  • Power & Glory is one of the most impressive accomplishments in Sim Racing modding. Calling it simply a 'mod' may be under-selling PnG, it might as well be considered a full game. Aiming to recreate true Touring and Sportscar racing from the 1960s and 70s, the mod totally transforms GTR2 into a classic racing sim packed-full of historical goodness. Going on 10 years since the final V3 version was release, Power and Glory is still going strong with new cars and tracks being produced to this day. And despite its age it still holds up as one of the best classic sports/touring car sim that exists today.
    All you need is copy of GTR2 (Selling for $7.99 on Steam)

    Thank you so much for this video. P&G has been a big chapter of my simracing and real life back then. I had the true honour to lead the modding team through P&G1,2 and 3.0 before leaving and going professional. The true passion, incredible work ethic and outright insane attention to detail, was driving every single member of our GTLW mod team. Everyone was pushing each other way over the limit and into burnout and desperation... but we did it and I truly believe we influenced in various ways the mod scene back then.
    Starting from asking specifically the SIMBIN guys if we could use their platforms to do so, creating a dedicated installer asking for proof of GTL CDrom disc with updating servers included. Actual musicians performing cover instrumental recreations of famous 60s and 70s songs for our UI. Cover art by an actual artist (the Alfa GTAm), completely recreated from scratch total UI mod with even new features and so on and so forth...
    But the most important part was undoubtedly the massive, epic, work done in historical research and recreation of the cars. While you can certainly appreciate instantly the attention to detail, sounds and maybe driving, I don't really think people can understand how much work went into recreating those cars. The same car various skins are not just "skins". The research for the many non existent sponsors and their accurate true to the era logo's for the skins was extensive and thorough. Lot's of money were spend on "vintage markets" buying old books and magazines from the era... On top of that, each skin has its own dedicated physics, graphics and sounds when needed. If you see a Mustang missing a left or right or both of side mirrors, the car physics will have a slightly different frontal area which affects drag. If you see a 60s Alfa Romeo having different rear body wheelarches, the tyres and suspension is different. Various different cockpits changed or made from scratch, down to the original true engine key on some of them (check the 2.8 Capri's). The GT40 skins are the true evolutions of each chassis etc. If the skin text says the car had a slightly different suspension, this is recreated. If the engine is slightly different, this is recreated.
    The history of Shelby Cobra Daytona is one the greatest examples. In the history of some of the skins, you'll find that the first prototype designs were send to an Italian body shop to make the body. The Italians saw the straight cut roof of the designs (made by "forgot his name" actual aerospace designer back in the day) and "thought" it was wrong and made a smooth roof. The car had worse aerodynamic drag than the design but the body was made and raced like that. A different chassis number had the proper roof and was 3-4kmh faster on the Lemans. If you check the various "skins" you'll see the 3D model difference and if you take the cars at LeMans you'll notice the slightly different top speed.
    The list goes on and on and on. Those are not 70-ish cars with 200-ish skins... those are 200 different cars.
    Most of those info's are also in the big PDF manuals as well.
    I have nothing but praise for all the people involved in one way or another in the making of this mod. It also puts into perspective how much more limited are professional dev teams by the modern era of licensing, deadlines and lawyers and contracts. This kind of simulated encyclopaedia is simply not possible to recreate under license of a commercial product. I see at the tabacco and booze sponsors on some of this cars and... laugh.
    Thanks again for bringing this into the attention of today's simracers.

    The reason why Simbin went with the "modern historic" route for GTL was actually pretty known - it was licensing. Instead of trying to hunt down a bunch of manufacturers - some of which don't exist anymore - and beg/pay them for licenses that they may or may not get, it was much easier to go to one series and get one license that covered a bunch of cars. That route also allowed them to have Porsches in the game, which otherwise would have been blocked by Porsche's exclusive EA deal at the time, and it's tough to have a historic GT sim without Porsches!

    • @martinoberg4883

    Just wanted to let all the P&G fans know that Crew Chief GTR2 Enhancements Plugin now supports H-Shifted gearbox with per-gear damage. To me, that's a big step forward in simulating older cars. So now, people who were missing more realistic shifting and working rain wipers can enjoy even better experience in P&G.

