Singapore Sling - Is this better than the Raffles Hotel version?!

- This version varies greatly to the original one said to be served at the Raffles Hotel with the key difference being the exclusion of pineapple juice!
This is replaced with a fair measure of soda water and allows the spirits and liqueurs to shine and not be hidden away in a wave of sweet juice.
I suggest to try both versions and let me know your favourite! :)
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 oz / 45 ml London dry gin
1/2 oz / 15 ml Herring cherry liqueur
1/4 oz / 7.5 ml Benedictine
3/4 oz / 22.5 ml lemon juice
1/4 oz / 7.5 ml grenadine
1 dash of Angostura bitters
1 dash of orange bitters
2 oz / 60 ml soda water

I have a soft spot for the pineapple version as when you take the time to balance it it’s still delicious; but yeah, this is probably “better”
I made this version last night since I finally picked up some Cherry Heering. So delicious!! Definitely in the top 10 I've made from your book!
Gotta try this one next time I go to a bar. Looks delicious
im singaporean and the raffles hotel verson isnt even all that to be honest, lookin forward to try this one out tho
Fruity + Refreshing!
I'd love to see a full video with tasting notes. I've thought about replacing the demerara syrup with grenadine in the SC version
I LOVE this drink. I usually make it with pineapple though. And I use way more angostura bitters :)
You’re really good 😊
Do you mix the two orange bitters in a 1:1 ratio in a separate bottle, Steve?
I really want to try this cocktail since I'm Southeast Asian on both of my parents' sides. I wonder what they think of this cocktail.
Nice
Recipes I've seen, and said were authentic, leaves out the grenadine...which does imbibe a flavoring I don't like. So it's more than just for coloring . And yes...take out the fizz .add the pineapple..but I guess you explained this is a diff version. I think another liq is missing. Maybe Countreu 🤔
Just went to the raffles and the long bar feels like going to a theme park. Get your drink, get the photo, get out. Fun, but not sure it was worth $38/cocktail and $28/pint of Heineken.
I have heard the Raffles hotel is not the place to get this drink anymore, they charge a lot for it now and free pour it instead of measuring it out nicely. The end result? A sweet mixture of juice with no discerning tasting notes
Where is the pineapple 🍍 juice
This is a different version… more details in the description 👍
No Pineapple and Orange Liqueur?
No, this is a different version. See the description 👌
Benedictine is a herbal orange liqueur.
not saying it’s a bad recipe, not saying you shouldn’t enjoy it or make it. I will say that whatever that is, it’s not a singapore sling, uve removed and then adjusted again the citrus of the drink whilst neglecting the acidic and bright complexity the pineapple and orange juice that are in the ACTUAL recipe. It’s also missing the triple sec that compliments the oj and takes the edge off of the darker heering flavours. It’s a riff on a sg sling, it may be delicious and still carry some of the principles of the original cocktail, but it’s not a singapore sling. That’s like calling a water lily an aviation.
It’s not the Singapore Sling as most know it today, you are correct.. but the original was most likely made with sparkling water (evolved from the gin sling / pink sling and was first named the Straits Sling). Grab a copy of David Wondrich’s Imbibe! if you want to read more about it.
What Steve didn't explain to the audience is that he actually made a "Straits Sling", which is the precursor cocktail to the 1915 Raffles Singapore Sling. Steve shouldn't be calling this a Singapore Sling when the drink he made has already existed under another name for 120 years. Pineapple juice is the essential ingredient for a Singapore sling... the essential difference between that and a Straits Sling. The foam that comes from shaking pineapple juice creates the signature look of a Singapore Sling.
The history on this is pretty hazy and I don't think anyone knows exactly what the original Singapore Sling was... yes, the one with pineapple juice is the most prevalent recipe and the one that is famously served at the Raffles... and yes, this particular recipe (with soda water instead of pineapple juice) also went by the name of a Straits Sling. Some of the very first printed references to a Singapore Sling didn't contain soda OR pineapple juice. If you have any reliable references that you can link to, I'd love to dive deeper into the history of this one.
So which is better in your opinion Steve?
I prefer this one.. 👍
Why would you add the soda water before straining? Straining it would just reduce the fizz.
I like to combine the ingredients rather than sit the soda on top.
But the smile and shake is missing in this clip😮
Why not add pineapple juice?
I had one in the long bar and it was honestly fairly bang average i had better ones in other places in singapore
Bro I feel like am in math class
If I don't have Benedictin in my bar can I use Jagermeister?
You could use it but it would make a very different drink.
@@StevetheBartender_ any other substitute?
@@luisfernandolopez9321 maybe Drambuie.. or an amaro... again, it will make a different drink but if you can't get Benedictine, it might be an option.
@@StevetheBartender_ thank you bro
Dam that’s a bit too much ingredients for me to remember all the time
There is olive not cherry my dear one ❤
Straits Sling not a Singapore Sling
Correct, this is a Straits Sling.
