I didn't play this when it came out, I played for the first time in 2016 and since then, pound for pound it's still one of the most authentic experiences that I've had that also mirror a lot of my real racing experiences.
It can be rough to set up, but if you have some patience to spare, it can be a very rewarding experience.

A funny trivia bit about this game is that the Roos brothers, owners of Roos Optima Racing, who ran the Viper GTS-R in the FIA GT Series in the early 2000s, were actively involved in the developement of both GTR and GTR2. They actually got some of the Developers to drive the car for a few laps, and they were surprised at how it was almost impossible to spin the car compared to the other ways cars were shown to behave in other sims. That is part of the reason why GTR and GTR2 are so massively different compared to other sims of the time, because the devs actually got to drive the cars. (Well, one of them, atleast)

SimBin was indeed founded by Ian Bell, Henrik Roos and Johan Roos. Quite spectacular that some of the founders and devs for the game is fully and realistically represented in the game itself. That gives the game alot of credibility.

GTR2 for me is so far the only game, which when fired up really makes you believe you are in an actual race weekend, getting the same vibe I get when I'm at my local track. Not sure what it is exactly, but they absolutely nailed that aspect.

Don't forget Race 07. Bang on with the braking feedback. This is my biggest gripe with ACC because there is absolutely no braking feedback and locking up is like an on/off switch.

I love the way the brakes feel in this game. Compared to Assetto Corsa where you mash the pedal down to get any sort of stopping power, I feel that GTR 2 allows me to touch the brakes lightly around a medium speed corner to really adjust and control my momentum. The car reacts to very minute depressions of the brake pedal which I don't see often in some sims even today.

Back in the day I was strictly an ovals only guy. But when EA yeeted Papyrus from the NASCAR license, I was dying for a new sim when GTR 2 came around and picked it up at Circuit City. It literally changed my life, and my perspective on other racing series in the world.

  • @Pluginz

    Nice video 🙂
GTR2 works very with the force feedback. You have to get the steering and the FFB notched together, so the grip is at maximum. The front skipping goes along with the FFB.
But yes, i agree. The old Gmotor2 engine does become very predictable after time.
GT Legends seems to be alot more difficult to find the maximum grip level inconjunction with the force feedback.
Im at the stage now where im trying all my old sims again, but with a playstation 2 pad.
Managed to get the force feedback working very well with the pad, and the experience is pretty good.
Im getting the same notchy front grip thumping through the gamepad and feels more or less the same as my old G25 wheel did.
Keep up the videos and thank you. 🙂

If you install the P&G mod you get a weird mix of AC and GTR2 physics (as the physics for P&G were made by Aris), which means that suddenly all the cars have twice as much inertia and it feels like there is a bag of cement in the trunk, just like in AC.

    • @stenovitz
      @stenovitz ปีที่แล้ว +5

Never thought of PnG in that way, though raced PnG vividly since early versions. But remember driving out the Shelby 427 at classic Hermanos Rodriquez entering first corner I suddenly felt quite a handful of torque. And I think my G27 wheel electro motors broke down due to PnG output resulted in exceeding the torque limits for my wheel. But until then it was a pleasure to drive and PnG is still among my top 3 among mod packs of all times across sims.

I absolutely support all of your arguments, especially how you described to be immediately comfortable in the cars and how intuitive/interactive the general feel for thresholds is. I have always said and on every occasion keep saying that rF1 (thus to an extend GTR2 because same engine) trains and pushes you to be a better driver and is a way better platform to learn and improve, more fun and confidence inspiring at the limit. And this is exactly what the main priority in sims should be, and what pushing a car on track irl feels like. It's not the springy squishy unstable mess that tries to throw you off all the time like in AC, but a very comfortable 'tacky' zone as you describe it to play around with slip in. Unfortunately the rare times you talk to someone with sim experience at the track irl, in most cases all they ever tried is AC or iRacing on a laggy TV screen, and so trying to make an argument about rF1 while also having to explain the ridiculous amount of configuration, modding and plugins you need to set up to make it work well, will eventually make it a futile effort and make you look like an entitled nerd.
I honestly believe that we were born in the right time to experience these games in their prime with packed multiplayer sessions.
Anyway pretty much ALL the drivers here never push their car to the extend that they actually have to do feel out and occasionally push beyond the slip angle or do any kind of corrections. And when they do, they spin and/or crash, as a result in general the cars will always be set up to be on the understeery side. The spring rates, sway bars and alignment that I run in my miata are so far away from any kind of "known balanced settings", that it is considered almost heretical and some people even said that they wonder how I don't spin every corner. In my opinion this was absolutely mandatory to actually get the car to rotate enough - but try to explain that to someone that doesn't even understand the concept of continuously feeling out the slip angle instead of "steer until tire goes squee". And how else are you going to learn it, if not by dumping hundreds of hours into a sim that makes you comfortable in that zone. And that is exactly what those old ISI motor engine sims did best!