    I will be honest and say it feels great that the work and passion we put in to the mod still makes people happy and satisfied to run it in this new age of games. Particularly when P&G v3.0 almost did not happen at all as the team was down to just 3 active members for the last 6

    Power and Glory used to be a nightly ritual with my dad and I, trying to beat each other's lap times, or see how many positions we. Would gain in a race starting from last. Not the first sim I had, but it's the one that truly got me hooked.
    One track I remember for P&G was the Older layout for the Edmonton Indy. My dad's first ever race in real life was on that Airport track, it was a vintage support race for Cascar in the late 1990's before indycar raced on that layout. Our vintage racing club (Calgary Vintage Racing Club) raced in Vintage grids at the Edmonton Indy right up until 2012 on the newer layout. I started racing in 2010, and raced on that track in 2012, although it was a couple weekends after the Edmonton Indy, so not quite as exciting as the support races my dad got to do before.

    The problem with ‘modern’ historical vehicles, running at Festivals and Revival races, aren’t really the tires but the roll cages, which add rigidity to the chassis and dramatically change the behaviour of the cars. That is why many drivers complained about it with the FIA and refused the new mandatory rule to use 5 points roll cages as they would completely alter the nature of the vehicles.

    • @kukko83
      @kukko83 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true. When you look at old photos, and video footage of racing in period, you can see how much the chassis' flexed on most cars. There are many photos, of Escorts and Capris especially, where they have their inside front tire half a meter in the air, while the rest of the tires are firmly planted. The bodies were so twisted, I wonder how the glass kept from popping out!😄

    As much as I love Bazza's mods for Assetto Corsa, SimBin games and Power & Glory, I still think that some developer should create historic touring cars game. There are lot of games featuring DRM, Group 5, 4 or higher division Group 2 cars but there are no division 1 and 2 group 2 cars. There are few published works from Brickyard Legends team, there is Skoda 130RS mod for AC and there is Scirocco in Raceroom. I really want to see sim that takes historic racing seriously and features fully fledged class instead of adding few popular cars added as an afterthought. I am sure that there is market for vintage racing. Just imagine that car list for lower classes:
    Div1: Alfa Romeo GTA J, Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint, Audi 50, VW Polo, Simca Rallye 2, Simca Rallye 3, Ford Escort 1.3, Skoda 130RS, Fiat 128, Mini Cooper S 1.3, Mini Cooper 1275GT

    I logged SO MANY HOURS in this mod, being a big fan of GTL back in the day as well, and a lot of that time was doing exactly what you were talking about- reading the history of the cars, especially how some of the cars in the same model were slightly different- some had different engines, additional front spoilers, etc.. and all of that made a difference in how the car felt. I know that licensing would be a nightmare if a company tried to release a commercial product with these cars in them, but I'd love to see this kind of mod continue on other platforms and even in rally racing, as the historic options are limited with DR2.0 and such.

I never raced GTR2 and this mod but did in Rfactor with HistorX and old school trakcs(Kyalami,Bathurst with no chase,Oesterreichring,Buenos Aires etc...) and the racing, especially with other capable drivers still ranks as some of my favorite sim racing ever.....hands down.

    I grew up in this era. Mid-Ohio was 25 miles away, so I saw the 70s Can-Am, Trans-Am & IMSA there & generally hung out at the track. My brother raced a Carrera Speedster, an RS61, several Bobsy/Porsche 2L sports-racers, then finally a Lola T294. For a summer, I worked for Hurtig Team Libre, the first to bring the BMW CSLs to race in the States. It was better than you can imagine...

