Rush had a lot of different styles over the 40 years of making albums. This album is just within the first 3 years. They had a very heavy keyboard era they went through. Rush even went through a little Grunge-like era with albums like Counterparts, Test for Echo and Vapor Trails. Will be interesting to see which era you like best

These are songs of my teen years that will never fade .I saw them twice in the early 80s and watched Neil most the time. If i make it to my 80s ill still be rocking Rush im my ear buds

I’m glad you’re doing this. I think everyone should listen to RUSH. But I will say that, knowing you are not really paying attention to the lyrics, you’re only getting half the story with their music.
Neil put everything he had into his lyrics, every time he wrote them. And the lyrics are just as important as the music when it comes to RUSH. I know Geddy wrote the lyrics for Cinderella Man, but they are good lyrics that can teach a person what it means to be better. So I can’t really agree with calling the song “garbage.”
But yes, in general I’m happy to see you enjoying these songs. Carry on with Cygnus X-1: Book II.

Still prefer Neil's 80's and beyond lyrics to his 70's lyrics. The history/fantasy/sci-fi lyrics were good for their all out prog years I guess, but Peart took a big leap forward in his lyric writing when the 80's hit and he started commenting on the real world around him.
@@carlgibbons5777 yes I must agree. All of his lyrics are great, but those he put to paper beginning in the 80s (specifically beginning with the Permanent Waves album) are far more meaningful from a real-life perspective.
Cinderella Man is a great track. Gary Cooper/Mr Deeds vibes every time.
I have a thumbdrive of every studio album released by Rush, and play it in my workshop. I work with ease when its on. I have followed them from the start, and will die rocking to them.
What an ending to a fantastic album. Try to remember those last few ending chords on Book 1 because they'll show up again in the middle of Book 2 Hemispheres.

Sci-Fi epic! Those sounds in the beginning. The launch into the black hole. Awesome! The journey into the black hole, and the discovery of Olympus on the other side. Incredible story. If you're into Sci-Fi, read the lyrics.
In 1981, this was the song that changed my taste musically. At this point in time, it had been all Journey, Foreigner, J. Geils Band for me. So, when I heard THIS, my reaction was WTF is this!!? The screaming at the end freaked me out. I had to catch my breath and listen again. I loved the feeling. It wasn't pretty or party music. It wasn't popular. It was intense and the drumming was WTF incredible!! This was my introduction to genuinely brilliant music beyond pop. This is when Rush won me over. Give me more!!!
A Farewell To Kings was my favorite Rush record for the longest time, probably because I realized then that they were my favorite band (sorry, Zeppelin). After listening to the whole catalog over the years, that opinion was replaced with Hemispheres. I think your take on Alex will change like it did at that point for pretty much everyone. The first chord on H is commonly referred to by guitarists as the “Alex Lifeson” chord. La Villa is like, “ok, if you aren’t convinced yet, how about we shove this into your ears.” Insanity.

It was interesting you commented that the music gave you a chaotic and a spinning feeling. The song is about a voyage into a black hole, so the music reflects the chaos and what that might feel like. It definitely takes more than one listen to appreciate the Cygnus X-1 story. I am glad you are going through the albums in order, so you will get to Book 2 next, as the first track on Hemispheres. The book 2 story is a little more coherent and has some great riffs.

There's a few words to explain this awesome creation! Prog, spacey, fusion, contemporary, classic, rock, (JAZZ) But always Rush. Hemispheres bring it on, probably has the best instrumental ever with La Villa.
Alex really shines on Hemispheres more than any other Rush album I think. Moving Pictures & Hemispheres flip between my two favorite Rush albums of their career.
I always loved that Neil chose in his lyrics to call the ship The Rocinante, which was the name of Don Quixote's horse. Tilting at windmills indeed...
What I really like about this one is how Geddy's vocals and the instrumental arrangements come together to create the sensation of falling into a black hole. The story begins with excitement building as our intrepid explorer enters the scene with a sense of adventure and eager anticipation of what he might discover, which quickly turns to dread and resignation, highlighted by Alex's guitar playing, as he becomes trapped in her pull. As she pulls him in, there's an initial sensation of floating and drifting, which gradually becomes faster and more chaotic as he continues his downward spiral, punctuated by Geddy's high note as he crosses the event horizon AKA the point of no return, culminating in the final moment when he is torn apart by her immense tidal forces. I'm really looking forward to seeing you find out what happens next, so I'll see you in Book 2!

