@pwndnoob4937 some people don't realize it makes the target illegal and fizzles the spell. A pro or vet player would know but a newer player who would participate in a pre release wouldn't know. That's not the sort of thing that comes up in constructed ever
When you are sacrificing multiple foods to Camellia like in game 1, you can let the trigger resolve, but then respond to the activated ability with another activation. That way all the squirrels are in play before you start putting counters on them and you get the maximum number of counters on all of them. You probably have to hold control on Arena though.
Absolutely unreal deck, Paul! I think this is the best deck I've seen yet in the format, and I watch a lot of Magic between yourself, LSV, and Numot. Congrats on a very well drafted, and played set of matches, 4-0 is what you deserved. I hope you win the $2K! I always love the energy and positivity you bring while you play, and I love your competitive spirit; you really do play at your best when there's something on the line.
If you have Camellia and a stash of food out to use with her, optimal play is to use her +1/+1 counter ability on the food, then resolve the 1/1 squirrel ability without resolving the +1/+1 ability. With the +1/+1 ability still on the stack, you use the +1/+1 ability again, again resolving the 1/1 squirrel ability while leaving the +1/+1 ability on the stack. We have two of the +1/+1 abilities on the stack and two squirrels in play, and we keep doing this until we run out of food. Now every squirrel we could get is on the battlefield, so we let the +1/+1 counter abilities resolve. This douses all of our squirrels in the maximum number of +1/+1 counters.
There’s actually a interesting combo with Camellia and Ygra where you can just keep activating Camellia using the squirrels she makes because they are also foods
1:25:00 I think the Treeguard is the play here. We can put Oppo to 1, force them to chump, and retain all of our creatures, which means their only out against our 4 lethal creatures is a wrath effect. Given this is the case, we'd rather have Ygra on the empty board rather than a 3/4 due to its size and ward.
Camelia gives your squirrels menace :) There were a few attacks in one of the games where they only had 1 blocker (a wall) and you were attacking with 2 squirrels and 1 other creature. The other creature didn't need to attack (it was getting blocked anyway); they had no way to block the squirrels.
Paul, you are an absolute beast. You’ve adapted to this format so quickly (even though this wasn’t your hardest draft lmao). Love the content and your analysis!
Awesome deck and a lot of great plays! It's always nice when you're able to draft a deck in your comfort zone. Also, I love how convincing you are in your explanation of the Arena Open structure. It would make sense to be that way, but I understand why they have done it differently... It's just confusing. (And for those unaware: to win $2k, you must win 4 matches draft 2, regardless of whether you had 3 or 4 wins draft one.) Thanks for sharing this run, Paul!
Yeah thanks for the clarification because I was most definitely wrong haha! I didn't realize the magic number is 8 and you can play up to 5 matches in the second draft.
I had a nuts squirrel deck with Carmellia and Ygra in it. I had 3 mentors, 3 forager, and 2 of the hybrid guy. Deck had 15 squirrels and Ygra it was awesome.
Best draft deck I’ve seen in years. I think the Bear elemental was the better choice in pack 2 since squirrels were not a huge part of the deck (mostly raccoon at that time).
match 3 opp i like how they are playinh a THREE color m ana base PLUS at least one blue village AND one white village. must be nice lol. Well, Paul has dethroned pretty much all the other limited content creators i have come across. as far as the amount of info i get per 10 min of content (or whatever metric you prefer), paul is blowing away all other other streamers. some of whom u get the feeling don't talk on purpose while they play cuz they are hoping you will sub to their stuff to get more info.
45:37 it's the optimal time to ping, they know they won't block, it's 99.9% that you will attack and there isn't a haste flash creature that you could cast. f8 value! luis would be proud
hey paul great video. Love watching these everyday (fellow mythic drafter, enjoy watching you and Nummy play draft). I think cruelclaw's heist is a great card tbh. It's slept on
Paul I think you're massively undervaluing Ruthless Negotiation. At worst it ends up in your bin from a cache grab and its a good mana sink late game that eats your opponents last card and draws a card. At its best you play it turn 1 and force your opponent take a mulligan then get to turn it into a mana sink again. It has a 58.2% game in hand win rate, card is cracked.
I'm not a huge fan. It's fine to play and cute with cache grab. Also I'm not calling anything cracked. I'm far too old. It's got a solid win rate in the appropriate decks as it's only played in roughly 60% of the decks that draft the card.
Drafted two Ygras with Bonebinds, Dragtooths, Cache Grab…whole deck was just mill til Bonebind and Ygra was in graveyard and stomp face. Smashed through everyone by turn 6-7 with a little ramp
You do a great job , not only drafting ,but explaining and showing the card your choosing . I don't know bloomburrow that well. I haven't played magic much the last 8 years or so, I started back in betta. Played a good amount in ice age, and then time spiral .. onslaught a little.... Anyway I would like to see you hover over the cards your talking about ( you do nearly every time) if you did that for 2 seconds every time, then I could read or pause the video to read the cards. Haha I sound like a Karen
1:15:45 I think you missed a line, where you download MTGA on your phone during your opponent's turn so you can continue the game there in case of power outage.
i have had so many of these type of frustrating games where my 9/8 mana base fails me. i keep a 2 lander with good spells and just need to find one more land (usually of my other color). What i've learned after 12 or so drafts in this format is i just need to prioritize some number of grottos/havens for color fixing even in my straight 2 color decks. i've even been playing that 2 mana 2/1 artifact creature that filters a mana color to avoid this, which i'm sure also makes my decks worse. not sure what the solution is.
What I don't understand, the way you are totally overlooking Druid of the Spade... It really shines in a food deck, 4/3 trample for 3 mana - it's a gift.
Solid work. Quick question for you. Why do you consistently play out a land as the last card in your hand? I am always surprised at how willing you are to just play a land rather than represent a trick.
It matters a lot a lot, in my opinion. It gives your opponent full information. And losing our 8th land to a discard spell seems almost trivial. Regardless, I've been ABSOLUTELY LOVING your content. I don't even play anymore, but still love watching your stuff. @@haumph

