Wanted to return and drop a comment, I played this deck from gold to diamond. Lost a lot of games, probably a 50% win rate at best at first, but the more you learn it, the more you learn proper patterns. If I can take a budget version (more basic lands) to diamond, so can you!

I haven't been having fun with magic lately, all the lockdown decks just make it feel like you're watching solitaire. This deck has been super fun though. Not expensive to make ether which was nice. Thanks for all the content, Mike!
I Feel you man, been having a blast after crafting tthe Rat deck, and fine tuning my own really fun Taii Wakeen deck that could hold its own against mono black, mono red and most other decks of last weeks meta.. Spending A LOT of wildcards crafting mainly lands and a few key cards... Now its boros token control, Azorious control and Dimir control 85% of my games, and I cannot make another completely new archtype to fight against any of it for the next month. Lost 2k gems in standard event since sunday, because the meta is so bad for any of the decks I own. On top of this I think BLB draft is complete shite... It's is a really rough game to start as a new player, honestly don´t know what to do other than leave it for a few weeks and hope it changes or at least Limited introduces one of the fun formats again. Then I watch Mike and feel like playing, 2-3 games and I am done again..
Thanks a lot, Mike. This deck, specifically your Mk 1 version, has really helped me to enjoy Standard again. It's such a punisher and they joy it creates when you swing in with a couple of Rotcallers or when the Marshstalkers lunge from the graveyard to deliver a fatal blow cannot be described.
its insane if you think about it, karumonix wouldve rotated out before being playable if they didnt extend standard. its a cool list and i decided to try it out myself - went 6-1. goes hard and has a bunch of tools to compete in bo1 queue.
I lost a lot of games missing out key interactions as this is a deck that walks a fine line, but once you start learning the correct patterns, you start climbing
So at 40:04 you could have used mocking bird on the rat that lets you choose to give menace as well. You get the etb trigger. Love this deck. Ignore the haters 😂
I like the tutorial here. My thoughts on losing the race to rabbits is to put some counter spelling. Three Steps might be a perfect fit since it can copy rat AND counterspell.
I see you continue to shape the meta with your card selection and decks. Saw someone else playing rats and Goldfish went back to a classic of yours, Hollow Marauder 4/2 flyer discard and draw, Seth had it in a self-mill goyf list. Your decks do highlight how fragile aggro decks are, so a little luck and more skill than people give credit to aggro for, is needed. Will check out the video on a work break.
I have been playing around with a couple of shoreline looters instead of two Linkbreakers to help dig for key cards and fill the graveyard.. I am still undecided on if its better or not..
The Innkeeper's Talent into Vraska combo is lethal when she hits the board even at 5 mana. The way her mechanic works is that she has six counters and then has two removed if you pay with Phyrexian mana. Vraska enters, has 6 counters applied then doubles those with Innkeeper's talent, finally 2 counters are removed leaving her with 10. Innkeeper's talent also doubles the number of counters players receive, so when she ultimates, you get 18 poison counters not 9.
Just to show the complexity of the deck, (game 1 I think) you missed playing lilypad village instead of cavern, this would allow you to hold rat out up AND don’t forget you can surveil on OPPONENT’s turn! This is a huge help because you can bluff having harder removal, get a 1/1 and surveil the card you will draw next turn all on opponent’s end step
Mike loved this deck, idk how others were losing so bad, it is tricky but powerful and explosive, I did want to point out with the Innkeepers Talent/Vraska combo, you wont get a chance to kill her before she kills you, the last class of Innkeeper doubles the counters put on permanents and players, so you get 18 poison counters, its a true one shot kill, you have to destroy the enchantment or counter the planeswalker
Fun fact, you went against MTGGoldFish with this deck recently! It was a quick match you won but Seth put it in his video "One Last Job" deck around 18:20 if anyone wants to see Mike absolutely destroy with this deck!
I replaced the squirrel with two copies of Patchwork Banner and the deck slaps now. Just my two cents on what’s worked in Gold+. Thanks for the great deck!
Azure beastmaster rat works well in this deck if you squeeze in 3 & only 2 mana 1/3 with a very interesting ability! Plus it can’t be block by 2 more power.
Decided to give the rats another go (needed 5 wins to complete my daily 15) in ranked and went 5-0 (fought Bats, Rabbits,...) , Plat 1. I'm puzzled haha, your tips definitely helped, hats off MM !
@@MythicMichael Best part of playing this deck is picturing your opponent's face when his mice/rabbits/Phyrexians simply gets killed by a bunch of rats, supposedly "low" on the food chain haha xD
@@MythicMichael 10-2 today, only lost to the infamous Vraska one-shot kill and some UB Control, can't win them all ahaha! Also managed to fend off both Azorius and Boros control as well as quite a lof of rakdos/red mice/prowess decks.. your tips definitely helped as I was simply charging head on like a dumbass in those matchups, cheers \o/
I think getting multiples in your hand is really really bad, and it’s not the main win con in this version. So I like being able to get one (and we get it a good amount due to the Ratraxa look at 5 cards guy). But my take is 1 is the max you probably want optimally in this specific version (that is focused on getting down lots of small rats and mill).
I've never managed to get the Vrenn payoff. In game 4 I can't believe you didn't do the menace play via Mockingbird the turn after you missed lethal and even realized your mistake, but that's why it's a good and challengng deck. So many lines. I've also experimented with a couple of the 2 mana blue unblockable and card draw rats and they've been decent.
This deck rocks low ranks - at least bronze! I recently started playing mtg again after only playing during battle for zendikar before. I also started playing mtga. So im not a very experienced player. After playing some jump ins and picking rats there i had some of these cards and crafted some of the others. But still havevt gotten rat king relentless and pile on (some good cards in this deck) instead use worse cards. But even with that im 6-0 with the deck and 8 have played vs some decks with way higher cost. Currently trying to deside if I should get the last couple creatures and removal or spend my wild cards getting some better lands
Great to hear!!! If you think you’ll play this deck only for a while the creatures could be worth it. But those rats are really only used in this deck, so otherwise I’d pick the lands which are much more usable in a bunch of decks :)
@@MythicMichael update comming in hot! I ended up upgrading with a few creatures and 2 of the blue village. So still a worse version.. but! I just got to gold with 27/17 win loss. So I maintained about a 60% win rate through silver. (Dominated bronze) So the deck can for extra sure deliver in the low ranks. Im really enjoying it - so thanks alot for it!
Effectively a worse statted (and less versatile) Lord Skitter’s Butcher in many situations right? It can pop off in some races, but I think not good enough compared to the other banger cards in here. Worth some testing though!! :)
I was excited because of the 10/10. Im in diamond and i went like 2-10 with it lol I will say it's not the decks fault though. My account seems to have an abysmal going second rate and when I played it I got matched against some form of white control nearly every single game
@@MythicMichael it's been killing my sanity 😂 I even reached out to wotc because at one put I was thinking surely I'm shadowbanned after like 20 forced losses of just always going second and every game flooding or not hitting
I still loved this deck even though I lost,, I went 6-4. Some of the mistakes were my fault, most of them were because of the shuffler though. Hard to beat Mono red when you're flooded 🤷♀
Great game show Mike. I take my hat off to you. I would also like to explain one thing to you. You and your decks are too advanced for some people. That's why they don't do so well with them😂

