It’s definitely joining the ranks of Ray Milland and the bat in “The Lost Weekend.” Come to think of it, we need more Udo Kier singing “Der Adler” from “My Own Private Idaho.” It’s such a WTF moment, even with context.
The moment you guys started talking about realistic psychological horror I thought of the exact same thing as Craig - Nocturnal Animals. Even though they remove you from reality in that movie, putting the plot into a book, the roadside situation was so realistic and so terrifying that it gave me a permanent fear of traveling in rural areas with my wife and daughter. No joke, I watched this movie like 5 years ago, I still think about it constantly
Even in Natural Born Killers, as kaleidoscopically nihilistic as that is, it does far more to give a reason for Mickey and Mallory’s spree, why they’ve so wantonly embraced violence. It’s gleefully problematic, but it’s better than nothing. Regardless, great episode as always!
It's similar to NBK, but the backstory is the plot twist. Somewhat typical of flashback styles of plot movement. Kind of a double flip/reveal with the change from past to present tense and actions and morals put into perspective.
As someone that found these guys during a really rough time for myself I totally relate and empathize! Stay strong friend! The Basement community is here for you!❤
@@stevensedlak I lost my father to pancreatic cancer in 1997 and mom to lung cancer in 2014 so I relate to that struggle. Praying your mom manages to pull through!🙏🏾🥺❤️
So Im not the only person that predicted the agents were the killers!? The second they said “remember why we’re here” I figured out what was happening. It had 90s post Tarantino “watch how cool and edgy this is” wannabe noir energy. Its incredibly proud with how “clever” and nihilistic it was and its not clever at all.
I love Surveillance! Glad you two got to experience it as well. P.S. I also LOVED Tar! But, Everything Everywhere All At Once is still my favorite film of last year. Kind of expected since the directing duo's first film, Swiss Army Man, is my all time favorite movie.
EEAAO is hands down the best film of the year for me too. Through out awards season I have seen many people think it’s too weird to win at the Oscars or other guild awards and since then it’s been sweeping up wins. When it got PGA AND DGA I knew its a done deal regarding best picture. Its SAG sweep was so great to watch because they dedicated their ensemble actor win to the legendary James Hong! His speech was so good too!
i found the missing thread in this persian rug of an episode: you show on screen "The Menu - 2002" but you meant 2022 :P i LOVED this episode, missing threads and all
but have you seen the new Avatar movie? i saw it was nominated for production design and my first thought was i don't think i saw a single set that wasn't CGI
this is possibly the silliest episode this show has ever created! from the repetition of the soda can impression, to forgetting all about Nocturnal Animals starring basement legend Michael Shannon. it's just all so silly
Heres a question for you guys: What are some of your most unpopular film opinions and depending on how unpopular they are do you tend to keep them to yourselves or demand everyone within earshot reckon with the wisdom and truth you are laying down!? (Like I do!😜🤣) My most recent ones: Top Gun 1 is a terrible film and Top Gun Maverick is simply an ok film propped up by low expectations and its box office success. A real controversial one I have is The Usual Suspects twist ruins the film and Black Panther (my fav superhero) never should have been nominated for best picture.
Personally I hope Banshees of Inisherin wins because it's my favourite of the year, but I also loved Everything Everywhere so I wouldn't be disappointed with them winning. Best supporting actor is the hardest category for me this year to make a pick, because I really want both Barry Keoghan and Ke Huy Quan to win. Give them both an award!!
