- When you look at it, how much has sim racing really progressed since this gem came out 16 years ago? GTR2 is still a ton of fun to play, and has many features, especially for offline racing that many modern sims sorely lack. Because its been around so long it can sometimes seem like a daunting task to get it running these days, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Although you absolutely can go install a lot of mods and great addons to improve nearly every aspect of the sim, stock GTR2 is still great and very easy to get running. Together with a couple of small patches, you may mistake yourself into thinking you're still racing on the bleeding edge...
If you are having trouble with GTR2 not starting, make sure to run the 'GTR2Config' !

Install the full program, but you only need to copy the contents of the 'CrewChief/plugins/GTR2' directory to your GTR2 install to benefit from the patch

I remember my older sister (12 years older than me) coming home from high school one day in early 2007 with a steering wheel and hastily hooking it up to her computer and downloading GTR2, I remember watching her race on it for countless hours and I did my share of driving on it too. There was a little too much going on in it for 5 year old me to comprehend but i loved it and loved watching her drive on it. It started my fascination with racing ( and the Le Mans movie which my sister also introduced me to… and don’t get me started on P&G love it so much). And I remember playing the NASCAR games with her but that was on controller this was different I was holding the steering wheel and pushing the pedals. I’ll never forget how cool it seemed to me back then. Fast forward like 15 years and I’m still playing that game occasionally. Still racing with my sister too. We try to get on AC and screw around for a few hours at least twice a month just hard when you don’t live in the same state anymore and have vastly different schedules. but nothing will beat the first time i played GTR2 ahhh the memories.

This game will never get old. I remember back in the day, when I used to post on internet gamming forums, that most of the gamers were fighting about Forza Motorsport vs Gran Turismo 4 being the "best simulator" and them GTR2 entered the ring. I strong believe that a lot of those fanatics really cried because of Simbin lol
I find it hilarious that this is by far the best game Slightly Mad Studios ever made...yet nobody remembers them for it. Also this game has no business having such a good soundtrack. Dr. Steven Baysted is an absolute legend for tracks like "Spa 24 Hours".

@@wiskythecat Slightly Mad, back when they were called Blimey! Games, worked on it together with SimBin. Blimey! reformed as Slightly Mad in 2008, presumably when they got the Need for Speed deal, but it was effectively the same company and people.

These cars are so much cooler then modern GT3 cars. This version of Spa is awesome compared to Spa today.
Disagree, modern gt cars look insane and modern gt3 is the peak of GT racing. You have more manufacturers and more variation in car design yet they still perform closely
This old version of Spa along with other older GT cars are also available in Automobilista 2. Also Spa 70 is coming by the end of the year.
@@andreic5822 I drive that version of Spa a lot. Mostly in the GT1 and Group C cars. It’s fantastic. So is the 91 version of Monza. Actually all the AMS2 historic tracks are the best tracks in sim racing I think. I love the giant old school billboards and overall feeling of danger. In VR it really takes you back in time.

I love modern GT3s but these old GT1 are much more visceral. They were sequential, naturally aspirated, big engines ranging from V8 to V12 .. I would love to see how a modern GT1 class would be nowadays
I don’t think anything will beat this sim. The cars, the noises, the tracks, the visuals. The ai was so believable and fun to battle and nothing has yet grabbed the excitement of driving screaming gt1 cars like gtr2 does. I will forever hail this as the best sim ever
It's because modern sims have become to sterile from a presentation standpoint. Sure the driving feel is better, the graphics are better, and they are probably more realistic, but basically every modern sim fails miserably at simulating the atmosphere of racing. The immersion of feeling like you're on an actual motorsport team, the AI actually working properly for endurance races, FCY and other actual racing rule sets. I could list off many more things modern sims fail at that GTR2 does better, but it seems nowadays almost all sim developers completely ignore these things and only focuses on updating tire models endlessly without ever acknowledging diminishing returns at a certain point.
@@DustySticks This! Just to give an example, the devs of ACC (currently most accurate GT3 sim) were once asked about safety car and other features that would give the game more immersion, but they rejected it, because they did not care about immersion, just the simulation of driving itself
@@theWebmasterify yeah that's the shit that pisses me off because they are "racing simulators" not "driving simulators." Or I guess in this case that's what Kunos sees it as. I honestly think its because they don't want to invest actual effort and time into those features. Their "career" mode is an absolute joke.
@@DustySticks I agree. The reason why the F1 games do so well isn't necessary just because they're more casual but also because they properly immerse you in F1. The safety cars, formation laps, car development, ui like the TV graphics, etc.
For me GTR2 is super bugged. AI ignore blue flags and even fight you by changing line under braking which can fuck your race. First 1-2 laps AI is extremely slow so you overtake 20 cars before turn 2. Ridiculous. Pitstops are completely broken, AI pits randomly, some of them will pit even on lap 1, others won't pit at all, others will pit several times. They probably refuel to 100% and change tires every time so player pitstops are way quicker than AI, bam you go from p10 to p1 and win the race coz you overtake 10 cars in pit. Tyre usage is broken, for player it's super slow and no grip while AI still drives with same pace. There is many many more. GTR2 is literally unplayable.
GTR2 was one of the sims that I played 24/7. I still have it on Steam if I wanted to reunite with it again. However finding the patch can be a pain in the @$$ these days. I remember going onto No Grip Racing for my mods, car skins and tracks. I remember it all..

