- Shyamalan's TRAP movie review from a Shyamalan and Hitchcock fan/critic
Is it a gift movie for his daughter Saleka? It is a father daughter bonding movie overall in both plot and filmmaking. period. Josh Hartnett is good, Saleka singing is good, the rest is poo.
You said you wasn't a fan of Glass. But I can hear the fan all time long.
I'm a fan of the character Glass from Unbreakable, but not the GLASS film.
Naaaah.
I laughed quite a lot, as opposed to something like The Happening, which took a Rifftrax commentary to make me chuckle at it :)
While watching "Trap" in the theatre, getting progressively more intoxicated I kept getting a phrase "serial killer sitcom" stuck in my head. If anything I was only let down by the fact that Cooper didn't actually kill his entire family when Lady Raven locked herself up in the toilet, THAT was a letdown for me, took quite a large "awwww" out of me. Could've been so funny if he opened the door covered in blood with a fireman axe in hand, then blaming HER for forcing him to do it, like in that awesome scene in that "Hunters" series where a nazi officer kills everyone at the cookout party after a camp survivor lady recognizes him and makes a scene.
Because Hartnett is genuinely great in the film - any time he has to talk to another human being the tension between him and them is tickling me real good. So it is a perfectly fine film, enjoyable, entertaining to a fault and bullshit, which is great, because who in their right mind would want to watch a realistic serial killer movie directed by the cheese factory that is Shyamalan ?)
@@viewtiful1doubleokamihand253 you bring up a great point, you're right, there was a lot of the time I was sitting there wondering saying to myself, " Is this supposed to be a comedy? Because it's highly unbelievable and the surrounding characters acting was so bad compared to him. And there were so many plot holes that never got answered, like how did the kidnapping happen and why, was there a purpose to his madness? What is the beef between the 2 girls? Why is everyone cooperating with him and going along with no resistance when everybody knows there a killer on the loose. I found it all highly ridiculous in all aspects. It couldn't possibly be a serious film!
@@Bradli Precisely ! It isn't a serious film at all, it's a cheesefest, a chuckle-goof exploitation shlock, as are ALL of Shyamalan films - a pure high-concept nonsense that puts fun and the "what if !?" idea above anything and everything realistic.
There are vague clues to stuff you are mentioning: there is a very convenient camera footage of Cooper snatching the guy into the van, then there is a monologue by Cooper when he is driving Lady Raven away instead of her driver about how he is infuriated by those who are "complete" yet can be sliced as good as anyone else, vague mentions of abuse by his mother, which if you are versed in real-world serial killers means that there is a childhood scar that persist all throught the life of an individual and in case of Cooper seems to show that same as, say, Francis Dollarhyde in "Manhunter" ("Red Dragon") he seems to hate happy complete families and people who are accomplished and feel good about it. At least that is how I got it. As for girls... who cares ?) Teens constantly have stupid relation drama, if anything I am pretty sure the entire point to her being "bullied" is to justify the existence of that other girls' mother at the concert, who is annoying Cooper, but can't be killed, because she is WAY TOO CLOSE to him.
@@viewtiful1doubleokamihand253 yeah but what if we found out his daughter deserved it, maybe she's actually the bad girl. At the end I was hoping there was gonna be another twist, that actually it was the mother that was the killer or maybe the whole family are psychopaths, ALL which would have been BRILLIANT ideas instead of what we got, a movie that was spoiled with the trailer. It was sad and if you don't believe me, look how it's rated by both critical and general audience. But I'm glad you were able to enjoy it as a comedy, because it was laughably bad and predictable.
😆
“the problem with shyamalan movies is that they lack a certain eroticism”
- dennis reynolds
😂yeah he's always tried to make "clean" family films without any sex or graphic violence. In fact I'm not sure any even had a love story of any sort
@@Bradli i guess you haven’t seen it’s always sunny in philadelphia then 😂
@@gonzacollaowhat does he have to do with it? He didn't write or direct Sunny in Philly?
😂😂😂😂
@@gonzacollao😂😂he doesn't get it
I'm not going to watch your video, I am just going to answer your question.... No, it isn't. Not when we have the happening and lady in the water. Sit. Down
@@JodeaKegan I agree, I too think Happening is the worst and Old is 2nd worst. I happen to like Lady in the Water but I get why most people don't. It was a film based on a European myth that I happen to know and it's really about a writer and what a writer needs to write a story. So, I enjoyed it because I am a bit of a writer. But I get why people don't, however at least it had real suspense in it which Trap has none. No suspense at all, everyone is so comically helpful there is no doubt he will get out and no one really cares about the victim because we weren't made to. But yeah it's bad😂but not the worst
Yeah, his movies truly are escapes from reality, more than most other directors. I really-respect the way that he shamelessly promoted his daughter and her musical talent with Trap. No one can honestly say that this is ALL 100% nepotism. She DOES have singing talent. This movie just brought a lot more publicity to what has already been there for a few years now.
