Legit the hustle in NYC is scary and real. Some jacked dude walked up to my grandparents in a traffic light box jam just last month, cleaned their windshield despite their protests no, then threatened them for $10 (unpaid service????) until the light changed and my grandfather floored it. The SoundCloud rapper thing would 100% be a real issue.

The train thing is to avoid accidents. If a train goes too fast it can derail. The slow speed helps to avoid that. It also helps avoid accidents when people try to beat the train at railroad crossings. I live with train tracks all around me there are tons of speed limitations and rules the trains have to follow. It can be quite inconvenient for everyone involved.

Do you live under a rock or something? The law specified steam powered trains. In New York State trains sometimes go over crossings at 100-110 miles an hour. I’m sure there are many crossings where they also go anywhere between 30-80 miles per house. That law is nill

Also presumably to prevent children from being mulched by a train lol gotta remember this was probably passed at a time before cars existed/were common and the street was still regularly crossed by people outside of crosswalks (which probably weren’t a thing either-if you were to suggest to most people in not just New York but most of the world that they should only cross streets at pre-approved places which are mostly corners, they would have thought you were a crazy person). So they would literally have people ride along side the trains-on horses no less and as such were appropriately nicknamed 10th Avenue Cowboys-to make sure the right-of-way was clear of any pedestrians (or plebeians) so the train could proceed.

The steam train one is due to the steam cars that were used extensively in the city at the turn of the 20th century. They had a tendency to run over people, children especially. My grandpa had his foot run over by one when he was like 8 and lost all the toes on one foot. This is because they would be going too fast in the heavily pedestrianed streets of that era.

@@maxrichards3881 In short, it's a name for dumb laws. Mostly laws that were made for a very specific reason, but who are completly idiotic otherwise or laws that were made a long time ago, never got revoked, but are useless in modern times.
Here in europe they are usualy the later, laws from medieval times which never got officialy revoked and are thous technicly useable in court. The "Trial by combat" for example was never abandonded, so you could still demand it in court, which actualy happened in france a couple years ago. The court denied the request and banned the trial by combat from french law. Here in germany it's technicly still prohibited for women to drive a car with more than walking speed and only with male supervision. Our unlimited speed on the Autobshn is also just a thing, because back when the speed limits were set, they didn't expect that cars could go much faster than 100 km/h (~62mph).