Won $1K in G/B/w. Would’ve been $2K if my opponent hadn’t ripped the flash bird rare in the last game with an empty board and empty hand when I was at one life and completely stabilized with a sizable board 😭
I strongly feel that this pick isn't close. Bakersbane Duo is a top 10 common in the set and a top 3 common in g/b specifically. It's absolutely crucial to play to the board early and this is the card that gets you to the late game while turning on your synergies in a 2 drop that creates food. If sylvan tutor puts the creature into my hand, that's a different story but it's simply card disadvantage. The existence of 2 cache grabs means that I have inevitability in finding my 2 bombs while never being down a card.
@@haumph I can agree with that to an extent but in a limited format I feel like any card that gets you closer to playing your bombs is always a great pickup even if it’s on top of your library.
30:30 It's a good thing you didn't play the land. Playing lands when not strictly needed and otherwise empty handed is a mistake. You can't make use of it and you give the opponent excess information for no gain. You're much more threatening to your opponent with a card in hand and mana up than with an empty hand and unusable mana being wasted. If you draw another one next turn, you still cannot play both and stand only to lose by playing both.
It's card disadvantage at sorcery speed. The card you know you will get has to be very good, not just in the abstract but in the game you are playing, and it has to affect the board quickly, to be worth such a disadvantage. And this tutor only gets threats, not most removal spells. Ygra is good but I understand passing the tutor.
@@alexmajor2366 For one mana, to put a card you know you want on top of your deck, is not as big of a disadvantage as you are making it out to be. I get that its not instant, but to take a decent common over getting your bomb on top of your deck for 1 mana is crazy to me. Especially when you end up getting multiple of the common you picked over it. To each their own I guess

That jund opponent must have been frustrated drawing 4 more lands than you in a format where half the cards are 2 for 1s or better. Down 6 cards isnt where you want to start the game.
It would be great with Ygra if it put the card into your hand (but then it wouldn't cost 1 mana I suppose). But putting it on top of your deck, you're 2-for-1ing yourself and you have to wait a turn before you get it.

In addition to being a busted squirrel maker and food eater, Camellia also has flavor text that gives your squirrels menace
LOL I had no idea
