Hey Justin! Hope y’all are well in 2024! I’m reading Geddys book and when he talked about By-Tor, I had to come back and listen to your reaction! He explains how he does the “fight scene”! Hopefully I’ll get to tour more of your reactions again, as the book goes on!! I know you got it, I hope you’re having time to enjoy the read!! Send my best to Camilla, Hank and Ho Kitty! As a young man my first concert ever was Rush during the Hemisphere's tour. I was hooked. I saw several shows through the years, including the last album tour for Clockwork Angels. I loved Fly By Night because it was the first album with Neil Peart, and his lyrical input was immediately transforming for the band. His passing was one of the saddest days of my adult life, not just because of the music, but the tragedies he endured in his personal life and his ability to rise above those and continue on.

Alex is so good using the volume swells with the pedals to create that effect. Plus gorgeous chords in that second part. Also Neil shines as usual. You ever take note every fill is never the same as in duplicated. Always unique.

One of my favorite guitar solos of all time is in By-Tor etc... that slow blues Grove Alex solos over and the solo is just next worldly. Only two people have moved me with a guitar Alex and Dave Gilmore...and this solo just gets turned to 11 when it hits...

This was a staple of their live shows for years to come as they would rambunctiously act out the battle scene between "Prince By Tor( Getty). And "The Snowdog" (Alex.) Very 70s and all-encompassing in its grandeur And overt silliness. But excess was the name of the game and with the limited funds and what they had to work with they try their best to give a big show to Their audience that was growing with them. "Fly By Night" is something of a Benchmark and that it did yield significant radio play for them both in Canada and abroad, but the real signature here is the grounding of them as a progressive unit that was growing confidence to be able to step outside of the Zeppelin mold. The next album after this "Caress of Steel" while still a significant marker in their progression was a commercial setback and you could say that it's lackluster sales and the threat of being dropped by the record label is what inspired the fire to make or break with their album follow-up 2112. I think it's fascinating that you're doing this from the ground up... Track-by-track... Album by album. It's going to be an interesting ride. Cheers.

I have watched a lot of people react to Rush on TH-cam and it always makes me smile. I truly love watching people discover this great band. Some of your comments have been repeated many times by others. What did I just listen to? I need to listen to that again. That song was 9 minutes and what just happened? I need to start taking notes because I can’t remember my thoughts during the song. All of it makes me smile. Imagine how I felt in the 70’s when we would pile in our vehicle and blast this stuff on 8 track bring so proud that they are also Canadian. It was a big deal then and they are still a big deal now. Thanks for doing these reactions. I am really enjoying your take on the music. Congratulations on your Rush journey!!

So the story goes that someone Rush knew (maybe their manager?) had two dogs. One was a big white husky (a "snowdog") and the other one kept nipping at people. He was the "biter" (By-Tor). So that's the origin of this imaginary battle and the two foes. Also, this was their first foray into "cinematic" writing where the lyrics just kind of provide the framework for a musical story. The music is like the "soundtrack" to the lyrics/story. Jacob's Ladder on Permanent Waves is similar where the lyrics just provide a "feel" to write a musical story around.
In the song, Alex takes the character of Snowdog and Geddy is By-Tor. So for the battle part each users their instruments to create the sounds each of the characters would make.
Finally, while By-Tor is the bad guy in this song, he is the good guy on a song on Caress of Steel. I guess he had a change of heart.

By-tor's growl was Geddy on the bass. Quote from Geddy: "I put my Fender bass through a fuzztone -I can't remember what kind-and then into the board. It was distorted all to ****, so we added phasing, and ultimately put in everything but the kitchen sink. I had all that sound going through a volume pedal, so every time the monster was supposed to growl, I would lean on the volume pedal." It's great you're doing the albums chronologically. You certainly get the importance of this song in their development. When compared to their other long-form epic songs, this one is a little rough around the edges in terms of overall composition, but an important first step.

Don't know if you are planning to cover the live albums, but in the extended version of this song on All The World's A Stage, Alex takes the solo to another level. You'd swear he was using a violin bow like Jimmy Page, but he's doing it all using just his hands and a couple of effects pedals. It's beautiful and mesmerising.

    Again, spot on.
What always amazed me about Rush (still does, probably always will) is how they transport you, instrumentally, to another place or time. Then, the instrumentation also tells the story. You will see this in many songs. The lyrics are great, and often a mouthful for Geddy, but the instruments tell the story and you can follow along even without lyrics.
Rush's manager at the time, Ray Daniels, owned two dogs. The German Shepherd was always biting guests and the other dog was white as snow. Hence the inspiration behind the names of the two main characters of the song.

By-Tor and the Snow Dog Live in Rio is great.

A good story about this song (I don't know if it's true) but, it is written that an associate of the band owned two dogs, one of which was kind of a biter (that would be By Tor), so naturally they wrote song about an epic battle between them.

By-Tor (Rhymes with DOOR) as many have said was the tip of the spear of the more adventurous Rush. That strange noise you heard was supposed to be growling. The fierce battle between By-Tor and the Snowdog. I've always thought it was bit loud because the groove underneath is so killer. Great song for sure...

They needed someone who had the mind for stories and narratives and Neil was certainly that. :) I love this whole song just because it is so different from anything else you'd ever hear on the radio at that time and also they all have fun and do interesting music. The slow part through the drums and into the guitar solo is tops for me. Atmospherics. It would be interesting to hear how they came up with that.