This game is such a huge part of my childhood. I remember playing this all day and night long. I modded it and made mods for it. I loved how I could take cars and tracks from GTL,Rfactor into it and just have a blast. 🤧
I started sim racing back in 99..!! Raced NR2003 in leagues for years and at the time kept my eyes out for the next level road racing sim..!! GTR2 was the first real dive into road racing for me and I loved it..!!
The BTCC super touring mod for this is incredible

Brilliant, was going to start this video now and finish it later, but ended up just watching the whole thing without realizing because I was just too enthralled in the action.
Love the mini endurance videos like this, just the whole day/night/day transition, the multi-class battles, the strategy, but in a small enough package that it's not a chore to watch and keep up with what's happening.
Also the fact you can just keep live commentating in a way that's entertaining and genuinely informative for the entire race is commendable, I definitely couldn't manage it.

GTR2 is alongside of Race07 my daily (sim)driver. Mostly due to great Super Touring mod for GTR2, at the moment it covers 1990-2000 BTCC with some other series around the globe (most notably Super Tourenwagen Cup, STCC and JTTC) and apparently they're working on expanding the mod through the 00s and 10s.

I can say that this sim tought me how to drive in real life too. I was young so I wasnt able to win against strong AI but I learnt a lot. My first and favorite racing sim to this day.
This is one of my favorite sims of all time. It made me fall in love with road racing; before this I was only destined to race ovals, as that's what I knew from my youth. Spent hours racing at Watkins Glen in an Aston Martin. Good memories.
This was a great era, and the pre 2000 GT1 and GT2 era was even better. I've always been dissapointed by the lack of GT1 and GT2 on console games so i recently got myself a gaming pc and immediately downloaded Assetto Corsa and installed the early 2000 FIA GT cars.
I'm currently having a blast recreating the 2002 GT season with the Carsport Holland Viper :D
GTR2 looks impressive, that one's next on the list!
Thoroughly enjoyed Project Cars 2 on the console, so that'll be on my harddrive soon too!
Why not Automobilista 2 to? Same engine as pCars but it is much better, many bugs have been fixed - bugs that not even SMS knew how to fix, like the locking diff problem - and the game is developing really fast atm.

True! When I simraced between 2008-2020 i raced and customized GTR2 90% of the time! The game is amazing!
One of my all time favs. I remember using a mod that didnt allow AI lights to get broken bc i was so tired of driving around cars with no lights by 30mins into a race haha. Cool video! Thanks for the memories

Great video, I'm 18mins in at the first stop. Love that you kept it basiclly stock without overloading with mods, def made me want to jump in to this classic so many of us used during the simbin GTR1 + 2, Toca days etc with our Logitech Wingman forumla wheels, always a weird naming convention for using the flightsim name for the wheel line haha. But so many memories.
Closest ive gotten to it again in modern simming has been the RSS GT pack of this era in AC which gives off the same vibes as you blast around Saleens, Listers and Vipers etc.

I’ve worked on the problem of Race Performance falling short of Qualifying Performance resulting in uncompetitive races in the SHO Competition AI mod at Race Department.
The problem requires a custom tuning for each track but if you want close, hard racing it provides a much better experience. The mod provides all this to you already done.
There’s still a “fun” element to it, too, you’ll still be able to pass 5-10 AI but eventually you should run up against AI that are faster than you. That is, if you haven’t qualified too high to begin with.

What I loved about GTR2 was their free mods (racing car designs basically) their Pit Stop structure, pace car, a possible pit strategy. Pit stops were pretty in depth in that you controlled how much fuel you wanted, tires, and damage repair etc. I once spent 15 minutes in the pits real time. I also loved how they were true race cars in their respected classes racing each other, not fake ass cars in GT7 and other franchises from Forza, but they are arcade racers, yet they brag they are sim. I also enjoyed multi class between the GT1 field and the GT2 cars, always fun and there were really good groups or clean racers. The AI is also more intuitive than say..... Forza series, GT7 for sure. Races had weather and a very nice difficulty experience, and this was back in the early 2000's. My oh my how things have evolved, or not really?? GTR2 is still a great game.

