SHIITAKE ON STRAW, Mycelium Emporium "Straw" Strain

  • My first attempt at growing Shiitake mushrooms on shredded wheat straw based substrate using the "Straw" Shiitake strain from Mycelium Emporium. Final block composition was roughly 50% straw and 50% sawdust/grain spawn mix by wet weight. I did experience quite a few mutants and aborts, many more than I typically experience on straight sawdust. This coupled with relatively meager yields hold me back from really calling this success, but it certainly can be done. I did manage to fruit some monster Shiitake that had great flavor and interestingly had a softer texture than the fruits I usually get on sawdust. I really enjoyed them. Hopefully you find the video useful. MUSHITAKE LOVE 🍄😘
    Here is a video showing how I pasteurize my straw:

    I've seen this done before on an old video of this 70 year old guy in Arcadia California and it blows my mind because their isn't very much information I've seen on this technique! Thank you for trying this out! Wow quality of quantity those are some massive Shiitake!

      How do you feel between the two substrates for Shiitake wood or straw ? What one would you pick for future Shiitake grows? 2:40

      @@jacksonnc8877 Definitely sawdust, but some people have trouble sourcing sawdust, so straw is a viable option in that case.

      Cool I've checked into it a little more and straw seems to have a higher viable nitrogen content. And it will make fruits of any plant mishaped it makes sense your first flush had a bigger nutrient uptake.

    Great job. A combination of straw and pellets would work well given Shitake is a wood loving mushroom. Insure logs are fully colonized and brown before fruiting.

    Oh man. How exciting. I like this one, I've just got it recently into a couple sawdust & bran blocks . Started to popcorn a little over a week ago. I did a few with RR's half straw half sawdust (I didn't use gypsum tho)
    Time to do this though for sure 🤘☮️🤘

    I'm so glad you made this video and that I came across it! I got a bale of hay and was just gonna add the grain spawn, put the bale at the edge of the woods in the shade and just cover it with a tarp. I'm thinking that my chances of success that way would be pretty low and my chances of contamination and a total failure would be pretty high. I think I'm gonna have to follow your methods (I'm very new to growing) and will have a much better chance of success. Thank you!!!!

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try to get your hands on some straw if you can. Hay will likely contaminate on you because it contains the entire plant including seeds. Straw is what you want to use for your mushroom growing adventures.

    Wow, what a cool experiment. it got me thinking, maaaby I could put a log in a bag surrounded with straw or wood chips. Maybe it would eat through the first, then inoculate the log without drilling holes in the log. Drilling holes is way too labor intensive for me. I think it would work!

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would probably work. Also, the totem log method works really well with Shiitake and is much easier than drilling and filling. I show that method in this video:

    Every now and then growers mention that shiitakes need a slap or two for abundant pinning. Have you considered trying it also with this straw strain?
    Nice video; thank you!

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do use that technique with my sawdust blocks. With these straw blocks, I roughed them up pretty good just moving them around because they were so heavy. My issue wasn't getting them to pin, it was that half the pins were aborts or mutants.

    I don't really think that many mushrooms are as complicated as people make them out to be. Many different approaches will work, if basic requirements are met. Sure, you won't get the same result with the same technique in any place of the world, but fungi aren't the most complicated of organisms.
    That's why you should always experiment, you might just find something better or equal results but easier process

      In this video I went from LC to grain to grow bags with unsupplemented pasteurized hardwood fuel pellets for substrate. Shiitake do pretty well on just pasteurized HWFP:
