What a great song, been a fan for 40 years and off that album it always stood out for me. Instrumentally and lyrically a look into the what became the the best band ever.
1st time I heard this was live on Exit Stage Left. Like so many of the songs on those albums its a notch grittier, even more energetic. Once I read the lyrics I was even more impressed. Still unpacking what Neil wrote on this and so many songs 30+ yrs later.
Neil looking as an outsider to the "American Dream" how the US says one thing and does another. Beneath the noble bird (The eagle) between the proudest words (The US Constitution) this is such a political song and depending on what your status is, you love or hate it.
“Dense” is a great way to put this song. I believe it was the first song they wrote with Neil as the lyric writer. Geddy said in an interview once that Neils lyrics were very stimulating but a real “mouth full” to sing. Lol! Over time Neil became much more sensitive to Geddys need to sing them. It’s a real collaborative process between them. Can’t wait for By-Tor!!
Neil brought the whole entity to another level, and Geddy and Alex realized IMMEDIATELY that the potential was ENDLESS, Bytor And The Snow Dog will open a whole new window when you get there, be prepared lol
That’s why they call them Rush-this album is actually a template of their entire career. The lyrics he wrote reflects their age at the time, what they see, are experiencing, feel and what’s happening sociologically at the time. It was the pre bicentennial of America and look how deep those lyrics are about us as a nation, at that moment in time. Every album offers a bit of the same but with more current, relevant and varying degrees of technological/musical/instrumental advancements. 🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦👍👌🤯
“If you’re in a band, you’re only as good as your drummer.” - that, in a nutshell, is a big part of why Rush became a great band. It started with this album, although they weren’t quite there yet.
Dense is a great way to describe this song. This has everything I love about Rush. Great lyrics, creative drumming, instrumental shifts. Next is By-Tor and the Snowdog!!!! Prog Rush is born 😁
You put your finger on it - dense. For me, that has become there trademark like what I expect from them. Lyrically, dense with meaning. Musically, dense with time signature changes, 3 solos happening simultaneously and super interesting sonic details coming through excellent engineering.
“I didn’t dislike it. Don’t know if I liked it.” Haha. I’ve heard songs like that before. Usually those get better the more I hear them. Not always though. I’ve always considered this one of my top two or three on this album. I love the lyrics and the different change ups in the music. Dense is definitely a great way to describe it. Looking forward to the next review.
I agree.. dense! But you can definitely hear the change of adding Neil! This was the 1st song Neil wrote! Geddy said it was a mouthful.. LOL! By-Tor will blow you away! LOL!! Be well and God bless.. from Texas!
I have not listened to this song since I bought the album back in the seventies. I don't remember what I thought back then but I think I have rediscovered a song I like.
I think this song gets better the more you hear it and it’s great live. All that really matters on this album is the next song: “By-Tor & the Snowdog” is the invention of a new genre of music that didn’t exist up until this moment in 1975: Prog-Metal.
What I really like about this song is the 3-3-3-3-2-2 rhythm pattern throughout (but especially in the chorus), with Neil breaking out of that into a more traditional 4-4 groove for the last verse. It's an intense song which goes by quickly.
Dense is a good description of this song. LOL Neil's lyrics are more interesting but he also became a better lyrist over time. I saw in an interview with Geddy that the two of them would go over the lyrics together so it would be something Geddy felt comfortable in singing. This song does need more than one listen. Cheers
Yes they do pack a lot into this short song. One of my favorites though. The live version on Exit Stage Left is great. Unfortunately I’ve never seen them play this live myself. Started going to Rush shows in 1983. Last time they played Beneath Between & Behind live was in 1981.
Good analysis, this is a song that you need to listen to more than once. I always viewed it as a really good drum workout. The guitar and bass are so-so on this one, but the drumming is very strong.
Despite gaining Peart they still had some Zep nuances in this album. Many bands did back in the day. Zep set the standard for 70's rock. This song has some nuances of Zeps heart breaker/living loving maid. BUT if you listen hard enough one can hear ace of spades by motorhead unless that is just me ?
I am really enjoying these reactions and I really hope that you do the live albums as well in chronologic order with the studio albums. The first live album "All the Worlds a Stage" is amazing and they do a few of the songs off of their first Album "Rush". You will immediately notice a huge change to those songs with the addition of Neil. One interesting thing to remember is that Neil joined the band right before the tour for their first album. He definitely changed the drum parts to all of those songs significantly which made them much more interesting. I have a feeling that people that had only heard them on the record or on the few radio stations that played them and then went to a live show during the "Rush" album tour were probably blown away by the difference. Take care, GreedyNewt972
I love this song though its short but packed with skill. The live version on exit stage left. Is better. But I'm partial to exit stage left that's my favorite Rush album. Not one of their greatest songs but it's great live a skill packed song to throw in a live show between more intricate songs.
If you’re going to mention the writers of the song, why not give the full information? This song is a Lifeson- Peart creation. Lifeson had the music and Peart came up with the words.
Hah, you are officially becoming a Rush nerd. These are the same thoughts that we had when we first heard it. However, you have had the perspective to hear some of their later works before hearing these early records. So, you have a little bias. To us, this was fresh and new. Having fun watching your ride on the Rush train!
This is a bit of a deep cut in a rush Pantheon of songs.... I believe it may indeed be the first song Neil wrote lyrics for and if you were to look at them..... getting Lily had his work cut out for him trying to figure out how to sing this incredible amount of syllables within the course of the songs they were writing but somehow it all worked out.
This was always one of my favorites from their early period. It thetdoes have the Zeppelinesque feel, but that 'stop on a dime' tightness, and the sense of speeding along or flying at a great velocity, carries hints of what is to come. Plus the theme is powerful, Patriotism can really go off the rails and turn into a fast-track to autocracy. We here in Canada have never used the term 'Un-Canadian' in our political rhetoric, simply because there is no concrete fframe of reference for such an idea. Americans flout these terms promiscuisly. Does this mean that anyone who lives abroad and is not an American citizen is also 'UnAmerican'?
YUP, one of their shorter songs to be sure. The lyrics on this song are some of Neil's best, IMO. I believe Geddy Lee once said that this song was extremely hard for him to sing, there being so much to say and not a lot of time to say it! I actually prefer the LIVE versions of this song, it being a bit slower tempo, although it's a shorter versio (of an already short song) . Thanks JP.👍
Definitely “dense”, this one kinda smacks you in the face. I still hear a bit of Zep, but they have their own sound here, especially the pauses that punctuated much of their earlier songs, and Neil’s drumming just draws your attention . Lyrics were a commentary on the US as we were nearing the bicentennial, words that are unfortunately even more salient today.
These first three songs of this album are just more of a continuation of the first, nothing really special yet, the next song By-Tor is really where you start to hear Rush more as we know them today, progressive rock

I once read this song described as a race between bass, guitar, and drums. Rush fan since "78. The best.
What a great song, been a fan for 40 years and off that album it always stood out for me. Instrumentally and lyrically a look into the what became the the best band ever.

MAN I KNEW ALL THIS STUFF IN THE 70'S. I LISTENED TO EVERY ALBUM ALL THE WAY THROUGH WITH MY HEADPHONES ON AND LYRICS IN HAND. 50 YEARS AGO,
Pay attention to the lyrics. "Beneath the noble bird, between the proudest word, behind the beauty, cracks appear..." just brilliant!
The album art attracted me to listening to the album. This was 1975. I was 13 years old. I’m 60 now. Rush FOREVER!
The live recording from "Exit...Stage Left" is the definitive version.
One of my all time fave of the oldies. Lyrics meant a lot to me.
Neil looking as an outsider to the "American Dream" how the US says one thing and does another. Beneath the noble bird (The eagle) between the proudest words (The US Constitution) this is such a political song and depending on what your status is, you love or hate it.

Great songs! I wish this kinda rock was still being written and performed live. Too many SoundCloud DJ's, not enough musicians these days.
This was always a really fun one to play live. This is actually my favorite song on this album.
It's a good one this song 🎵!
Neil brought the whole entity to another level, and Geddy and Alex realized IMMEDIATELY that the potential was ENDLESS, Bytor And The Snow Dog will open a whole new window when you get there, be prepared lol

Definitely. On second listen I like the song more. Just was a lot at once 😂
It’s great on exit stage left.
I've always loved that cool break at 2:11 right after the guitar solo. Only lasts about 16 seconds but it is so great.
I agree.. dense! But you can definitely hear the change of adding Neil! This was the 1st song Neil wrote! Geddy said it was a mouthful.. LOL! By-Tor will blow you away! LOL!! Be well and God bless.. from Texas!

Good, bad or otherwise, this song (and this album) shows that they were on a new trajectory, if nothing else.

All Great!! We have what we have. Js. We see the band getting really interesting.
Great little tune.
Hope you've got lyrics up on a screen - lyrics are an integral part of their songs

Comment for the algorithm. Nothing more to add to what's already been said here. BY-TOR NEXT!
Keep in mind this was their 2nd record and first with Neal