Chaos.... yeah. If only one word could be used to describe this song, that would be the one. Some really interesting chord voicings from Alex are tucked away in this one, including the one he uses to open Hemispheres.
This put me to sleep just like it used to when I listen to it. I heard it was great in concert. They put a screen display of a guy falling through space while they played it. At least that is what I am told. Before my time.

Another one of my favorites from start to finish....or, does it ever finish??? The way they depict the emptiness of deep space is just mind-boggling. I owned a construction company and we used to plow snow during the winter months, we had about 50 accounts, to supplement income during that slow period. There was nothing like heading out at 2am into a blizzard with wind-driven snow coming from the front (it just added a special visual element to their mastery). I'd crank this song up, envisioning my truck as the Rosinante ("wheeling through the galaxy..."), and I was anticipating Cygnus-X1 (a genuine black hole) being swallowed up and spit out the other side... (I hope you heard the oh-so-faint heartbeat beckoning you to listen to part 2!) Also, my favorite segment is when you made the comment toward the end - it's like you're being clobbered by a fuckin' freight-train as "every nerve is TORN APARRRRRT!"
It is interesting that no matter how many times I listen to this the more I find in this song and the more I like it. Hemispheres coming up which is my favourite album by them. There are others that are close but this one inches above.

Forgot to add my obligatory "When I was a sprat" Rush story about this song. I bought the album shortly after it came out, when I was 14 and the same day at the mall I bought Stephen King's The Shining. Late that night, I was reading the book (terrifying myself) and listening to side 1 of the album on repeat (something I did a lot of as a kid). At some point I got up and turned the album over, and kept reading. I had just gotten to the part [SPOILERS] where the hotel starts sending visions of former residents to talk to the dad, and the narration about the Constellation Cygnus started. I literally screamed, threw my book across the room and jumped on the floor beside my bed completely scared beyond the capacity for rational thought, to quite Ghostbusters.
Another man's trash is another man's treasure...hardly ' garbage' as you stated about Cinderella Man...listen a few more times and give it a chance...intricate work by all three to open the song..all the lovely bass work...vocals are great...the tempo changes...the song riding out in funk style...a concise tune with all the Rush elements....
Fun Fact: the hero of this song named his ship "Rocinante" (old broken horse) which is also Don Quixote's horse's name from classic literature.
Before I hear your final comments, I'll say that this is not one of my favorite songs, but it contains some very tasty riffs, grooves, etc.
Just remember, this is 1977. Who else in the hard rock sphere was doing anything like this? You could say it's just another Rush "Franken-song", where they cobbled together various bits to create an epic in the best prog rock tradition. But they really up the ante here, giving it more of a narrative structure and putting more thought into the flow. This is the warm-up for what comes next, so let these motifs and themes sink in. You'll be hearing them again soon... 😉
If you refer back to your 'Working Man Live In Cleveland' reaction you find they ended that song with the opening riff of this song.
The title to this song is not some fansical invention but is the name of the first black hole ever discovered which was back in the 1960s. It is located in the Cygnus constellation which I think means swan. The reference to sisters and Lyra are all accurate. One thing you sell yourself short on with this critical listen-to of Rush is that these are not pop tunes that grab you right away. Next up, Hemispheres. This was MY album back in the day.
My early Rush mentor in 1981 said "Hemispheres is the best music Rush has ever created ... and don't let anyone tell you differently". He was so right. Art. Music. Intensity. Love.
I saw them play this back-to-back with Book II on the Hemisphere's tour. I was right at the front of the stage! Gotta love old school festival seating! 👍
You got the spinning part right! That’s the spaceship going into the black hole. The music is very conceptual and works as a soundtrack to the story.
Some food for thought.... The term "black hole" didn't appear until 1964. Cygnus X--1 was the first object to be classified as a black hole, and that was in 1972. In 1977, the concept was still very new to most people. To have a song about one was pretty novel (and very geeky! Thankfully, I'm geeky too). I use the word "song", but this isn't really a song so much as it is a composition. Still, in the context of the album, it works. It's very proggy and intense and different, which is nice because this whole album was a huge change for Rush and is very different from anything they did before. It ends on a VERY dramatic and intense note and preps you for the next VERY proggy album "Hemispheres".
Cinderalla Man is a jam. It's loosely based on an old movie titled Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.
I always thought this song would be improved without the opening narration. Fun little romp with a lot of great fills though and a nice prequel for side one of Hemispheres - Only 4 tracks on that album. I’m really looking forward to it.
"...every nerve is torn apart!". I think those were the highest notes Geddy ever hit on record. On their last tour when they played an abridged version of this song, they did it as an instrumental.
You also hear that F#7b9sus4 chord in this song. It's the opening chord in Hemispheres (and he later uses it in Far Cry and you could argue it's in Xanadu as well). It is the "Alex Lifeson chord". So recognizable.
Rush write some of the best riffs in rock. Just so euphonious. They are also the masters of transitions.