I got GTR2 on release. Also grabbed a Logitech wheel. It never really clicked for me. Part of that I think was that I didn't take enough initiative to get better - with TH-cam only barely coming into existence, it never even really occurred to me to look up how to get better. I remember trying some time trial competition on a forum and just being utterly humbled and demotivated as I was so many seconds off the pace. Kinda wished I'd stuck with it and had to initiative to read up on how to be a better driver. Also I got annoyed at how the AI would be so fast in quali and so slow in a race.
Alas, many years later I get Gran Turismo Sport a few months before Gran Turismo 7 was released, and I just fell for sim racing all over again. Got a wheel and eventually tried iRacing. Hooked. I then decided to buy GTR2 on Steam and got that all hooked up and modded to look good, and man, it's a great sim. Lot of fun. Really also enjoy GT Legends - that game works well out of the box too, though some of the car sounds are a little rough.

    GTR2 is best sim, HYPE.
Anyway the Maserati is properly also one of the best cars in the game, is that plus the Ferrari 550 and the C5 Corvette, and when I say best I mean best "driving" car, not necessarily the fastest.
One critique i would have of this game it feel like the cars for the time make to much grip, but besides that GTR2 is properly the only game that gives you the "correct" sim experience in that it teaches you have to drive, teaches you the different courses and gives you a good sense of how different cars feel.
You are on your own on setups and most of defaults in gtr2 suck ass, all of the Porches in the game are undrivable.

gtr2 is still my bar for racing sims, which is probably why everything we consider modern now feels so underwhelming. crew chief plugin + the fia gt 00-09 mod + sho competition ai is the pinnacle of simracing, up there with shutoku revival project and the brianring tracks for nr2003.

gt legends would drive better if it had actual tire models.. but all the cars have tires from the 40s.. that is why PnG was so great.

Still remember back in the day when I started modifying the game files and I ended up upgrading the C5-R engine file to give it A TON of power. Funny part was then joining an online lobby only to find out the car data was loaded locally as opposed to coming from the server, so I had a waaay overpowered GT car and kept overtaking everyone like crazy (even playing with a keyboard at the time!)

I’ve never gotten into GTR, but I did get into GT Legends. That game is the same as this but with historical racecars from the ‘60s & ‘70s. From little touring cars like mini coopers, abarth 1000s, etc, to endurance prototypes such as the Porsche 906 or Ford GT40. I have both a physical copy and on steam

Basically, this and rF1 were the originals in terms of not only a simulation, but having the cars and tracks and with little to no TH-cam stuff about these games for a couple of years, you had a learn by yourself and it was an extremely fun experience. Back then, taking a car, onto any track was so much fun. Because you had to learn it all yourself. Now, any tom, dick or harry can start off a simulator game and have no reason to atleast be semi compitent. With all the tips and tricks and guides of how to setup your heel/pedal setup, how to get a good setup and how to drive it right. Back then, we had none of this. I am proud to say I am an OG in Simracing, having been doing it since 2005 (rF1 beta, NR2003 and GTR2 were my first games)

U're wrong. Assetto Corsa wasn't my first sim, GTR2 was. I got it from friend who got it as gift and he didn't liked it. That happened very close to release date. It was big box with onboard screenshot when u opened it and 3 CDs. I loved it but I was 12 years old and any league couldn't allow me to participate and most of public servers was locked so I got borred of driving with AI and returned to my customization garage (Street Legal Racing:REDLINE) for next 4 years and returned to simracing by participating in Live For Speed online races.
I hated Steam Edition when I realised that they removed Ferrari and Porsche cars but then I found how to ulock them with HexEditor + CrewChief team released VR plugin that works only with Steam Edition so...

I've had this sim since it came out. It use to be my got-to driving sim because, well... because of what you said. That and the fact that there were so many cars and tracks and mods available for it and it was so incredibly easy to mod.
That being said, I have always had an issue with the AI in this sim. It is evil. They are unnecessarily aggressive and if they can't beat you they will take you out. I use to have a recording I had saved of a race I was in at Anderstorp. In it you can clearly see a black Lamborghini come out of pit lane as I passed by and you can see it suddenly swerve to the left to try and wreck me. It missed and ended up off the track almost in the woods. That's how I know it was intentional. There was absolutely no reason for that Lambo to swerve like that. So, when other sims started coming out, I got away from it for a few years.
I recently reinstalled it because I figured out that there aren't really any other sims that have mods available for the old GT1 series that I use to love (besides maybe rFactor, which is basically the same game).
I see that you have the Steam version. The graphics you have are allot better than what I get, even though I have everything maxed out cuz I have a fairly stout PC. I have heard that I can use my CD key in Steam to get a free Steam version of GTR2 and GT Legends. Maybe I'll give that a try.

Yep, I remember when the harder the game the more sim it was according to the "hardcore purists". F1 challenge was simply impossible to drive and actually had a handling bug I believe, same with GP Legends. GP4 was the best of the bunch, at least out of the box as some of the good mods made GP and F1C much better.