There is a phaser, likely a Maestro, a tape delay, Roland I believe, prob. a volume pedal for the swells. He wasn't using distortion pedals at that time. Just Marshall and 335 goodness. The most famous song of them all using this effect was by Grand Funk and the song is the "Loco Motion". If i remember correctly, Todd Rundgren was the guitarist on that song. Also, the very very best of the majority of the live songs like Btyor, Fly by night, 2112. Something for nothing, Anthem, Bastile Day are performed on "All the world's a stage or ATWAS for short. The growling effect on ATWAS is over the top! Day I say Alex goes ballistic on that live album! It's easily Rush's heaviest metal album or them all!

A large portion By-Tor came from extended versions of Working Man when played live in the early shows. You can hear it on the Bootlegs "The Fifth Order of Angels" also called "ABC1974" (the later is even available on vinyl) if you are interested. It's also interesting as Neil had only been with the band for roughly a month when the bootleg was recorded. Cool reaction, thanks!

I can't wait to see you listen to the live version of this on "All the World's a Stage". That atmospheric section and instrumental section after the first jam? Alex picked up quite a few more tricks from Caress of Steel and 2112, and his atmospheric effects are greatly enhanced and filled out (the song actually runs a lot longer on the live album). Geddy tweaked and enhanced the bass melody in the instrumental section, and it's bold and gritty and driving and sick! They used their experience to make the song better. Actually, that's true for all of the songs on that album.

To me it has always sounded like an overdubbed bass string rake. A technique Alex made generous use of, although my guess is it was created by Geddy.

The 1980 Alex Lifeson cover issue of Guitar Player there is also an interview with Geddy. He explains how he got the By-Tor battle tone. Yes it is bass.

This is one of my favorite Rush songs, and definitely one my top two picks out of their first 4 albums. The guys must have been around 22-23 years old when they recorded this, and I love the raw aggressive sound they get (and in all of the live recordings I've heard of it). While it might not be one of the band's masterpieces compared to their later work, I still think it holds up as a great example of early prog-metal and I still enjoy listening to it without reservation.

This was where they started to push the boundaries. They would continue in that direction on the following album Caress of Steel. While that album has it's flaws, there's something endearing about it. I feel the same way about this song. It's not perfect and they would do far better, but it is still really cool to see where the seeds where planted.

I know you said you're going to do the albums in order. I hope you're not going to skip the live ones along the way. All The World's A Stage is their first live effort with tracks from their first four records. Something tells me you're going to have a different take on a bunch of the earlier tunes you thought were somewhat throw aways. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Rush was an amazing live band and those early tunes sound much better in the live setting. Cheers!

It took until 2013 for Rush to be inducted into the R&R Hall....."The group has been awarded 24 gold, 14 platinum and 3 multi-platinum albums. That ranks them fifth - behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith - on the all-time list for most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band." Yep J., this is where Rush evolves in a progressive tour de force! Remember the forces at play during that period in terms of the music industry. Love your analyses!

3 guys that got along very well, left their respective egos at the door, then proceeded to experiment and evolve together to form a genius band for the ages. The stars must have been aligned for Neil to join this band. He wanted to write and play progressive. Geddy and Alex wanted to get more progressive and didn't care to write lyrics. To say they found their guy is an understatement. Enough is said about Neil being one the greatest drummers, but his lyric writing is profound, relatable and seemingly timeless. Especially his late 70's onward.

Hey Justin - question: Why does Super Thanks show up on some of your videos, but not on others? I don't know how that works. As I click through your videos, some videos, it shows up -- but most videos, it doesn't. There are usually certain videos where I want to go: Yeah! Awesome Reaction! Super Thanks! But if it's not available on THAT video, it's a little wonky to search for an older video that does have it. (I'd rather Super Thanks (than PayPal) that video because it's public, and others could see it and go, "hey, yeah, I'll do super thanks too, bro!".) hehe

My favorite pre-2112 track. First Rush epic. Without Neil (drumming & lyrics) contributing to By-Tor we may have never had other epics. By-Tor paved the way for Rush’s sound going forward and for other epics - Necromancer, Fountain, 2112, Xanadu, Natural Science and Camera Eye.

Every time I hear Iron Maiden's "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner", the slow part in the ocean, it reminds me of the slow part in By-Tor and The Snowdog. Seems like an influence to me!

It's great to see how even at this early stage they were having fun with the whole power trio setup. My only complaint with the song is the stoner guitar solo, which was cut after a few years. But clearly they knew how important this song was. It was a staple of their early live shows, and was then promoted to closer/encore status. They finally dropped it from setlists in the 80s, but it returned with a vengeance in the early 00s. The cartoon film made for this in the 00s is hilarious: th-cam.com/video/BBSg2-r6gA8/w-d-xo.html

After hearing it live on all the world's a stage the studio version bored me. Live is crisper, heavier, more metallic, loser, and has a lot of extended epic pieces added to it. Gotta listen to that live version on atwas to get a real appreciation of the song. This album was the bands transition period from zeppelin like heavy straight forward blues rock to a more epic, metallic, and prog era. So in these next couple of albums they were still working out the kinks. But live they allowed themselves some freedom to just jam and experiment more. They went from being a zeppelin knock off to a band that actually influence several bands in the next decade ie maiden, metallica, queensryche etc.
