This is essentially a remaster of my original Fallout 4 review from a couple years ago. My sound, voice and video quality has improved much since I made it and I wanted to do this review justice. So older viewers may recognise how similar the script is to the old version, but to new viewers, welcome! 🍦
i have to say that one of starfields biggest criticism was the non voiced protagonist, people hated this aspect, but the fans of bethesda games demanded this because of what FO4 offered, so which is it? voiced protagonist or no voice, because it seems some people can't make their decision on this, they either want it or not. how about this, how about bethesda does both options in their games, just make it a feature that the player has a choice to turn on or off,, and just leave it as simple as that.
Some of my favorite memories of vanilla FO4 was sitting in my living room with all the lights off late at night, exploring the ruins and running from Yao Guai and Deathclaws, battling roving bands of Gunners and Raiders... sure it has flaws but I always loved that immersion into a post apocalypse wasteland. Now with Wabbajack lists and the like, there's so many new and better ways to enjoy that core experience.
That was a very good and insightful explanation for why the story felt "off", right from the start. Either commit to a specific protagonist or don't. Hadn't been able to put my finger on this before.
Pretty much the most objective and fair review of this game. I've played it a few times but haven't in a long time. Recently been trying the wabbajack lists but NV still draws me back as my favorite of the games though I think 3 is really good. Rather just play the TTW version and do both ;p At 20:05 what ENB or Reshade is that? or is it something else. Cheers and thanks for the video.
2:10 That's very much how I play it too. With an alternate start mod, I decide what type of character I want to be, where I came from, why I'm here and what my short and long term goals will be and then I go into the game. The game stats are often the enemy and I go out of my way to avoid perks that make me stronger. I also use a mod to give no XP from building or kills. I want the game to stay hard for longer, to have thrilling fights, even to die lots of times when I'm L40 or higher because otherwise this game gets boring when you can kill everything in one shot and you brush off bullets and explosions. No other game gives me this much freedom to play it how I like (with mods) and in that sense it truly is the best role playing game I own. Looking only at the game itself, it might not be a "pure" RPG but it provides the structure for one, so with mods and imagination it becomes a world you can immerse yourself in for a very long time. I've played it for 2,500 hours.
I personally really give fallout 4 a hard time, but this game came out during my freshman year of college. Great memories of getting hammered and wandering around in game with a group of friends watching or watching a pal play. Great times, and awesome review.
It is a weird one. People like to crap on it for various reasons, but I think it was the Skyrim to your Morrowind (or in my case, Oblivion). Its still a good game, but a lot was changed that FO fans really liked (convo options, RP, story line - MINUS Far Harbour). Retrospectively, I like FO4, liked FO3 and love FNV. What I think also didn't help with FO4 in the months after release is that this was the start of Todd Howard's obfuscation of the truth and the start of what Bethesda is known for now - the mod community will fix it and to quote a legendary saying 'I[t] feels thin... stretched. Like butter scraped over too much bread'
hey can you teach me how to do that FPS unlock and that Mouse acceleration thing ? both of which are my problems. the VSYNC i dont see it in the GeForce Experience only in Control panel but im using GE because i can't get the right settings for my potato PC. and the TREES in the world at the beginning looks BLURRY and that is even when using full AA TXAA.
Excellent review, really comprehensive, was a great watch. I hope you do more in the future. I'm torn about this game, the gameplay loop and world design are great but the voiced protagonist, the story and writing I consider much inferior to New Vegas, so it feels bad in comparison. Still, I've played over 500 hours so I guess the good parts outweigh the bad in my book.
Fallout 4 is a good game, not the goodest, but very good. It's embarrassing to think FO fans really hated on FO4 to the extent of saying it's not a true Fallout game, Bethesda never understood FO etc.
It was a good game on it's own terms, just not as good as FO3 or NV. I enjoy it as I like looter shooters like Borderlands and I actually enjoyed the settlements. However, this game has the worst npc's of any Bethesda game and the main story is a laughable joke as far as the "where's my son" part of it is concerned.