Thanks for doing these albums in the order us long time fans heard them. I would burn up an album waiting to see how they would top it. For me this and their next 4 or 5 albums are their best work. This as I’ve said is my favorite album all time. The lyrics in this album are just as important as the music. Especially title track, closer to the heart and Cinderella man. They are just the truth no matter what era you put them in.

Book II is better.
Book I is about a guy flying into a black hole. Book II is the back story for why he’s doing it. There’s a section in Book II where Book I fits in. You’ll hear it when it happens. Can’t wait for Hemispheres!
Cygnus X1 is Rush in full sci-fi mode. Such a cool and futuristic song. The full title is "Cygnus X-1:Book 1: The Voyage." It portrays a voyage into a black hole. It is named after black hole Cygnus X-1 discovered in 1964. The spoken word section is by producer Terry Brown (many think it is Neil). The liner notes indicate: "to be continued." Hemispheres (song) will continue the story with a full album side. Cygnus X-1 was played regularly until about 1980. Then parts of it were brought back from 94-97 and again from 2002-2004 and on the last tour in 2015.
Believe me when I say you cannot really judge Alex's playing until you've heard his solo in section IV of La Villa Strangiato: A Lerxst in Wonderland! It starts with spacious volume swells and gradually builds towards a climax, absolutely amazing! And yes it's in 7. He's my favorite prog guitar player and I'm a drummer.
Quite the journey this music is. Highs, lows and bumps in the road. It’s what I like to think of adventure travel.
Neil was fond of saying some adventures suck when you’re having them, but can make for some interesting stories later on.

A lot of people think Hemispheres was their most progressive album (mainly because of La Villa), but as an album, I always thought Kings was the most progressive.
Interestingly the longer story songs that reached their height on Hemispheres also end there.
The "exercises in self indulgence" which as usual they worked intensely to perfect also drove them (along w 200-250 dates/year) to a" place" they realized was wasn't healthy. As Geddy's said they were 'getting stupid' & didn't like what they saw. Esp now they had families.
So they decided to turn the page & make some changes.
Beginning with Pernant Wave they began recording near home and family, at LeStudio and setting aside that more intense long form.
Although, PW includes Natural Science and Moving Pictures has Camera Eye they less intense and done in a more manageable fashion. The group recalled Permanent Waves as a breath of fresh air and Spirit of Radio as emblematic of that feeling.
Anyhow, hope you enjoy the ride.
Geddy was referring to the touring schedule as "getting stupid" and not being healthy, and effect on their families, not the length of songs lol. You got the indulgence quote right, they felt they had pushed the long, multi-part pieces as far as they could go, and made efforts to make shorter, concentrated songs, while still being "busy".

