It would be nice if they showed the slides everyone else is seeing so we could get a better idea or reference of what he is talking about.
I left school being a terrible speeker. My speech teacher just flunked me two years in a row but he did absolutely nothing to help me with the problem. I didn't even know I had a problem until after I got out of high school I started recording myself and listening to my recordings. I've been trying to teach myself to be better in my whole life. I'm 54 now and have found some good ways to improve myself on my own. I'm a hundred times better than I was when I left school but I'm still improving more yet

If you can find a Toastmasters Club within reach of where you live, here you will find a collection of like minded people who have all been on the journey to better speaking and love supporting each other in learning to speak better. AND there are online clubs and clubs which organize hybrid meetings. As a guest, you can join free of charge. To be included in the structured learning program you need to become a member and this is extremely affordable - all over the world 😀By the way: I get no money for promoting TM, I just love the organization (in spite of its several faults) and am always happy to spread the news.

Dont indulge into negative gossip.
Dont judge/condemn/blame
Dont complain about things we cant do something.
Dont give excuses, accept and improve.

People overthinking this talk way too much. Sometimes maybe we need to just listen instead of looking for errors. My God.
I would wish that the sound in post had been done better, considering the talk.
Otherwise a very good and insightful talk and really solidified some of the concept that I didn’t realise I had floating around my head, especially the ‘listening’ that you are speaking too, it had never occurred to me to categorise it and that is a powerful tool to be able to think about it and talk about it.
He sounds really eloquent when he speaks. This video is truly eye-opening.

Do you have any specific suggestions for someone who’s natural inflection/voice sounds very bitchy? I’ve unintentionally started so many conflicts in my life because my voice sounds mean even when I’m happy and just trying to have a conversation. I speak pretty quietly, but something about my tone and pitch is off. I don’t know how to change it so just find myself staying silent or whispering in order to avoid sounding bad. Any recommendations, videos, books is very much appreciated. Thank you

That's a perfect example of someone confusing opinion with fact.
So the verbal content of this talk was ok (a few points I think are kind of half baked if you stop to analyze) and I can understand the choice not to include visuals to go along with some of what the presenter said. Unfortunately the combination of that choice is some what hypocritical as you soon realize that the visuals they omitted (his slide show) are actually the only way to UNDERSTAND WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT in several places! (Criticizes the world for not conveying it all in speech, then goes and throws up visual slides himself!)

But when all around you indulge in so called 7 sins of communication it s very difficult to put up with these kind of people if we don't involve. We will always feel negative about the person doing any of these. Also we might hate the person. It makes it more complicated. Also when we are not ourselves it's kind of stressing our brains.
I agree. It is evidently the price that must be paid, in my circles, as well as other circles, I am sure. That is, if one wishes to be understood and if one wishes to understand an other. I value both very highly and yet often receive neither despite my ability to be concisely detailed and present valid information and valid questions. I expect that this patient, opened, 'listening' of Julian's, will slow the pace however quality and accuracy will be achieved more often and result in less wasted time. Stay the high road, eye to eye and be positive. You will see the other's better sides by listening well and being listened to well. My advise and hope for myself and others.
Regarding "but," i've heard someone say that "nothing good comes after 'but'"
My husband says however instead of " but". It makes a huge difference

Yeah, communication would work better if we could actually see the slides he's presenting.
All you have to do is live up to being what he likes and then everyone will love you. While its mostly good advice, much of it is mere polemic like a cult leader tell everyone how to "be themselves" as long as its the way they tell you to be.
Sharing an informed opinion is not an instruction nor a demand.

Is there a way to see the slides he was using as part of his message? Doesn’t make any sense to watch this and listening to the pauses he allows to the audience to read his next slide, which he doesn’t explain for some reason.
This is a second time I see this speech delivered to a different audience. Yet again, as he brands ‘Gossiping’ and ‘Judging’ sins of public speaking, here, quite publicly he tells us about his ‘very negative’ mother-in-law, who is clearly not present, so here is a demonstration of gossiping and judging!

I'm aware that this a two year old comment on this video, but your point about his mother struck me as somewhat odd. If what he said about his mother was detached from this talk and represented elsewhere, then absolutely he would be judgemental and a bit of a gossip. But here, he found his mother to be a resonant example of negativity within the context of a presentation designed to inform people, and information is more effectively delivered through tangible examples. Hence why I don't really believe that he was being judgemental and negative, and he has a point, albeit added with a tinge of irony, "if October 1st is dreadful, what hope do the rest of us have?"
Quite aside, I'd argue that that's not really judgemental when an elderly woman in the final days in her life would have probably felt quite justified being negative in general.

Ah never mind... it is a TED talk so why on earth did I expect anything useful?
Here's basically the entire thing:
-- Don't Gossip // -- Don't judge // -- Don't be negative // -- Don't complain // -- Don't use excuses // -- Don't exaggerate // -- Don't put opinions as facts // -- Don't minimize (using "just" in front of something) // -- Replace "but" with "and" // -- Be honest // -- Be authentic // -- mean what you say // -- if you're talking to a group, don't fidget. (tons of other stuff that's just filler, like don't tilt your head forward, keep your throat relaxed, etc) // -- remove speech anomalies like vocal fry and putting "so" at the start of sentences.
Finally: If you see *ANYTHING* marked as a TED talk, it's a waste of time. "Giving people hugs makes them feel good" (everyone remember that one?) I think there's a reason TED Talk doesn't appear anywhere except in the description where you're likely to miss it.
Some valid points here but also some bits I'm not so sure about. When English people "moan" about the weather, they are not actually moaning about the weather. It is a form of greeting, a small but important moment of social lubrication that brings people together. Similarly, gossip, as long as it is not malicious, is a way for people to connect with each other and to process the behaviour of others in their community. Shouldn't our speaking respect cultural norms and traditions, within reason, or else we risk seeming a bit obtuse and deliberately awkward in our communications?

I hate the word stakeholder. Almost always comes out of the mouth of a jumped up bureaucrat. Why do people often answer a question with “yes” when it is unnecessary?
Pretty much a scam, he talks about a presentation on screen that is never shown. This is like watching a movie with the eyes closed. Video title is totally misleading.
Poor Julian. How ironic that this thoughtlessly recorded video actually places this clearly competent speaker, unknowingly I'm sure, at the center of a text-book example of poor communication - the very thing he speaks against. I stopped watching it after about 5 mins because of its signal failure to communicate in the way he intended. I'm not sure what the well meaning folk at 'Thinking Digital' were trying to achieve with this item, other than job-lot reputation damage, but maybe next time drop the Digital and just try plain old - thinking, before inflicting this on anyone. If you had done this to me or mine, I would have shared a nicely turned phrase with you, one we use in England at times like this: 'You put me in Burton's window with my arse on fire - thanks a bunch'. There's an old rule in presenting, it's not 'Digital' it's not even that clever - it's just very true. If you can't do it well - don't do it at all. Kind regards RJD

I think some good points however I really don’t think this was presented well considering the subject. I found his voice quite boring and drifted off so many time that I had to rewatch.
He needs to work on his charisma think as his voice is quite weak.
How can some one talk so long and say nothing. He defined gossip, that we don't think about context, and the revelations kept on coming. Waste of time. It was my time, don't let it be yrs.

That’s because it’s pronounced ‘tamber’. Pronouncing the word as ‘timbre’ refers to cut down trees.
