interesting is the Switch. It's been very successful because of how innovative it's been. Yes, it has underpowered hardware, but the fact it can transform, be taken anywhere and hooked up to a TV or played on the go is the big reason for its success.
This was such a freaking blast from the past. The PS Underground demo disc form sent me ALLLLLL the way back!

I remember Playstation Underground lol. I was a member and they sent me a certificate and a cool card for my wallet! I remember getting demos in the mail all the time
I still wish I had a PS2, even three generations later.
Is not that hard to get one. It sold many millions so you can easily find one to buy for cheap.
I have 4 of them unopened in a box completely new and the one i am currently using was new as well and opened it just a year ago.

If you do get one, the large are better than the slim. When I had the slim it always seemed to scratch my discs

Dude I found a fat ps2 for 8 bucks at a thrift store. Had an old memory card and controller laying around. Got free mcboot and a hard drive and got to play the whole ps2 library for 8 bucks!
Best Christmas present ever. I was obsessed with the PS2 before it came out and it had been out for a while before I got one. I wasn't expecting it. I got down to the last present and I said "Nah, the box it too small." It was the PS2. I lost my mind. I had Resi CVX and Silent Hill 2.

Do any cool ones stand out to you? Mine was when i was visiting England the house i was staying at had a ps2 with GTA 3 and FFX. I beat ff X and it was an amazing experience. EDIT: I was about 12 years old, it was awesome :)
I remember when i was like 7 or something and i played a game called "Stock Car Crash". And i also played Guitar Hero II and III very often.
Summer 2019 I got Tony Hawk's American Wasteland and I think that it is really fun.

I remember my dad randomly taking me to a Toys R Us and there it was...the PS2. Took one home and never looked back.
PS2...Graphics Syntheziser is like a Voodoo 2. It can only do pixel processing. All the 3d things are done by the CPU. To make the CPU more powerful Sony made a seperate CPU core to do 3d. It had its own thread using a different Isa. Also complete sperate ram space. Imagine if if during the Pentium 2 Intel added MMX instructions into a seperate core in the CPU, the core works asynchronously with the regular x86 core and can only access 16kb of scratchpad ram.. you also have to write code only in assembly language for the MMX core. PS2 was always a nightmare to program and Sony made this on purpose to make it hard for developers to port PS2 games to other consoles and PC. Worked for the PS2 but it completely backfired for the PS3
@sampo i I thought about this for some time and my conclusion is that the CELL was a huge failure for Sony. The entire architecture proved to be superior to the tricore/six thread cpu on the 360 but to get there cost too much money. Only a few developers really pushed the PS3 to the limit (naughtydog, insomniac, santa monica and guerrilla come to mind) and they all come from Sony. All third party publishers made the games on the 360 and then ported them to the PS3. Programming/game development skyrocketed when the HD era arrived so the complexity of the PS3 proved to be one of its greatest weaknesses. One of the main reasons Sony accepted the massive losses on the PS3 during its release was because the true plan for the CELL was to use it in tv, computers, servers, workstation and supercomputers. Almost all of these never happened and the ones that did never really made Sony/Toshiba any real money. Today all modern CPUs follow the multiple core and dual thread approach instead of the architecture of the PS3 with main core(ppe) and multiple small cores (spe). A real shame since games like Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Resistance and God of War 3 would never be able to run on the 360.

Damn I remember working a toys r us when the ps2 came out. Those blue boxes traumatized me man lol.
I used to work at Sony repair center on PS2. "Disc read error" was 90% of the time optic replacement. Super easy to replace. People would use discs that had brushes on them to clean optic. That would scratch the lens and stop working. I love this video.
At the repair center we would get PS2 in a giant zip lock bag. The worst repairs came from Rent a Center. You would have to pick up the bag and shake it. If roaches fell out, we would ship it back.
The first generation PS2 would not have a mesh on the fan. So bugs would crawl in while the PS2 was off.

@@suprastevio2264 the worst was before I learned to shake the bag. Live family of roaches. As soon as I set it up on the bench they must have decided it was time to get out. I feel bag for our shipping department. Because they were the ones that had to take the system out of the box and put them in the bags.
Yeah the disc with the brush on it was from the ps1 era it use to work sometimes never tried it on a ps2 though

@@relate97 the metal gear solid games, spiderman ps2, god of war, san andreas, vice city, okami, resident evil 4, shadow of the colossus, any of the final fantasy games, kingdom hearts, jack and daxter, rayman, ratchet and clank. PS2 has so many amazing games although almost all have better versions on modern consoles/pc (though i still find it interesting to see the originals)
What king said but lately I've been playing futurama alot but it was expensive. And dynasty warrior games cause I use to love them back in the day.

