    Fabrication Disclaimer:
    Any time you are using a machine that cuts steel the machining forces or cutting surfaces can KILL YOU.
    Pressure Kills Disclaimer:
    I am not an expert or engineer. However I know high pressure air is even more dangerous. It can KILL YOU OR OTHERS AROUND YOU. I don't know anyone's ability or attention to detail. These are are critical for safety (your calculations, measurements, material selection or ability to use tools properly). I cannot give you enough information in youtube comments to warn you how to proceed or all the dangers or steps you must take for success (not hurting yourself). I ask everyone wanting to make an airgun to join a forum to research this for months before undertaking any project. Any questions/answers addressed about air gun fabrication probably will be missing a lot of critical information you need to know. Don't assume it is enough. Please look up how-to on www.gatewaytoa...
    Or another airgun build forum. These guys can give you good information and review what you are doing for safety.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    This is a ".44 caliber" (.429) airgun made from scratch (uses a modified Spyder Paintball trigger system and a cut down Chaszel 44 magnum barrel liner). Tube is 1" x .083 DOM steel, valve and endcaps are 1" 416, pins are Grade 8 or "better" SHCS with one very large one hidden by the trigger. All these pressure tube components were tested to 7200 PSI with no issues. Breech is 1" 416 Stainless with threaded barrel. Bolt/handle and hammer cocking handle are large Grade 8 or 12.9 SHCS. Bolt handle is 5/16" and rear breech bolt is 1/4" as recommended for safety.
    Throated for up to a 310 gr bullet but it may need a little work for more FPS or maybe remain just a pipe dream. It may now shoot the 310 gr after a peek poppet and TP throat increase modification. As of 3/21 it shoots the 245 gr at about 740 FPS for 300 FPE and should do a little beter at 3500 psi. Round ball may break the sound barrier??
    Last pic shows a recovered round ball from the range at home that expanded to .655". It takes about 210 pumps to fill it to 2900 PSI (start of shot string curve happened to coincide with 200 bar) and gets about 4-5 shots.
    Please take high pressure gas serious. It can kill you or others around you.
    If you point it at a deer it can kill that too. There is the benefit. Cheap deer, predator, turkey hunting (cheap but not easy). Overcoming objections: this is a minimal FPE deer gun depending on the whitetail and where you shoot it. I will be working on getting a little more power or a different one altogether.
    Check out www.gatewaytoa... for more information about airguns and safety!

    God bless

    Added a peek poppet, increased throat, transfer port and bolt probe bore diameter and shot the 245 gr bullet at 742 FPS for 300 FPE at 3000 PSI. Have to do more testing. My > homemade < pressure tube will support 3600 PSI or more so I need to cast some 310 gr and see how fast the round ball goes.

    I recently built my own pcp as well , the air chamber holds 2200 pcp on a tiny resivour my 1st tune was pushing over 40 FPE but only getting 3 shots , Im down in the high 20s now getting 14 shots .
    I really like seeing what people are able to do on thier own RE : building your own PCP , I knew nothing at all about tuning or how to build with my only mechanical background being I know how to work on bicycles .
    I watched tutorials learned as I went and was super conservative on how high I would pressurize it 2000 PSI seemed crazy high and I had it a month before I pumped to the working pressure of 2200 PSI .
    Love to hear you just do a show and tell us How and what parts , talk about your airgun background, seeing you shoot targets is great you can see it's powerful but I would love to hear more about your build .

      @@noidontthinksolol always pays to keep safety in mind , the unit I put on my 2240 is called a Safepac, you have to take the valve out of the gun then take the back half off this is the part where the CO2 cartridge pushes up against the seal then screw in place a CNC machined Aluminum tube , it can be safely pumped up to 2400 psi , if you are interested have a look by typing in Safepack installation , there is a machinist named Rob , AKA froggy airguns that makes and distributes these units .
      If you want to check out a horror story of a guy using the highpack system which goes together like any other pcp but has segments that are screwed together and then the valve itself is oringed and then Pinned with 2 or more screws. The major flaw in that system is the valve can become a projectile if something fails , in this case it did and shot the valve thru the Dudes Leg . His name is Randy and he was or is known in the airgun world.
      Type in exploring the PCP explosion.
      Randy definitely came close to death because he had the riffle pointed up and was target shooting just prior to it failing. Would have left a big hole in his head for sure .

