I love how respectful Onsa is of the mink. And that was a fascinating fact about the mink needing water nearby when hunting in higher temperatures! I love learning from you.
What you say is true, mustelids (mink & other 'weasels') and canids (dogs) belong to the caniform lineage of Carnivora (as do bears & oddly enough, seals and sea lions.) Civets/genets, mongooses, hyenas and cats belong to the sister lineage of feliform Carnivorans. And of course the rats belong to that great - that is, huge in number - lineage of placental mammals called the rodents, specifically the murid lineage (i.e. mouse-like rodents.) Interestingly enough, we humans and our primate cousins are closer kin on the great family tree to the rodents than to many other mammal lines, including the aforementioned Carnivorans, but also the many four-legged herbivores like deer, rhinos, cattle. That said, I'm not sure to what degree this matters to a hunting dog. Dogs rely on smell to track down quarry, but in the closing moments of an attack likely rely only (or mostly) on their sight to pinpoint the animals location. No doubt a mustelid smells quite a bit different than a rat, being known for their very strong scent glands.
Uh I think the dog has eyes, nose and a brain. Also the dog probably spent years bonding with the mink to know the difference between his friend and a rat.

Abdallah Higazy I don’t mind my cat eating the rats he catches I’ll even buy him the frozen ones from the pet stores when he has an off day he just can’t get enough of them. Your welcome.
scuffed malone impossible. This man's livelihood depends on the ability of the mink to be agile and lightning fast. You can bet your life that the mink gets plenty of exercise daily! Further, did you see how he treats that mink? He obviously cares very much about it's welfare! Finally the mink doesn't need to be free, it just needs to be happy.

Great job! You saved minks from getting killed over their fur and made good use of them as pest control. Too bad there will probably be a narrow minded snowflake that will find fault in what you are doing.

@@kaiverse9568 Yeah. Decades ago, in the western world, owning & wearing a mink coat showed off one's wealth better than many things. I'm surprised it still goes on, but happy to see they are being kept as pets and cared for too.
We hardly give animals the credit they deserve when it comes to the smarts department. Joseph has trained the animals so well, he's a real Dr. Doolittle who talks to the animals.
Being someone who LOVES rats, and thinks they are some of the best pets ever.... They are also colossal pests and massive inconveniences to property and storage when left unchecked, and I LOVE that you're so good to the minks.
our kids had some great rats ,,, sooo inteligent but also a different breed from the wild black variety who will eat each other , we shoot with air rifles and soon as a rats down hes still warm n twitching the others are nibbling away, to see this i believe its better than any other means as its more natural too. i detest poisons
I LOVE RATS!! I had a hooded rat in my early 20's. He was so sweet, smart, and fun. I miss him so much. I won't have another one because I can't take the heartbreak of them not living more than a few years. I had a big rat pest problem here the past few months. I ordered a humane live trap and have caught, and released 4 so far. I take them to the landfill where they have lots of food and shelter. I try to drop them all in the same area so they can find each other again. I only have the one trap so had to do it one at a time. They were no where as big as these guys were. They were really cute too. If I didn't have dogs, cats, and kids I would have made one of them my pet. It was very docile. It did not want to leave the cage. It kept climbing back up to the back of the cage as I held it upside down to try and get it to fall out of the opening. It was so cute. I felt so bad. At least they have a chance to live out their lives without fear of someone snapping their necks in those kill traps.
I also prefer it if it is more natural. I won't kill them if I can help it, and try to not let my dogs get them if it can be helped. If they do have to die I would rather it be by my dogs than by poison or death traps. I use live traps to catch and release them.
@Peter sturm What makes you think you know better? You've got some high horse buddy. The people who name call are in actuality through some subconscious mechanism describing themselves--rooted in low self-esteem.

Dogs and minks are actually quite closely related, while cats are related to civets and mongooses. Rodents are their own game.
What you say is true, mustelids (mink & other 'weasels') and canids (dogs) belong to the caniform lineage of Carnivora (as do bears & oddly enough, seals and sea lions.)
Civets/genets, mongooses, hyenas and cats belong to the sister lineage of feliform Carnivorans.
And of course the rats belong to that great - that is, huge in number - lineage of placental mammals called the rodents, specifically the murid lineage (i.e. mouse-like rodents.)
Interestingly enough, we humans and our primate cousins are closer kin on the great family tree to the rodents than to many other mammal lines, including the aforementioned Carnivorans, but also the many four-legged herbivores like deer, rhinos, cattle.
Also the dog probably spent years bonding with the mink to know the difference between his friend and a rat.
suffolk6311 im talking about accidentally biting the mink you dipshit.
I would like to commend you on what you do. No poison. Just nature taking care of nature.

Abdallah Higazy . . . Those who disliked are those who prefer chemicals and poisons to kill pests. I mean honestly, this video was cool. Getting rid of pests the natural way
@@randsa2453 exactly thumbs for both comments!!!
Abdallah Higazy the ones that are disliking the video don’t like to see the rats being attacked and killed. I for one don’t really care about the rats cause I have a cat that loves them.
alieninvaider I hope you don't forget that your cats are born predators. Feed them meat. Cat "food" can end up giving them diabetes. I appreciate your response. Thank you.
Abdallah Higazy I don’t mind my cat eating the rats he catches I’ll even buy him the frozen ones from the pet stores when he has an off day he just can’t get enough of them. Your welcome.
I am always amazed by how you have your animals trained to work as one unit instead of several different beast.
I love how Abby sat freely and happily eating in her transport vehicle after a hard day's work.
Texas Jack yeah, me too.
Texas Jack yeah noe she gets to sit in a cage for another month smh.... she still not free
scuffed malone impossible.

Natural way of dealing with pests! Good for the mink, the dog, and the environment!👍😊
How are the rats pests if they're not pestering him? He has to go find them.
Charlotte B Good point. It always ends in hurt feelings anytime a mink and a dog breed.
This I approve but what happens to the dead rats
They're used as mink food, most likely ground up.
Kinda for the environment
Being English, ( no one, hunts with Mink here ) am jaw dropped, that Joseph has made such a wildly ferocious animal, so manageable. Am utterly fascinated and shall be purchasing Josephs book Minkery, as soon as can muster the funds. The shipping costs are three and a half times the cost of the Black & White copy of the book. Take my hat off, to such wonderful skill and knowledge. If was living in the USA, would seek this man out to hunt with him.
That wood and scrap pile behind that dude's shed is an invitation for rats - looks like a rat condo and they will move back in, guaranteed.
@granitestater1029 raw sweet potatoes really? Does it work with mice?

@@MeltingOnYourMind not Yams, Sweet potatoes. I never knew it is poisonous to rats, we have lots of those here in Africa. Exactly what a respectful, smart dog, no doubt I'm sure he did research on that breed too. Wish I knew what kind of breed the dog is, is it a greyhound?
I wouldn't step on anything that could race up my leg and grab me by the throat either;-)
Paulette looks like a german shorthair pointer.