@@j85grim4 Agree that it's not as good, however, like 4 games in total are as good on their own terms as FNV is, so I don't see how that could justify any hate from a reasonable adult. F4 is definitely more deep than Borderlands, and until F5 comes out we can't know if Bethesda intends on sticking with this casualization or if they will walk back some (hopefully all) of those decisions.
i get you can't make everyone happy but why cant we have good combat and good roleplaying. i dont wanna completely write off bethseda but if they put more effort into it fallout 5 could be something that brings the fans together
I like Fallout 4 but I didn't like the story and there was too many defend the Settlement missions. Also I don't like how all of the storage boxes were disconnected. The graphics/world and gameplay is really good in FO4. I'm currently playing through Begin Again.
I boycotted this game all this time and just started playing for the first time. It most definitely is an insult to the series. I specifically avoided the stupid dog because im not interested in it in the slightest only for it to spawn on my face and be forced upon me during the awful narrative i get railroaded down. All my agency has been deleted as every NPC that annoyed the shit out of me was essential and unkillable. There are doors i cant open even with master lockpick because nick is scripted and essential and needs to be there to open it for you. Fallout was a hardcore RPG experience that focused heavily on player choice. Fallout 4 is pretty much the opposite of that philosophy. The core gameplay has been extremley dumbed down in an attempt to grab the attention of people who didnt have the attention span for the actual games. In an era where numbers are too hard and reading takes too long, a great series is removed from its identity and reduced to a shallow looter shooter experience that forgoes the original mantras for fancy visuals and a shallow gameplay loop. It is now designed to cater to cod boys and fortnite kids as any sort of complexity has been removed so that they dont get overwhelmed. This game could lose the fallout title and theme and it literally wouldnt be hurt in the slightest. Fallout didnt need to be another generic open world looter shooter, you guys already have plenty of those. You know what we dont have plenty of? Hardcore rpgs based on a nuclear apocalypse.
I like the gameplay more or less. I dont like the design choices of weapons, i dont enjoy the look of the game - just kind of a blurry mess at times. I hate the story, i feel like they could just remove it and let us roam around and you wouldnt be able to tell. And the voiced protaganist wouldnt be so bad if you had voice options or a slider to change pitch and what not. Id say vanilla fo4 is 6-7 out of 10 for me. With mods, maybe 8 or 9. With ALOT of mods a 10 😂. But its not an RPG. Its an action game with rpg elements. I feel like nothing i do in the game actually matters. But its just a fun, casual game for me.
Fallout 4 is a good game. i think its bad when you compare it to fallout new vegas, the witcher, morrowind, and other RPGs like that, and Fallout 4 to me feels more like an exploration game with RPG elements. But in that regard, it is decent and very immersive. the immersion and ease it takes to get lost in the game is fallout 4'a strongsuit, aside from modibility. the character costomization is the best ive seen (talking sbout the facial and body skulpting), they have pretty good clothing options, and there is good voice acting. now, of course, the dialogue system, the downtown city's artstyle, the radiant quests, and the weapon animations are terrible. i still dont get why they made their AK and bolt action rifle left handed when the chinese AR and hunting rifle in fallout 3 was right handed. and i hate that the player character is voiced. fallout 4 is good game, but a bad fallout game
Its extremely boring :( and hard. Worse than 76 . In my opinion all fallouts are boring and grindy, and they throw you into a world and tell you how to do nothing
I feel like the problem with the voiced protagonists with established backgrounds is not the fact that they're voiced or that they have an established background; but that they have zero characterization and that their backgrounds are barely explored in the game, it just creates an annoying obstacle in roleplay without giving you much of anything in return.

Have you tried the new update? Everyone says it breaks mods and adds nothing. Classic Bethesda.

Are you able to do this on the other fallout games please?
could you do a review of the fallout anomaly modpack? im split between downloaded either that or magnus opus

to be honest, main quests in Beth games have always been kinda MEH :)