Watching this while playing my PS2 lol 😆 since lockdown I dug it out and also bought lord of the rings two towers and return of the king on eBay for £4.50 bargain! Only slight problem is the disk drive it struggles to pop open and back in, kind of have to force it at times! Any ideas?
Put in hdd with a network adapter, you can play all games on hdd, even with a ps3 or 4 controller with bleutooth, and give it a good clean en some fresh greese on the laser assembly, and clean the laser
the ps2 is the goldilock zone of gaming, ps2 games cost 150k-2mil to develop, cheap enough so you can take a risk but expensive enough so you dont have mobile/flash games

still have mine but the disk drive started auto-closing long ago and i never wanted it to snap a disk I was putting in so I haven't played it in forever.
@@furydeath Probably needs a new disc tray mechanism. My Xbox 360 had the same exact problem, and I had dropped it twice.

GameCube, PS2, and SNES are my favorite consoles. The Switch is swiftly climbing it's way up there as well. (I like the PS1 as well, but since the PS2 can play all PS1 games, there's no reason to include it)
But PS2 and 1 have completely different libraries. Sure you can play ps1 games on ps2 but that doesn't matter when discussing your personal love for the platform and its exclusive material. Sry to nitpick lol.
More of this type of content would be great. I’ve not seen anyone unbox then open the console up and give so much detail as you do. Must say that was enjoyable 🙂
I know its super left field, but I'd love to see a Gameboy micro torn down. Its not a really popular console, but it did come out before the SP, and had the back light. And I know, the pocket had a light version in Japan, but that doesn't count, because I'm pushing my own narrative here.

The micro wasn't released before the SP. It was released alongside the (also backlit) AGS-101 models of the SP

I had a hand-me-down PS1 as a kid but I was too young to really “get” it, so PS2 holds the title of my first game console at heart. I consider it sort of equal to the SNES in a way, like, the SNES perfected 2D games and the PS2 perfected 3D games.

PS2 was handed down to me by my uncle after his college years. Still works, still play it very often, have only cleaned it once but I never knew what the box looked like. I really like this video and would love more like it. Maybe the Wii as that is incredibly nostalgic to me as well

That was a great time. I remember picking it up for my bday in March after it was released. It was so hard to find. I had to spend like 600 bucks as the place I bought it would only sell you it bundled. So I had to buy the system, 2 games, memory card and a 2nd controller. I picked up SSX and Zone of Enders as my first games. Great Games!
I remember around 2002ish, I lived with my aunt who didn’t spoil me or my bro (but lived an upper middle class life). But one day out of the blue my mom who wasn’t fit to watch us and was a drug runner at the time came and took me and my bro out to pizza and then went on a shopping spree at wal mart and target, I remember looking at the ps2 threw the locked glass case and she just said you want one and I was like yeah and said well get it and we called the guy over and my mom bought it for me with 4 games and an extra controller and game shark cheat code disc thing and two memory cards, omg that was the best day of my life, and to top it off, my aunts bf’s bro who was a total asshole to me had the nerve to ask eh can I play your dragon ball z game and I replied kinda snooty like sure remember give it back though! Thanks mom 👍

I remember getting my ps2 back in the day when they they used to sell it with either true crime or Simpsons hit and run. Those were simpler times, I only got one by convincing my mum it was also a DVD player and we could use it for that in the house.

That expansion port was most used for a network adaptor for games like Socom US Navy Seals online. there was even an official Logitech headset. The official Sony remote for use with the DVD player functionality was really nice as well I remember playing gta vice city with it haha
Playing SOCOM and transferring the data from Combined Assault 2 on the PSP was hella cool

I remember the PlayStation 2 was sold out everywhere at launch and some people were selling them for around a $1000. Luckily though I managed to pick up a week old system that was advertised in the local news paper. I no longer have that PS2, I sold it regrettably.
I now own a PS2 slim SCPH-90004 and still use it 👍

Ahh I remember the feeling when i opened mine, still gets use to this day. Best unboxing feeling December 91 SNES, day one release N64 was also a cool one. Hoping the PS5 will be my next day one release console i purchase. Been too long since the N64 days.

I had a friend who would do that along with his weed stash, but of course he had an old TV stand with wood doors that hid everything when not in use, and locked with a key, so a burglar would have had to work to get too it, and most would not have taken the time, and went for easier stuff.

I also bought a factory sealed, brand new PS2 slim in 2021, about 10 months ago. Unboxing it was amazing. It is the latest model they made, the 9000X series. I literally play my PS2 more than anything else. I have a gaming PC and an Xbox One S, and I play the PS2 more than both if them combined.
The ps2 still the best console ever. In my opinion the best gaming library. The multiplayer still works due to being couch play. Also stuff is still cheap to pick up.
It's a nice system to collect for on the cheap I'll agree, but if you want an OG model it can be a gamble if the laser still works, or fan no longer working, not to mention very early units scratching disc, and I need to repair my OG fat model, or get a new one because of the laser, but again it's been fun to collect for.
I agree, overall it's the best. The variety is pretty much unrivaled. The 6th gen in general was the greatest generation too imo.
PS1 is better.