    Hi GP Laps,
    I have recently found your channel and I'm a big fan, I got into simracing for the first time during Covid last year and its great to see someone using simracing the same way I do.
    In this video you mention that classic cars being used for historic racing may have slightly detuned engines. I've worked on the classic racing scene here in the UK and I thought you'd be interested to know that in fact the opposite is true;- officially the rules don't allow us to modify or replace parts (except for safety), however as its "non-competitive" there's no scrutineering for engine internals. Over years, especially as stakes have become higher due to the potential to added value to car winning a prestigious event, this has lead to most competitive cars running all-new internals (i.e. not made of 1950s cheese metal), skimmed and ported or sometimes new "replica" heads, new sleeves or in extreme cases new blocks.
    The result is most cars in modern historic racing are significantly more powerful than they were in-period, for instance I've worked on a 310hp "original" C-type, technically with a original matching numbers engine, which I don't have to tell you would've easily wiped the floor at Le Mans in 52. These gains are offset by modern tire compounds to keep things drivable, although certain models still have a reputation for being more dangerous to race today than they were in the 60s.
    Hope this was interesting and keep up the great videos!

    • @GPLaps
      @GPLaps  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing! I assumed incorrectly that the cars would be detuned. But I am always impressed how hard the cars are driven at events like Goodwood

    • @Daniel-eu9xw
      @Daniel-eu9xw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GPLaps Your welocme! I hope some day you get to see Goodwood, the cars are always special but the dress code and all make it feel more like time travel than historic racing, sets it apart from the rest. And with how hard they drive, don't forget that just because a car costs x million quid doesn't mean its that expensive to crash! Most the value comes from the serial so it's impossible to write-off, the financial risk is lower than the composite cars which replaced them.

    You're right about the start was on the straight before the corner you called the Grand Prix curve, but the pits has always been at the Carousel corner. As far as chicanes are concern I beleive there was a chicane replacing the Norra (North) corner between '74 and '78 (at least). The corner leading on to Flygrakan (Flight straight) was/is called Södra kurvan (South corner).

    Yeah, the RS 3100 is a nice piece of kit, and a distinctive looker that I like. And for the really insane '70s GT stuff, we do have the DRM Revival cars.
    As for a track, while I've been quite aware of Anderstorp for some time, out of that list you showed, I think my top pick would have been Brno.
    Funnily enough, in some ways, I think I'd perhaps like Dubai GP as a #2 track pick. Spa would probably win out in the end, but it's not Classic Spa.
    Interestingly, I'm pretty sure it was a Porsche 914/6 that was the top GT finisher at Le Mans in 1970. I can imagine all the rain that year may have helped.
    I'll have to have a bit of a look at the mod content for this one.
    Anyway, a fun watch, and you need to not abuse your tires so much. lol

Trying to install the anjversary mod first then I will install P&G which I assume is compatible with it. P&G got overlooked when I first installed back in the day because I was heavily into both GT Legends and rFactor 1. I also never installed standalone so never got to see the different UI scheme or at least I can't remember seeing it. How does this compare to rF1 HistoriX mod I wonder. Time to find out.

    I played GT Legends quite a lot back in the day and I loved it, but I think this mod is what GTL should've actually been.
    I didn't mind that GTL was simulating modern historic racing, to be honest back then I didn't even know it was a thing in real life and that alone made it interesting, but I did wonder why they didn't go for the original '60s/'70s setting.
    Looking back on it from a more mature perspective (and without having any background on how GTL was made), I assume they didn't go for the original setting due to licensing problems. I can't imagine it would've been feasible to go about getting a licensing deal from teams/manufacturers/competitions that have changed names, owners, affiliations or outright don't exist anymore.

    - Should I use GT Legends or GTR2 to get Power & Glory, as I have both - on disc - somewhere?
    - Which is the more fun, the BMW Batmobile or the Capri RS3100?
    - Which is the more evocative sound, the roar of the engine or the squeal of the Dunlop bias ply tyres as if they're saying "PLEEEEASSE STOP THIS AGONY!!!!"?
    - Why are Porsche 914's so unappreciated? (Actually I can answer that - they had a bit of an identity crisis being sold as VW's and Porsches. There was a vid posted by Big Car about the 914 recently.)

When rF2 originally came out, I thought we were going to see a lot of historic content, with Tim Wheatley often mentioning it, but sadly it never happened.
    As a side note, the Historix mod for rFactor 1 is worth a look too. It has a larger roster if I remember correctly. It's a shame we never got to see the teams joining forces and bringing all those cars to AC.

      Then, if you own tactile transducers, you can even set SimHub up to emulate grinding. But it only works with the above mentioned plugin.
