Thanks Sam. Great video. Tubes look fantastic, definitely better in a set. I learnt a lot. I’ve always wanted to turn some tubes, I think I definite have a go now. Metal reactive paints, great idea. I’ll have to find some down in Oz. I’ll check out Richard Raffan’s video. He may have some paint info there for me. Maybe a turned hat or lampshade would be interesting for a 4 ways video
The process is interesting. It's a shame that the reactive paint is no longer available. The warping produces some interesting shapes. I'm not sure of their function though. If they had not been through drilled I would think they would make interesting vases. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
from my part, just to leave two or three things here,... yes, there are still metal reactive paints on the market,... what are these tubes for,... for contemplation on a shelf in a room or art gallery like any canvas, it has no function, it doesn't have to have it,... lastly, congratulations Sam, firstly for the choice and work, secondly, for the tribute to Raffan,... I love this set of tubes and I love the way they were decorated, the top edge with this canary yellow was a choice as surprising as beautiful in the end,...
Thanks very much. I totally agree. They are useless but very very interesting to look at and so much fun to turn if you can make these go right through the pit they warp quite a bit. This is about the fourth set. I’ve made but thank you very much for your comments. Sam
I made several set's of tubes myself decoreted the same way and I love them, they are as you say, fun to do and a beautiful famaly of objects to see, I don't even like to sell them,... all the best Sam,... tarso
I will have to try that, Sam. I see that Modern Masters also makes the metal reactive paint available on Amazon or Craft Supplies. Intead of one patina aging solution like the Verday that does all, they have a separate one for rust, blue and green. I am still using up my original Verday metal reactive paint.
Thanks, Mike. Just saw this comment. I did find another supplier if I remember, I’ll send you a link The trouble with the modern masters paint in my opinion, it is very expensive but like you I’m still using my stash of Verday paint after many years and it still works OK Sam
It is really fun to work with this paint. I am getting better at predicting what my results would be, but sometimes it just does its own thing. Have fun. Sam
I think like most artwork it really doesn’t have a purpose. I find these tubes to be a very good display piece. I recently brought them to a club for show and tell and had many many comments. They are a bit challenging to make, but can warp a lot, which is fun and I like stuff that’s really different thanks for your comment Sam.
Yes, lots of different ways to do a particular procedure. I really can’t remember exactly what I did probably true them up first and then drilled.??? Sam
I enjoy seeing tubes. Like the metal reactive paint as well. Question: Why are you using the twist drill to drill out the center then coming back with a Fostner bit to enlarge the hole? Doesn’t the Fostner bit use the center point in the wood to start it on line? Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for this. Making tubes is something I'll have to try! 🙂
Love them. I'm all "set" to make my tubes!
Really interesting design and they turned out great!
The metal reactive paint on the black looks fantastic, and nice to have a blast of jazz :)
Great project, off to see the other three.
Love it Sam, those turn out greae
Very cool Sam!

What would one do with them?

Great job Sam. But why not drill the center out first thing on the blank, then use a cone center to true it up?

If you actually Watch the show, You will see the answer to your question. Starting at the 13:00 min mark. Your Welcome.
A very nice set indeed. If you did the inside entirely, would you do that before or after the outside? Thanks for the video.
That’s a very good question. I really didn’t put the metal reactive paint on the inside. I just colored it with some black dye
Questions Sam, why didn’t you turn them end-grain?
They probably would not Warp as much as they do, being Cross grain.
Exactly. And if you could leave the pith in, they warp even more
No music needed. Ever.
