  • Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
    Woodturning - Stacked Leather Mallet
    In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn an oak mallet with a stacked leather handle.
    When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.
    If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you hitting the like button and if you'd like to see more from me you can simply click the subscribe button.

    Very nice to see a lefty show us how to make his version of a "practical" Cooper's mallet. Although, I enjoy seeing bowls, trays and plates being made by a lot of different on-line turners, I sure don't want to see them ALL the time. This session was different, totally unexpected, and very enjoyable to watch. I would definitely enjoy seeing more "practical" projects. Thanks.

    Absolutely gorgeous multi-generation Mallet!
    Have a 2 1/2lb soft leather face 15" handle one I bought when I turned 16. Be 71 next month and my future son-in-law asked what I used that Monster with. Told him everything. Rescued a drunk who rolled his car and the Police having problem busting window to get him out 40 yrs ago. One wack, no more divers side window. He's getting my tools when I head upstairs to be w/all my pets we've had all of these 50+ years of Marriage!

    Jack, you are completely and totally different of other woodturners I follow. Your imagination is beyond the limit, you combine different techniques to achieve your best result, you pay a great attention on details and the polishing job is amazing. One single thing please pay attention: health and safety, especially when using the electric saw. Use another stick to push the wood, especially when your hand is very near the moving saw. For the rest, everything is fine. All my best and good luck!

    Really great idea well executed ... the only thing I would do differently would be to heat the steel rings on the stove before attaching to the mallet head to give them a tighter and more durable fit.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Thanks for watching Ryan, I did consider that but didn’t want to burn the rings on as it leaves unsightly marks. Instead iv used kiln dried wood that will swell somewhat in our fairly humid climate and I hope that as the end grain flairs over time with use it will also tighten down the rings.. I do agree tho.. smaller tenons and hot rings would
      Make for a tighter fit. 👍🏻

    This is some epic next level stuff! You're an inspiration and a bad influence. The bowls ball to box thing the other week made me shelve my current projects and go bowls ball hunting. And now this has come at a really bad time because my house is surrounded by scaffolding right now. I'm thinking "would they miss the end of one of them poles?" 🤔

  • @robohippy
    @robohippy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You obviously had a LOT of fun making that. Far more work than I would have done for a similar tool, but it does look really nice, and no one will have one like it. With the steel ferules you used on the ends of the head, standard M2 high speed steel would cut them down, as in facing the top and bottom of them. The through bolt was a good idea too. I did construction for years, and didn't like the metal handled hammers at all. The leather on that should dampen all vibration issues....

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, it’s a lovely grip. I didn’t consider turning the mild steel with hand tools but I’ve turned allot of brass on the wood lathe so probably should have gave it a shot.
      I definitely made this for the sake of making it rather than needing a mallet.. as, I’ve got the same old mallet I turned some 15 years ago for braying stuff, this little one was something I’d like my kids to look at when they are old men and laugh at how daft their old man was 😆