Got the game at the year of it's release, like 1 month after discovering gran turismo 4 (driving force gt gang !), that leap was so huge felt that the game was so ahead of it's time so much at the point it became intimidating. Gt Legends and Race07 were more "tamable", glad it stood the test of time ! and its soundtrack, so majestic !
I still play this with the Furi Race Mod. 90s Touring Car heaven!
Well, 2003 was almost 20 years ago so I think this still counts as historic simracing... Hell I was 4 in 2003, I'm getting vintage.
There is no game like GTR2, just as there is no game like GPL.
There were two occasions when the racing simulator gods slept, Prometheus stole them and gave them to mankind.
This game was an absolute classic back in the day. I'm a big fan of Vipers and so this video hit the spot in so many ways. Everything about this game seemed so right.
I used to race this in an online club / league. I liked the Lister Storm in longer races where you had to pit and refuel, it wasn’t the fastest GT car but it was more fuel efficient than quickest cars, so it could make up some time with the quicker pit stops and race strategy.
Also, the trees still look better than iRacing, the graphics have held up overall pretty well.
You have no idea how awesome that sim is until you drive the S7 and hear the sim through a nice big set of speakers and amps. The wheel feedback on the G27 is pretty good but lots to be desired.

Nice video man! I still play GTR² too. For me the Viper is difficult to drive, much understeering. Nice to see the battle with the Ferrari. This race was the only race in the FIA-GT series where no car from the top GT cars won, but a Porsche 996 RS from the NGT class.
Still playing at the present Day. I really love this game and his content, we re talking about a 2004 or 2005 game but its awsome see this masterpiece still alive and getting more mods (like the present WEC or IMSA or Classics DTM or Addons for Power & Glory Mod). What a masterpiece from Simbin! 😍 💖.

Damn, haven´t seen GTR2 for more than a decade. It hurts to realize you´re getting old. Great memories with this game as i was playing this together with friends back when we was young and we hat a lot of fun racing each other during our weekly LAN parties. These where good times, still remember we all ordered the Logitech MOMO wheel one day and i start smiling when i remember how we discussed the enormous price for this toy and if it is realy worth it. And it was. Sure, no comparison to the Heusinkveld, Fanatec, Simucube gear etc. we use today, but back then it was a pile of money for us and it shaped our love for simracing still until today. Those were the days :D Thanks for uploading!

Regarding the track "changes", it's been done, so Motorbikes can return since they need more run-off and gravel traps.
Overall, the track is still the same from what I could see :).

One of most played racing games ever for me (reason to get it was to ride Murcielago). And it gives that massive racing feel even for person who never had a wheel/rig. Just plain keyboard (3H races are fine, longer needs to save)

Great video! I never really got to spend enough time to bond with the sim in GTR2 as my simming schedule was already full to the brim with league racing in RF when it came out, but I had adored GTR and GTL both. Neat to see that it is still appreciated.
Yes this game is awesome played this for hours back when I had a decent computer and a wheel that worked, favorite track was donington short configuration, I remember setting a lap of 1:03 in a Ferrari 550 GTS, I going to watch the rest of the video now. I am a fellow Massachusetts resident who loves Motorsport, thanks for playing this gem of a game
The big reason for the upgrades and changes to the track is for bike racing, There was small talk of Motogp but it was mainly for endurance bike racing.
Great point, though I think it's also worth noting how Eau Rouge had horror crashes last summer across open wheel *and* GT racing- it called the safety of that section into question and there was a lot of debate over how much could change while keeping it intact.
Luckily they focused overwhelmingly on the runoff and spectating area around it, with minimal change to the flow of the track itself.
I remember the first time i launched the GTR 1 demo on my PC. I remember pushing the gaz pedal on top of the raidillon. I had never felt so connected with the car before in any other game.
I really enjoyed VLN races in GTR2. The amount of mods and skins for this series are awesome. I hit over 1000 laps on EEC Nordschleife with different VLN races and even made a few skins for it myself.

Oh man, I love this sim - amazing out of the box, the anniversary patch + crew chief elevate it, and the cars are so iconic and fun to drive.
Got to shout-out Furi Motorsport's Super Touring pack too - such a magnificent addition to an already fantastic sim.
I remember years ago hearing about a group of people in Denmark running LAN competitions using the GTR2 platform and held 24 hour races on not only the Spa track, but the Circuit de la Sarthe as well.
In my teenage years, I spent many days racing GTR2 and GT Legends with Gamers-Crib and spent lots of time there and at NoGripRacing. Miss those days.

I have a GTR2 conversion for AMS and absolutely love it. Once in a while I find myself doing some mini races.
As an amateur racer in RL I have tried some of the new sims, but haven’t been impressed enough to feel the need to move on from GTR2. I care about historically accurate endurance racing with full grids, and I don’t see a current sim that’s as complete.

