I put a turbo on mine back in 05'. Couldn't believe how much it woke it up. 355 hp.& 700 lbft.at the rear wheels. Intercooler and meth kit go along way too.
It was a Garrett. Can't remember the number but it was making33 pounds of boost. I turned the fuel screw up nine flats to around 300 pounds an hour. The air to air was a gift from a friend. The meth kit helps with egt.
id check your glowplugs and timing for better performance and easier starting that knock makes me cringe sounds like it needs to be advanced a few degrees..nice truck and keep tinkering!
obviously a t win setup would be something to see to prove it can be done on a idi. what size pump you have on it? maybe biggest pump you can get with stg 1's, or the craziest of all INLINE PUMP! 😜
Smoky Bones ok after I get it dyno'd then ill get another turbo in the mix...stock pump maxxed out right now. idk if you know but I had a inline pump that I sold to my buddy Justin ( @ racinndrummin ) he will be completing the inline pump project in the future
Had that same knocking in mine. Low compression on piston #7 pulled the motor out and sent it to R&D for rebuilding. Justin said my piston had a massive crack down the center. I knew it was bad. Looking forward to getting the engine back.

(Love any 87-91 aero cube body because I have one) But 3 suggestions. 1) put a manual trans steering column in it 2) put the manual trans block off plate in the instrument cluster where your PRND21 is now 3) Eliminate the OD switch on the dash by putting in the dash part from a truck with an AOD, C6, or manual trans (The latter will give you a neat cubby hole to boot)
I’m pretty sure that overdrive switch is for a gear vendors unit, the c6’s were non overdrive and e4od’s were electronically controlled by the computer
My idi made less power than my 460 and both got 10 mpg . I always wanted a turbo! But guys told me it would blow the heads off!! How many mpg are you getting with it turboed?
Because it has no power none 0 to 50 in 5 minutes that's why they last other then they eat glow plugs and batterys and starter because there very hard to start.

My 89 in is basically stock is still running fair with a utility bed . The return tees and hose get replaced from time to time prone to drips the main fuel filter can shut you down . And is a messy job . Usually if it starts not wanting to start checking the glow plugs. Find one open . Makes a big difference.
Hey replace that tack sensor it'll get rid of that puffing sound from your intake check your oil pressure sensor on the dash it's probably bottomed out past low that's what mine was doing it goes away after it warms up but that's the issue, that sensor I have a 92 F250 with banks sidewinder turbo
25psi? Fucking Christ. The 18 wheeler I drive which has a 15liter engine puts out 33psi only during emergency pulls until the waste gate opens and de rates it down to 28psi so it wont burn apart.. That's insane for that size engine.

I put diesel in my fucking indoor non vented kerosene heater cause its safe and is now the same thing as K1. TwisTed Taipan yah low compression and aftermarket everything. adding a turbo to a non turbo motor that runs high compression and running 25 psi is insane. 15-20psi should be max on a high compression engine

Old Standadyne pump IDI 7.3. Could have a BW S485 compounded with you holset and it wouldn't matter if it made 100 psi. No extra fuel. No extra power. Good for burning waste oil. Otherwise a turd.
A buddy's dad had an 86 when I was growing up...yea it was slow. Funny thing though, he would tow a big airstream camper behind it and it wasn't really much slower.

I've seen guys run em till it's a no start and you find like 4-5 bad glow plugs. 😂 If it's a glow plug it'll start hittin after it gets a little compression heat goin. Even a crappy injector will light off usually eventually also.
That's actually injector knock. They crack loud rather than a knock . If he had a rod knock he would not have made it to the end of the street and it's still on the road today
Not sure if any of these ways is how he did it but one way I know to more reliably hold more boost would be to lower the compression ratio. Lower compression ratio can be achieved a number of ways such as dishing out the pistons more, larger pre-combustion chamber volumes and/or orifices and thicker gaskets. Cam and timing can have an affect on what kind of boost diesel heads can handle. Id love to know what his build consists of. I hope arp studs were involved. O-ring or fire ringing the heads also helps hold that boost in. Another thing people dont consider also for safe reliable boost is getting drive line and intake pressure under boost as close to 1:1 ratio as possible. Im wondering what things hes done to the fuel if anything else other than turning her up.
if you check out heath diesel, he actually recommends upping the static CR on IDI engines to help larger fuel/air charges get started in the prechamber
Turbocharging one of those early 7.3 IDI's is never a good idea. especially at 25psi that motor wont last 50,000 miles. A 93 or 94 is a different story, but your 91, I would tread carefully or start saving up for a complete rebuild
LMAO these engines hold boost all day long. It's all bullshit about them not holding up . Got buddies with over 100k on theirs with 18 to 25 psi no issues.they all run arps that's it

i understand a different turbo and lots more fuel then stock is where his increase in boost is from. but by my experience ive never seen those idi motors hold that much power without blowing up.
My 90 is still running fine, 340k on the clock with a banks turbo setup and a 5 speed. Running 12psi on stock injectors, just have the pump turned up 2 flats and an egt gauge. Daily driven about 120 miles round trip monday-friday for about 5 years now. Zero issues

It was a 7.3(445idi) A185 on the passenger side valve cover. I remember changing the pump timing too. Can't remember how many degrees advanced.

Nice old idi. Mine's a 93 aod. 135k on the clock. Sometimes wish I'd have bought the 89 5spd instead but it had 257k on the clock.
Amazing how the 7.3 idi Outlast everything literally nuke proof . With such large numbers of trucks on the road there is no comparison to durability .

cummins b series runs 25 stock, pretty normal to see them 35-45psi after a little tuning depending on engine and turbo variant

25 psi is nothing. I saw a video of a Cummins running 9.6s in the 1/4 mile with over 100psi of boost.

The 7.3 idi had a factory turbo option toward the end of its run, like 1.5 years iirc.
It’s a Holset Turbo. Not the stock Garrett. But if you have the stock Garrett, you can adjust the wastegate to gain boost

The front fuel tank gauge was crap for those trucks. You could have a full tank of fuel and it wouldn’t tell ya (either broken or sticky).
