Right Start Math is very hands on and a lot of oral sums. There are some worksheets here and there, but they’re not like a typical worksheet. They include a lot of games as well. As someone who did not understand math during my schooling years, this has helped me in my math skills, and also in having the confidence to teach it to my kids. My one complaint about it, is that it doesn’t have a lot of repetition. But, I supplement with math drills and it seems to be working for now.

I have real issues with math and find it very hard to not let that seep into our lessons 🙈
I am so drawn to SCM math but nervous it may not have enough instruction for me to teach.

I really appreciate that math according to CM is not just a textbook of sums. My sister and I agreed that we would have enjoyed it more in school if we had known how it could relate to our world- our day to day lives. I also saw the sample for the arithmetic series you linked at Simply Charlotte Mason. Do you think that is a good replacement for the Preschool math at home or a great follow-up?

Hey Sarah! Great question! I wouldn't begin using the SCM Elementary Arithmetic series until age six (form 1/first grade). I loved the Kate Snow Preschool Math at Home program for my Kinderleben (aka Kindergarten) students! I will continue to use this for the "prechool" years. However, I wouldn't recommend the Kindergarten Math With Confidence program, as it's workbook-style and not oral like CM recommends ;) Hope this helps!

I find the math with confidence is all oral lessons, if you eliminate the student book. Also life of Fred is a literature based program

@@CharlotteMasonMotherhood Thank you for this clarification. This was an exact question I was trying to sort out. I really appreciate your content and the beautiful way you introduce and explain Charlotte Mason’s concepts.

I have a struggling 2nd grader. Simple sums have been hard for her, would you recommend just starting at the beginning of Elementary Arithmetic book 1 and working our way through? I struggle myself with feeling like she’s behind, and I’m really trying to get out of that mindset.

I believe there is a placement test on their website. I knew my son was advanced in math, but I wasn’t sure if he’d be ready for book 2 yet and the placement test said to start on page 70 of book 1. We have loved it!

I would definitely recommend starting at the beginning, just to familiarize yourself with the math style and give her some extra practice! She's only behind if you're comparing her to other kids/grade levels! Meet her where she is, and don't stress too much, mama!