@@utkarshchaurasia2233 Well, I’ve seen videos from ACC (including GPLaps) of classic tracks that look visually great. But- what if I want to run say a historic race or championship with a full field of decent AI offline? I can do this In GTR2, but in ACC I haven’t seen anything that comes close.

Crazy to think that a 2006 game like GTR2 would attest through time even today, largely thanks to the modding communities which kept the game alive and interesting.

It's crazy how I remember playing this game on controller years and years ago, I remember the menus, the music, but none on the gameplay? I definitely didn't play it on a wheel as I was only drifting on LFS. Crazy how the mind choses to erase some memories but not others. Oh well. At least I remember driving the Viper in Le Mans 24 Hours on Dreamcast. We definitely need a new game with this era of cars.

Had GTR 1 for a long time and was my favorite Sim did some 24 hour races with my brother :)

I used to select the cars I drove by the sound they made. Ended using almost only the Viper and the Lister Storm. Sometimes the Murcielago.
I killed my first FFB steering wheel with that game.
I discovered this game about a year ago, love it. Play as much as work and family will allow, I would love to be able to play online with my stock install. Going to try crew chief as soon as I can.
It was my second Sim. The first was Richard Burns Rally. Still got the installation file here and the original GTR2 CD. Such a good Sim. After that I got GT Legends, Race07 + Expansions, GTR Evolution (kickstarter for all my friends Sim racing carreers, now we all own Sim rigs and drive at least twice a week except for hot summer), Life for speed, Assetto Corsa, Iracing too many to summ them all up.
I have this game on cd which I purchased years ago. I also have assetto corsa and dirt rally 2.0. Out of the box, this game supports my logitech momo wheel a lot better than the newer games. The driving feels more natural with minimal tweaking. Dirt rally i have been playing with a ps3 controller and assetto corsa I have yet to figure out how to tweak my controls so that i can actually drive without constantly swerving and losing control of car. GTR2 works great on my windows 10 pc with the 1.1.0.0 patch and running in winxp compatibility mode.
Fantastic trip down memory lane! Also, would love to see a vid about VLN. Still have fond memories of NLC's VLN 2005 Mod. Those were some good times.

still playing this right now, trying to recreate some vintage LeMans, the amount of content, while not surpassing Assetto Corsa in terms of quantity, it's still amazing and the grid sizes you can have are overwhelmingly good.
I actually started with the first GTR mod for F1 2002. Cracked version from a school buddy of mine. Racing with a MS Sidewinder non-FF wheel. Played GPLegends and later GT Legends as well. Best of times.

As someone who loves endurance racing and stupid big grids GTR2 speaks to me kinda like raceroom does but more specific. The graphics are at a not horrible level and they don’t get in the rid of a crap ton of cars, full time progression, and a good frame rate. Can’t wait til I can get a PC with literally any ability to do gaming on so I can finally try it out.
I love the mid 60's gpl version of spa, fun stuff. Fun to drive in GRTR2.

Oh man, such good memories! I drove this sim so often with my MOMO Logitech Force Feedback; the wheel that just kept going, nearly indestructible. Now on a Fanatec, though. How did you setup your wheel and base (with FanaLab and in-game) so you get proper feel from the force feedback? Tried GTR2 again last week with my wheel, which was pretty underwhelming because of how the wheel and pedals felt.

Have you tried the SHO Competition FFB mod at Race Department?
It crowdsources ffb params for each wheel. One of them might work for you.

Regarding the Proton Porsche 993 (the older Porsche). It only did the first 3 rounds of 2003. Proton replaced it for a 996 for rounds 4 and onward. GTR2 has it set up so you won't get it at Spa for 24 hour races or Championships. It'll still appear for 'race weekends' though. Regarding mods feeling different; tires and physics. The files are easy to edit and you can use whichever tires you want. So for example, if you put GT tires on the NGT ferraris, they go so far with their fuel, they'll challenge the GTs around tighter circuits.
Amazing how good the engines sound, given how old this game is.

gtr2 is crazy good even nowadays, obviously not comparable to ACC or iRacing in terms of graphics, but i still have a great time on it, lots of mods lots of tracks, just amazing
man i wish nowadays more games had these 90's early 00' gt1 to gt3 cars. i just wanna race around in a proper GT1 S7 and not just the street version they have in most games :I
You were right, that was the C5.R Corvette. There wasn't a C3.R but the equivalent would be the C3 L88!

Haven't had a chance to play GTR2 in a minute, though I like the driving-school stuff. It helps me even with GPL, my go-to sim.

LOOKS AMAZIN for a 20 year old game beside still love it and play time to time even today modenr games fall short to this game the car fell heavy under braking and can fell the body roll in the corners specialy the viper feels heavy and clunky amazing game