Here's the thing about "Police Story" - when I first saw it in London on Channel 4 in 1991, the scene where he's manning the phones at the provincial police station (with all of the Buster Keaton-esque business with the chair on wheels, the 5 phones at a time, tossing the pencils to himself, etc.) where he gets the call from the woman who has been raped while he's cooking his noodles was excised. When I saw it in a cinema in Seattle, that scene was in the print shown - and it hasn't been in any other American release (on VHS or DVD) until the Criterion Collection released it a few years ago. It's treated as a joke, because she says the person who raped her was her husband, and in a lot of countries (as in the US until shockingly recently) it is assumed you CANNOT be "raped" by your spouse, as it is assumed you would be sexually available to him at all times. I believe that is why the scene was taken out, both in GB and the US; even though Chan's stunt-work with the chair, the phones, the pencils, and the noodles is a lot of fun (thanks, Criterion Collection).
I know TÁR isn't a movie for everyone but I'm surprised and kinda sad that you've written it off. The character study is the strongest element but there is a story going on with her and you don't have to be a psychic to understand it. I strongly suggest you giving it another shot when you're in the right mood. I'm gonna go practice my soda can impression.
That bend vs break metaphor for twists is apropos, it’s one of the reasons I dislike The Usual Suspects, one of my more unpopular film opinions. I don’t like films that hinge on a twist that pretty much negates everything I saw previously. It breaks my immersion and feels like I wasted my time.
I agree with Craig about The Menu! It wasn't without its problems but overall it was a fun watch, and a much more effective "eat the rich" satire than Triangle of Sadness.
I’m on the EEAAO train all the way! I hope it’s gonna win Best Picture! And I loved Tàr but I don’t see any world where it has a chance to win! And I thought Banshees was good, not great. I’m surprised by your takes! It’s a very divisive year for the Oscars! No clear winner!
In my opinion I think The Fabelmans should win best picture this year. I also wish Brad Pitt and Eddie Redmayne were both nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Babylon and The Good Nurse but they didn’t.
While I agree with Craig about the film overall, I actually found the two cops frightening. What really hurt the film for me was the serial killer angle. Not only was the twist predictable, but they were too campy for me. They're supposed to be the apex predators of the film, so why make them less believable & less scary than the cops?
Looking back at all the Oscar related movies of 2022 there’s a theme of excess. Like every movie is about too much of something. Over eating, over reacting, over obsessing etc. so it’s like what movie was the most excessive: EEAAO
If you guys liked Police Story, you should watch Jackie Chan's Dragons Forever! It's even funnier and faster paced with Jackie Chan playing a morally reprehensible mob lawyer, Sammo Hung is an arms dealer, and Yuen Biao is a socialist cat burglar.
Someone that has (repeatedly) appeared in the films being watched in the basement. At the end of the year they add several people to the Welcome to the Basement Hall of Fame.
Thank you for the Tar discussion at the beginning of this ep! I totally agree with you both! I am the only one I know that had the same opinion so thank you for letting me know I’m not alone
There's a reason Jennifer Lynch hasn't directed a movie in over a decade. Some sporadic work (usually 1 to 2 episodes per series) on dozens of shows. Like her father, but less talented. Though, Lynch himself is extremely over rated. A director that makes movies for himself, not his audience.
I don't know why, but I have the most peculiar suspicion that we will see Bill Pullman imitating a can of soda in future episodes as well.
Oh I really hope so
It’s definitely joining the ranks of Ray Milland and the bat in “The Lost Weekend.”

Besides Nocturnal Animals, Surveillance reminded me of John Cusack's bleak black comedy The Ice Harvest (2005)
Why do I get the feeling we'll be seeing more of that clip of the soda bottle impression
Can’t wait! Lol
I'm getting strong Tough Guys Don't Dance energy off this film...
“SHE GOT NOWOOOMB!!” LMAO!

I love it when Matt falls in love with a scene, first it was the wine pig then it was Pullman Soda.

I cannot believe you guys picked this movie. It’s one of my guilty pleasures.
I really enjoyed Tár (after the first 30 minutes), just watching Cate Blanchette walking around doing stuff.
I finally did it! After years of trying to guess what Ernesto is going to say at the end, I guessed it! Matt kind of made it easy, but I'll take it

"Police Story" is the only movie I've ever seen where the action hero punches a woman in the face, and the audience laughs.