@@JosephSchwarzkopf-m9kif I had to guess, id wager why he made it, especially considering the entire movie revolves around a father daughter bonding date🤣
Thats still The Happening
@@chaunguyen5157 100% agreed. Where would you rank OLD?
@@Bradli Ooo. I didn't hate the beginning (although started slow), but the last half just made 0 sense. Its better than Airbender, worse than Lady in the Water?
@@chaunguyen5157 really? It was the reverse for me, I liked the beginning, was wondering how it would develop and then the end, everything was so predictable, everyone was helping him, there was no tension, acting was so bad, everything went to easy, there was no suspense at all for me and then I expected it to end the same. PLUS I expected a twist like, maybe the mother was the actual killer or the whole family were psychos. THAT would've been great. But yeah, lYou're right, I forget about Airbender because I walked out of it, didn't see it all.
@Bradli haha, I was referring to Old. Yeah, I agree with your analysis.
No ... have you watch The Last Air Bender? = that's pretty bad.
Shyamalan does horror very well but when it comes to non-horror = he's bad, really bad at it.
Yeah, he tries to make "suspense" or "thrillers" not horror. He tries to make them family friendly as well. He's very hot or cold, but keeps fans always curious to find out if it is gonna be a hit or a flop. He hasn't had a hit in a while. This one is really just a Father Daughter bonding film in disguise, him bonding with his daughter Saleka and trying to launch her career.
@@Bradli ... sorry, i group "suspense" and "thrillers" in the same group as "horror". Glass was meant to be a super hero movie and despise the "A" list actors, it was still bad.
Had a peak in some of his works mostly involving "horror/thriller/suspense" but surprising Stuart Little and She's All That (both credit movie script) are on that list, both were pretty good films. But then i saw After Earth = which imo is his WORST film, i don't even recommend anyone to go see it b/c it's THAT bad ... the fact i had to google search Shymalan to remember what he directed makes me remember why it was such as bad film
@@darkgatheringwfb5759 right, horror and suspense/thriller are different. Example North by Northwest is a thriller, Psycho is horror, the birds horror, vertigo thriller, Horror are usually (nowaday) Rrated and include violence.
I liked After Earth simply for the fact, again, like most of his films are about family dynamics, a son coming of age film, growing up as a famous father's son etc. So I liked it in that aspect and also it was visually pretty to watch. But yeah wasn't very exciting.
I thought The happening was his worst by far, it failed on all levels. I haven't seen The Visit.
You're right about Glass, felt like it was a waste of talent. Had a lot of potential.
A successful-Capitalist, for sure. Him now being able to create opportunities for his children to also be successful? That only underscores the fact that he has succeeded in the American Capitalist system.👍😎
@@JosephSchwarzkopf-m9kgood for him! He's doing better than anyone in my family and he has managed to entertain us for hours with his work good for him
No, it's not. Not even close. You clearly don't understand what this was about or what kind of movie M Night was trying to make. Trap is a classic Hitchcock cat and mouse thriller.
Trap is good. It's not a great movie but Josh Hartnett is great in it.
@@LukeLovesRose you're right about Josh, he was good. I forgot to mention that. This movie is about father daughter bonding like Signs was about Faith, family and tragedy. Yes there is a suspense movie taking place around that but those are the underlying messages. Yes it was a mousetrap "thriller" but I found very little suspense because every side character in the movie was being unbelievably helpful to him 😂I was eye rolling through the whole thing.
Winner, winner,🐓 dinner!😆
"Shyamalan Logic" The Movie...
Its definitely one of his worst. There are so many lame movies made by him.
Agreed, not THE worst but I'd say bottom 3
@@Bradli I actually liked The Village! (But I'm not going to claim that I think it's any good. I just enjoyed it.)
@@HonestDepression101 yes same here, I thought it was pretty good tho the twist was a bit of a let down
No, it is a fantastic movie :) I disagree with everyone saying it is not a good movie.
@@Pollyanna_Nielsen glad you liked it. He financed it himself for 30mill. Hopefully he will keep making more
Right! I really enjoyed this one and knock at the cabin door
no

A funny comment(does not reflect my own personal view😆) from another review video:
He just makes movies for paying his bills and his wife’s
expenses, period. His movies have been crap for years now. I don’t why they keep giving him money to make crap. Dude needs a break to India and come back with a clean head.
The part about them giving him money is way off, because he’s been self financing a lot of his recent movies and he’s one of the few headliner directors who’s actually making original movies.
Maybe he should also try his hand at writing and directing some Bollywood movies, as well?🤔😆
I will ignore the racist tropes in your comment just to let you know he financed this himself and several of his last few projects, perhaps hi daughter's The Watchers as well.
So don't worry nobody gave him money to make this, he financed it and appears he will make a little profit after streaming rights and digital/physical sales... Not even Spielberg had a hit on every movie...