That was a fun album. I think my opinion of it has not changed. Still not one I would choose to put on even while I wouldnt mind listening to it.
Alex and Geddy write all this music, including the rythmic parts you praised, then Neil comes in and adds the drums. So I think you aren't giving Alex enough credit.
I mentioned this before but Rush has a great ability to tell stories through music. This song especially they really made you feel like you are in space and getting ripped through the black hole
Cygnus book 2 is very deep in music and lyrics. Hard to completely grasp the first listen.
Like most reactors, you're going to be questioning how "Hemispheres (Cygnus X-1 Book 2)" ties into the first part. At least, you'll be questioning that 3/4 of the way through the song, as there aren't many clues as to how they are related. But I foresee that you'll be really, really confused because of your almost complete focus on the music alone. These songs are meant to be followed lyrically. While I realize that's not, as you've said, the way that you listen to music, it's almost essential when reacting to Rush. I'm not sure that any of the commenters up to now have stated what I'm about to state: when we (Rush fans) tell a reactor that a song is "great" or a "must listen", we are saying that the music AND lyrics are great and the message and/or story is integral to "getting into" the song (obvious exceptions are the instrumentals.) I'm not throwing shade on your listening preferences, just pointing out that Rush is a bit unique with the poignancy of the lyrical writing and that you're missing a large portion of what makes them special (to US, even if not to you). But as a reactor, you are missing a lot of "reaction" that your audience would like to get your take on. That said, I've enjoyed your journey thus far and keep up the good work. NOTE: my crystal ball says that you're going to really love the songs from the later years when they were in their 40s and 50s and might consider those albums as the band's best work. (No, I'm not putting money on it... lol.)

What's strange about this song, specifically the 2 "books," they're 2 completely different stories, but intertwined with each other. This one is a voyage in the space ship, the "Rosinante" flying into the black hole, and the 2nd is a battle between Greek Gods, and the main character becoming another "god" in the end. Weird, but AWESOME!
This and part 2 are epic. Only Rush could come up with a song that stretches over 2 albums with a story that starts in the future and ends in Ancient times with the Greek Gods.
What if the "future" takes place before the "past" like in Star Wars?

Chaos is a great word. Book 2 is a lot more coherent to my ears and prefer it over book 1. The entire hemispheres album (which I assume you have now heard) is one that I can throw on vinyl and just get lost. The atmosphere of the album is amazing to me.
Really can’t wait for you to hit the 80’s post moving pictures. The music is so different and people either love it or hate it. I love it.
Sadly I'm a big Rush fan but I've not even heard most of this. Didn't have satellite radio long enough, apparently. This song is cool but really reaching into bizzaro land. I'm firmly convinced they were doing some acid in this time period, and whatever else, which spurred on the music. And lyrics of course. I'll settle for all 3 are masters of their respective crafts.
This song is really strong and really prog, but it still features screaming/screechy Geddy especially at the end. Not the most accessible vocals. lol I prefer his more melodic 80's vocals. I used to fall asleep to this record when I first became a Rush fan and the high pitched screaming at the end of this song would wake me right up instantly. haha! Ah.....memories.

I always loved Geddys bass tone in these early works..... the biting, mid-range attack seems to fill the rhythmic space of a guitar while still holding down the low end while Alex solos, that opens up the space for his higher tone vocal. All so well balanced, these guys are geniuses

How do these three guys with no college or University training pull this type of music of just after High school and then play it again with out written notes ?
Theres many many musicians and people with no 'formal' training who do all kinds of amazing things. They create their own understanding of things. Muscle memory is a thing also. The more you play your instrument the more in tune you are with it.

Certainly not numbers that high... maybe at first they count but no... they point isn't to count it's to feel it rhythmically and/or hear it phrase-wise.
