Favorite cocktail of all time?

  • I get asked what my favorite cocktail is all the time and if I had to choose one, I think it’d have to be The Singapore Sling. And not only due to my preference for Gin. It’s a masterclass in balance and So faithfully encapsulates the spirit of what a tropical drink should be. All without a drop of rum.
The Singapore Sling was purportedly invented by a bartender named Ngiam Tong Boon at the Raffels Hotel in 1915. The inspiration for the cocktail came to him when he observed that while the men at his bar chose to drink Gin or Whiskey, the ladies were confined to drinking fruit drinks and teas. The Singapore Sling was his bid to create a drink especially for the ladies. Soon word spread far and wide making the drink more and more popular. Ngiam wanted to keep the recipe a secret so he locked it up in a safe and when he passed away, the bartenders were lucky enough to be able to retrieve the recipe with the help of his relatives. The safe and the recipe were then put on display in a glass case at Raffels as an ode to this most famous drink.

The production values have really come into their own now - this show now feels like a proper educational piece of entertainment rather than a series of tutorials. You guys are knocking it out of the park, and your mini-docs on Freepour are also stellar, I can't wait for what's next! (Oh yeah, the drink is also awesome, I'm glad to finally have a proper, go-to Singapore Sling recipe, so thank you)!

Your videos get better and better..! I had my first Singapore Sling at the Raffles in about '68, did not notice how they made it because I was shmoozing a lovely lady (hey, I was a Sailor!), but my first impression was less than positive, and I quickly reverted to my my usual scotch/water. It would be another year before a (lovelier) lady in Hong Kong converted me to gin/tonic for my breath quality. It's been a long journey but now I will drink anything, sadly...

I've tried so many variations of this drink because I've had this weird obsession over really wanting to like it despite being disappointed over and over, which I attribute to my love since childhood for the movie Cocktail. I've finally perfected my own version and here's the changes I would make to this recipe:
    1/2 oz Cointreau
    1/2 oz pineapple
    1/2 oz lemon
    1/2 oz lime
Dash each of orange and angostura bitters

The recipe at Raffles has a lot more pineapple juice in it which makes it more of a lady pleaser I guess.
Anyways I've tried quite a few of your recipes by now and noticed that a lot of them are on the tart/sour side. Especially if you compare them to the official IBA versions.
So I usually opt for a slightly less acidic version of your recipes but to each his own

Love you guys and the channel. I have a request. I've started making cocktails at home and I am ADDICTED to the whole shebang. My only issue is that most cocktails are alcohol heavy, as they should be. But I like drinking all night long and that's difficult to do when you get tanked after 4--5 drinks. I started just mixing more of the other ingredients and a 1oz pour instead of a 2oz. But then I'm not getting the drink the way it's intended, I'm getting all the other stuff and the booze is muted.
I guess I could use filtered water but again that would mute the whole drink. I could make smaller drinks but then I'm drinking them too fast and same problem, drunk too fast. Is there a way to add to the drinks without removing the flavor and without diluting it so much that the stars of the show are in the background? I'm guessing they do not make a half proof of most alcohols? Love to hear your feedback and suggestions or possibly a video for people who are alcoholics but don't want to get hammered by 7PM.

You need to drink Low Abv drinks. That’s the fix. Find low alcohol alternatives to your main spirit. Good video? I could make a whole channel out of that. There’s a whole industry built on it. May be fun to respec drinks like this one with low abv alternatives

i got to ask as a poor 20 something who loves tiki and tropical drinks, what are the possible substitutes for dom benadictine and cherry heering? im guessing cherry brandy liquer is fine for the heering but no idea on the DOM?

Probably no cheaper, but for what it's worth, Drambuie's the next nearest thing to Benedictine AFAIK. Very similar honey and herbal profile, same ABV, but with a Scotch base as opposed to neutral beet spirit.

@@aurum42 that is incredibly helpful thanks. where i live, the UK dom benedictine is hard to find and on amazon its expensive, drambuie is easy to get in comparison and i have some, helps alot

Y'know the thing about a Leandro, he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he shakes a drink, he doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya

Love this drink, but I do prefer it without the pineapple and a dash of soda.