@@retrosoul8770 Most multiplats that gen if not all were superior often by far on the competitors consoles, the PS1 era was more experimental with games so had such a bi polar experience, some people would of loved game A but hated Game B and others would have the opposite experience that experience sadly wasn't there with the PS2. Many of my fave games ever are on PS2 but at same time have better versions on other consoles or PC, the great PS1 games were the exclusives that never came out on other consoles or PC, or if they did the PS1 was the best version.
Have to say, the USB port on the fat PS2 works amazing well for powering an Astro A50 base and charging the headset. Never used the USB ports for anything else.

These videos always feel a bit of to me. They start as unboxing and end up with the console in pieces. I know it’s all for our entertainment, but it still makes me a bit uneasy...
I never had a PS2 until 2005 where we got the slim model, but when I was young and saw the original model PS2, I always thought that was some sort of deluxe model, and I hope I wasn't the only person who thought that.
But looking at it now, I'd actually love to get an original model PS2 for a more classic PS2 experience.
Especially since the slim PS2 I have recently tends to have issues reading discs.
Back in 2005, when I finally got the money to buy a PS2, I had three options to choose from: a Fat PS2, a slim PS2 and an original backs compat Fat PS3. I always considered the slim model very fragile compared to the Fat model and by that point in time, I already heard of overheating issues in the Fat PS3 model. In contrast, Sony built the Fat PS2 model like tank, I always liked its aesthetics and I always wanted one anyways. So I bought one used because by that time it was already discontinued. 15 years later, the lens is no longer useful, so I'm using it with a network adapter+IDE Hard Drive and OPL. Other than the lens, my PS2 is used almost on a daily basis. I love it and most likely, I'll never get rid of it.
@@krazycharlie Nowhere near built as a tank it was so fragile, I had 7 or 8 of them over a few years, most which were refurbs from Sony direct on warranty and some DOA I had one brand new that lasted a few weeks and I dared to put it in a strong bag, walk across road and open bag to find pieces of the dvd drive had fallen out! Yet I have 1980s consoles still intact and working, as does my Gamecube and Xbox from that Era and my launch 360!
I have a fat one that was the one i originally bought back in 2001. It stopped reading disks but since the rest of the hardware still works i found a way to use it by using it with Macboot to play roms of PS2 games on original hardware.
So yeah my old fat PS2 still rocking it with me and playing games.

I bought a PS2 fat and played games with it for 7-8 years before the lazer eye gave up. The other hardware still works fine and i use it to play games threw the hard drive.
Man the PS2 was the best! Me and my friends played Madden 2003 on it all the time! Devil May Cry 1 and 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, NBA Street, Def Jam Fight For New York. Tekken 3 such good memories! R.I.P to my best friend I miss those days!
I remember I was about 14 when I got one, so around 2001, and I walked down the street to a local game store with the money my mom gave me to get it. I had seen the commercials for FFX and thought it was the most amazing looking thing and I had no idea what final fantasy even was. I had my PS2 for probably 10 years and ended up throwing it away. Lots of good memories.

I remember that everything in the system looked futuristic to me. Even to this day the weird/dark tone of the UI feels hi tech. Great machine.
PS2 was awesome back in the day! I was the first out of all my friends n family to get one when i was like 19 years old and believe me my bedroom had at least 10 people in it every day all queing up for a go of it lol. The most impressive thing about it for me was grand theft auto becoming three dimensional game playing instead of the birds eye view you got with gta on the ps1 - it was a massive leap and i could never put the controller down oncest i picked it up , what a game for the time! I also got a 32" old style tv the same week to replace my 19" portable tv so that was also a huge leap on its own lol. I had no idea the ps2 played the new DVD format also and the guy in the store gave me a copy of a new shark movie with samuel l. jackson in it [ i cant remember its title lol ] but i dismissed it for the first few weeks til one night i was tidying up and found it under my bed and said oh to hell with it i`ll watch this new DVD movie tonight on my ps2 - i was completely blown away by the quality of DVDs given i was watching vhs up til this point and i amassed a huge DVD collection in the coming years!
To think that was nearly 20 years ago is crazy. Time sure goes by fast huh? Now that we have the PS5 launch upon us this year i have £3,000 put away for a new 82" TV , a new home surround sound system and of course the new PS5 with a few games and accessories so who knows yous might see me back on in here in 10 - 20 years talking about how epic the ps5 was when i first got it lol .......
The Playstation gaming consoles sure have given me some fantastic memories in my life, mainly just happy times playing them with my friends n family and just being at peace in general and hopefully will give me many more in the coming years !!

Member when games came with Manuals that had some cool info, like in Halo they had info on all the guns or enemy types and I think Ratchet and Clank had the same too with their Manual. Always thought the symbol was broken

Man I remember like always I never buy a system when it first came out and several months later when I figured the hype died down I went looking to buy one and couldn't find anywhere. And then one day I was told to check out Kmart because they sell electronics and sure enough it looked like many people overlooked Kmart because they had quite a few left. Very happy when I bought that unit. Favorite game system next to the snes.

When I was very young, I had a silver playstation 2 and one day my sister threw it down the stairs, I can't remember why she did but she did 😂 and I remember picking it up almost in tears and just hearing bits was loose inside anyway plugged her in, boom worked had it for years after aswell 😂