Really curios, why arent you running 4 lilypad villages instead of 2+2 islands? You dont have any noncreature blue spells in your deck, so isnt the village strictly better?
The problem would be not being able to animate the creature land, but could definitely go to 3 if you want (I like one at least one basic island if they use Demolition field or whatever it’s called) :)
Hard disagree! Rat out kills mouse and cacophony and can be paired with death trigger from vermin. It’s also needed so you can make a rat instant speed on their end step to bring back graveyard rat. And it makes a rat against control! But play what works for ya :)
i destroyed a bunch of bunnies and red decks with my version of this, this deck is not hard to play, no idea what hes talking about, you loose when the shuffler fks with you and you win when hes not, ez as that.
I think this deck is particularly tricky, since doing a few things wrong like not holding back vs mono red to have enough untapped creatures for Pile On on their turn, or not milling right, or copying the wrong creatures, can probably just make this feel terrible haha. *So hopefully the tips in this video will help! :)

Not bad for sure! Only issue is I face so much mono red where that card is a bit rough, and the lifegain 1/3 squirrel shines there :)

@Mythic Mike is there a reason you are only running 1 Vern? I made a similar deck with 3 Verns is such a banger card I’m curious on why only 1?

it seems to me that difigure with BeastBinder is much better than rat out. Rat out cannot stop red aggro.

Bunch of decisions on what to prioritize and how to use the mill/etc correctly. I agree it smashes those decks though :)
