Love these monotub videos! Thank you! It's so hard to find folks willing to break the norm with gourmets and not just continue the plastic bag paradigm! I think that the gourmet community overall is a bit stuck in a place where there's a thought of "if it's not broken then don't fix it" but I think so much can be gained by exploring different fruiting techniques, trying novel substrates, and seeing how far we can push pasteurization versus sterilization (all these things not only can help decrease waste but also can possibly help make the hobby more open to more people). Thanks again!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, appreciate you 👊 I really love experimenting with all the things you mentioned. I have another monotub grow going now, hopefully it turns out.
I'm fairly new mushroom propagation and mycology but I find your videos and your highly descriptive nature incredibly motivational and use em as my go to when I'm looking for accurate down to earth information or instructions thank you very much for your time and sharing your knowledge and experience!
Super video! Great information on how to do 2nd flushes. Just starting out but that medium monotub from Microppose is definitely on my list. Thank you for all the super informative videos - you are my number one source of mushroom growing info. Keep up the great work 👍
Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This monotub grow turned out way better than expected. If you do pick up some tubs from Microppose.com don't forget you can use promo code "RENEGADE" at checkout for 10% off.
Good way to gran a commercial shiitake strain 👍 This was my first time growing them in a monotub. I was surprised how well it worked. Good luck on your grow.
Almost blew a bearing on your scale!!! That was a laugh out loud moment for sure! I love your talent for producing easy to listen to,easy to follow videos I always come away with more solid knowledge. That said,I think what I enjoy most is your experimentation with all the processes. So good!
I always get great flushes from my shiitake the first flush but never for the second. No matter what I get green mold before they pin the second time. I always use the dryout for a few weeks then rehydrate the blocks.
That happens to me too, but not on this block. It seems that trichoderma and shiitake just cohabitate nicely together. Two strategies I've heard that work to help combat that are adding a cap full of bleach to your soak water and rinsing your blocks a few times a day with fresh water during the fruiting cycle. The frequent rinsing seems to work well but isn't possible for everyone.
Wow! Those are beautiful shiitakes! I just bought fresh shiitake culture and a 50-pack of bags (yuck) - ready for fall shrooming. Would you say you prefer monotub over bags? Super impressive yield. Interesting it wasn't popcorned everywhere-Is that the next challenge---I wonder if you can get flushes sooner than the norm?
I did really like the tub grow, and honestly I came into it very skeptical. I think what I learned is that light is an important trigger for popcorning/pinning with Shiitake so I think on my next attempt I'll incubate in complete darkness and see if i can get a great first flush right off the top. I would say it's a great alternative for those looking to avoid plastic waste.
I will definitely do this again. I think you could refine these Shiitake mega blocks into a nice production regime if you were growing commercially. Thanks for watching and commenting 👊
I did grow them on straw, but haven't tried straw pellets yet. Here's a link to the video of my straw grow if you haven't seen it: th-cam.com/video/V70QQtl3TaI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LLxnz-k8ez7fcr5_
I explain it all in the video, but I don't use sterilization. Instead I use a simple hot water pasteurization in a bucket. It's easier and uses much less energy than sterilization. It works great for a wide range of gourmet and medicinal wood loving species.
just food for thought- I got my genetics from Mycelium Emporium , Moonlight Shitake. I dont smack my shitakes, and I hose them down 3 times a day to keep them a reddish brown. I also no longer let them rest between flushes. I use scissors for a clean harvest and keep hosing them down daily for the 2nd and 3rd flush. I love ya, small pet peeve of mine- its pronounced shi-ta-"KAY" not, shi-ta-"KEY".
Damn that sounds good. I think the individual fruit size is somewhat strain dependent. Try S75 if you haven't yet. That seemed to produce less but bigger fruits for me.
Don't call the pronunciation police on me. I'm just a yankee redneck that likes growing mushrooms. Never tried their moonlight strain, but I'm diggin the S5000.
a local mushroom farmer told me he had been waiting on his shiitake blocks to popcorn for months, in the dark, and it only happened when he took them to a sunlit room
Light seems to be the key, I never knew that until I this experiment. The other interesting thing is that even the surface that wasn't really popcorned produced nice fruits on the second flush.
No bran on this one. Shiitake doesn't need much supplementation, especially if you spawn heavy like I usually do. This 20 lb. block had 5 lbs. of grain spawn.
@@RenegadeMushrooms thanks! Just pulled my culture out of cold storage after a year and a half construction project. Perfect timing on the video! Mush love
@@danielboomers That's definitely on the warm side for most Shiitake strains. You can try talking to the people at Field & Forest Products in Wisconsin though. They have some warm weather Shiitake strains that may fruit at those temps. You're probably better off growing some tropical oyster strains at those temps, pinks and goldens love it warm.
@@RenegadeMushrooms thankx for ur reply. have u ever grown almond shroom? any idea if they like hot? climate in japan mostly not much suitable for indoor shroom growing.

I’m also gonna try and grow shiitake in a mono tub, thank you for the video!

These are definitely my favourites!
Wow! Great Vid!
Wow I need to try that strain. My shiitake genetics are a royal pain to get a second flush off of. Thanks for the video!
It's a nice strain I think you'll like it. Thanks for watching 👊
That shot of the spores were pretty cool! And a massive mushroom!

@@RenegadeMushrooms Yes. I've tried adding bleach. I've also tried adding hydrogen peroxide. Both work somewhat. But neither are perfect.
Wow!! Look at that second flush!!
Made an awesome recipe with them I will be sharing soon 🧡

Just pasteurized hardwood fuel pellets.

@@RenegadeMushrooms I missed it somehow. Thank you for the answer.
How do I grow small shitakes tho? I had one block where the 2nd flush was tons of TINY shitake. OH they were PERFECT in my bison and bean chili!

What temperature did you maintain during colonization and for fruiting?
65 to 67 F for this experiment.
Amazing! 😍
do you change the mico filters on your grain spawn jar lids everytime
No, they are good for 12 or 15 cycles before they need to be replaced. Then it's just peel off and stick a new one on.
Is this with your standard sub with no bran or is it just your normal light supplement wheat bran pasturization method?
No bran on this one. Shiitake doesn't need much supplementation, especially if you spawn heavy like I usually do. This 20 lb. block had 5 lbs. of grain spawn.
