  • In part II learn why I say no to Soldiers and NCO's appearing before the promotion board. There's no stock litmus test, but I'll try to share some of the characteristics and common threads with those who don't do well.

    You said the magic words.. Tie. My board is tomorrow and I’ve been so focused on everything else I had to run to the store and buy one. Get stoked. 🤣

    Had my very first board today. It was for promotion and nervous got the best of me. 😩😩 I know the answers but I would fumble them when asked the question. It was a learning experience for myself. An hopefully success will come out of the next one.

    I got told today that I will be going to the promotion board next month to become an E-6 and am so nervous about it. I'm new to the unit and I've only been a 5 since Nov 1. Just brings back flashbacks of my first and only board and how I butchered that but somehow passed it.

      They must see something you that you don’t. Trust in them - and in yourself. You got this!!

    I went to an AGR board and did not get the position. They suggested I talk a little more always in the board I get so nervous and forget what I was going to say and I shorten my responses.

    Would you rather soldiers say they don’t know the answer nor the regulation at all or they say the incorrect answer confidently?

    • @BillStoker
      @BillStoker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Such a great question! If someone doesn't know the book answer, but can give a short answer as it means to them, and it's reasonable - I'll take that. If they don't know and you kinda know that it's probably the wrong answer, then I would personally rather hear that they didn't know.

    Been a long time since I was in the Army. I gave 6 years to the Infantry. In 2001 I went all the way to 4th ID SOY and destroyed it. Great advice here. Back then people dared not show up to boards unprepared. I’m noticing a certain amount of entitlement with the younger generation, at least now days, that I don’t remember being common place. To me everything you said, should already be well known. Presently, how often or what percentage of participants are going before board members totally not ready?

    • @BillStoker
      @BillStoker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quite a few - but that’s just as much on leadership as it is on the individual.
      Appreciate your time and service brother. 🇺🇸

      @@BillStoker I appreciate your continued service. The skills learned participating in these boards translate into the world. I recently went through a promotional process which involved an oral interview before a panel of four people. Thanks to skills I learned in the Army boards, I aced it. Keep up the good work and stay safe!!!

    I do have a question, is it frowned upon to apologize if a simple mistake is made

    • @BillStoker
      @BillStoker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s okay to correct yourself. Plenty of ways to say it that are ok. Plenty of ways that are not.

    • @treemann6465
      @treemann6465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BillStoker what would you recommend then? I have a board coming up and my usual slip up in military bearing is my politeness, I want to immediately say something like my apologies or something similar

    • @BillStoker
      @BillStoker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      “Correction, the answer is…”
      “1SG, Id like to correct myself -“
      “To be more specific….”
      You got this!

      @@BillStoker Or, do it like officers do, "I'd like to update my answer". Officers never correct themselves. They always update.
