I have to say, I've been trying to grow shiitake mushrooms for the last year. The knowledge I've got from this video has increased my yield so much I don't know how to thankyou. Much love brother!
Thank you i enjoyed your video ,we commercially grow shiitake , mainly 3782 and have our cycles down for every week , .We also have found a 4 week rotation of blocks after 1st flush for a second fruiting which we initiate after soak and then put in separate fruiting room , This has been valuable addition to our production . once again thanks ,
This man is in sync with his blocks. These are looking very healthy. I'd buy one of these any day. A little tip what i found: do not fondle your cultures at all helps them a lot. Do not move cultures around like that. Just inocculate and LET THEM SIT. Maybe check for contamination once every 5 days if possible without touching and you'll see they will be a lot happier. They really don't like to be fondled and shaken too much. Just because it looks healthy doesn't mean you should shake it around and shine bright lights on them like that. The less you move mycelium the happier it is. Just let it go. Don't be a control freak. Once you reach the level of proffessionalism this guy has just stop touching the cultures and you'll be the king of mushrooms. First find out what substrate, temp, humidity your strain likes best. Once you have that down: stop touching them so much and boom.
First of all I just like to reiterate what most everyone else has said "you are the man!" That was an absolutely awesome video a little intense but awesome. I'm in my first go round of ever trying shiitake in blocks. I have shitaki in logs but not grown yet in blocks. Your detailed week by week explanation took some of the worry out of my brain, I know shiitake can take a while and it seems like I wanna speed things up or worry about what I'm seeing but you made it seem perfect. I wish I could drop you a picture because I didn't use fresh wood chips or sawdust & bran. I made a concoction of straw, oak pellets, wood pellets, a little bit of alfalfa pellets, coffee grinds & gypsum. The only question I would have for you is do you have a set PH that you start off with? Do you think that might have something to do with the variations and how the blocks run in the same strain?
I grew shiitake at home years ago. Made my little blocks in coffee cans and submerged them under water in the refrigerator over night when they were ready to fruit. I had some good luck and it was really fun. Would like to grow them again some day. I used pellets broken back down to saw dust and I think bran. My gain spawn was straight popcorn.
Thanks for the info. Your videos are straight forward and to the point. I felt like the twenty minutes flew by with the wealth of knowledge being presented. Temping the blocks is something you don't hear from other growers.
I think how easy it is to grow shiitake comes down to how good the culture is. I used to say shiitake was easy too. I grew them PF Tek, then inoculating spawn bags, then grain spawn to bags. They grew amazingly well, in 5-6 grows I never had a failure. Then I lost my culture to contam. Since that time I have tried dozens of other cultures and NONE have ever been nearly as easy to grow.
Thank you for your time and sharing your experience. As far as using bran, do you have a recommendation on alternatives for those of us who cannot consume gluten? I’ve had difficulty finding good info regarding this.

Hi. Just a quick qestion. Do I have to slit the bags to give the blocks some air to get them brown? Will it help? They are 2 months old and still mostly white with a lot of popcorn.
Too Dry can cause contamination - makes sense.... If it gets too hot, probability of contamination goes through the roof. - OK - fascinating. Never heard that popcorn term.
hey, how do shiitake grain should look like? Thick white (my grain achieve it ~ 5 weeks) or transparent like Lion's mane (~ 3 weeks). What do you prefer? Thanks!
I am a first time cultivator, my first 3 blocks made on Jan 21th 2020 were easy to colonize (they will be ready to fruit in a few days from today) I've also made 4 more blocks on March 13th 2021 & will be making 4 or 8 more blocks in the next few days because they have been the most reliable mushroom I have grown so far. this strain of Shiitake originally came from a store bought mushroom clone that I paid $0.55 for. I cloned it on agar, turned it into a 600ml jar of liquid culture. i currently have about 20 strains of mushrooms, mostly from cloning wild or store bought mushrooms. I will continue to cultivate Shiitake due to the ease of cultivating (I hope I do not have any of the problems that you have had in the past) i live in a small apartment in the big city, i get shitty fresh air flow & its working out very well for me. i'll be uploading a vid to my channel soon as they stop testing the fire alarms.
Nice video man, such good material. I never get such dense popcorning as you showed in your blocks, i am guessing thats a temp problem? I cant rly control temps in my incubation Room .
Did you try all in one bags for 3790? If yes - does it work? What is the sawdust / grain ratio? With grain inoculation I am having issues with contam all the time, even with the flowhood, spraying etc. So thinking to try all in one tech. Any advice?
Guess I got lucky because my first agar dish and block colonized.i got tissue from a local asian market.and made my block with snake aspen bedding some fine sawdust and wheat bran.
Hi , very good video, a lot of info. I have a question about the block,, when i put the block in the growing room, do i have to take it out of the bag or can i keep it in the bag and just cut a slot so the mushroom will grow out of the slot? Thank you. Martin
@@earthangelmushrooms2118 during colonisation you should be able to leave them in dim light or even complete dark. If they colonize in dark and you introduce more light for fruiting they fruit better potentially. Looking at the light in the video is definately too bright for my taste especially for colonizing. Look how they live in nature: they colonize and once they have colonized the area the mycel will expose itself to surfaces simply because it has colonized everything in that area. Then it fruits. So mycel really grow in the dark in their natural habitat while the fruit grows in dim light in the shade on the floor of the forest. Rarely do mushrooms like to expose themselves to direct sunlight in nature (except species that grow in open fields maybe). Woodlovers usually should respond best to conditions resembling a forest floor biome.

Great tutorial, I have one question I haven’t been able to find an answer for anywhere yet and thats in regards to light requirements? I’ve colonized my shiitake blocks in the dark for 10 days or so until fully colonized then from there I put them in an incubation chamber on a 12/12 light cycle, is this alright? Or should they be exposed to minimal light until they’re ready to fruit? Thank you.