    • @bigbirderbob3710
      @bigbirderbob3710  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct. This was the initial testing and it was so accurate I havent added a barrel band. Maybe after the deer season (March). I havent been hunting again with it but I just have to be cognizant of hand placement. Its not a lift. My 44 mag revolver you can mess your thumb up if you put your hand forward next to the cylinder. On the other hand if I screw up on making the barrel band every shot could change POI.

    • @randomidiot8142
      @randomidiot8142 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigbirderbob3710 maybe the barrel band could allow the barrel to continue to free float and the band would just prevent catastrophic receiver or barrel damage like if you dropped it? I tried a couple different barrel band tweaks with my Marauder and I kept going back to completely free floating inside the band because it was giving me the best results.

    • @bigbirderbob3710
      @bigbirderbob3710  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made it from 1" OD x.083 ID DOM a513 steel tubing. As far as safety, it has a better theoretical safety margin than most PCPs. I made the internals to fit (.8295" or so). The pins (screws holding the end and valve) and placement should provide a better safety margin too. Calculations tell you the pressure you can probably tested it to. So I used a hydraulic oil hand pump to test at 7200 PSI and it sat for a while. I then replaced pins for safety. Tube is fairly easy to make so I am stating all this extra just in case someone makes one based off a short description. It should be done safely cause you can kill yourself.
      FYI for people with a mini lathe, I did this 1" OD x 30" tube and have done 1.25" OD tubes on my 14" mini lathe with only a 20mm spindle bore but it takes a "steady rest", working off the far end of the lathe to finish the ends flat with a file (oh no!). If you work on the chuck end you need an insert screwed into holes you are going to make in the tube ends anyway. If you want to do this just realize you must have or have access to a "low standards meter".

      @@bigbirderbob3710 thanks for the reply. So I guess the to ends are held on with screws or pins? That's the. First time Ive seen that done. But it does make sense and seems safety than threads.

      Yes. They are gr 12.9 high tensile strength Socket Head Cap Screws. The Discovery airgun and Maurauder. among others, use screws to pin the valve. I dont have a way to thread such a large diameter and length tube accurately or I would use that method.

      Thanks for the question.
      I would advise anyone wanting to make an airgun (no matter what power) to join a dedicated forum. I am not an expert, rather a bumbling tinkerer. I try to take a lot of time for safety however. I'm not even sure I could convey even the safety aspects in a video let alone a build. And then Id have to play it at 8x speed cause I do it piecemeal over maybe 6 months.
      Its amazing how many "experts" there are on TH-cam. Real experts on forums will tell you when you are doing something wrong. TH-cam isn't set up for that type of feedback. However this airgun is pretty simple. It is similar to a QB78 with a pinned valve and fill end for HPA. Google "Big Bore Higgins" to read about bumbling a .308 caliber that was made from a precursor of a QB78.
      The parts cost very little but equipment and tooling will run into the thousands. If you purchase $25 worth of tools and supplies here and there you will fool yourself into thinking it is not much. Thats how I did it. A mini lathe will be at least $400 and tooling will be at least that. There are parts available online for more of a lego build though.

      Powerful airguns are very loud and do need quite a long barrel to be efficient. It makes it difficult to add a suppressor with a real noise reduction effect without adding much length to an already long gun.
      I do own a PCP from a well known brand with a "suppressor" covering all the barrel length.... this airgun is one of the loudest i own... IMO this type of suppressors is more a "llok good" thing than an efficient solution.

      I use the Spyder for the trigger only. I actually replaced the sear with a 1095 alloy sear because the stock sear is made for semi-auto and allows the sear to move forward (sear has an oval hole). The valve is like a QB78 but larger diameter and elongated. I have pictures on the forum when I made my .308. In my opinion it is a better valve/tube design for big bore than a crosman. However, it isnt very cutting edge and I am pretty sloppy at macining but try to be very safe. It has a much longer throat because I have my spring up front (antiquated threaded spring retainer like a QB). Sometime I want to make a shorter throat and rear spring.

Then start small with modding a QB 78 or Crosman (QB 78 makes a better platform due to less holes). Mine is similar to a QB78 internally. Be careful. I uploaded another video but it is age restricted due to deer hunting.

Please be careful. Join a forum like Gatewaytoairguns.org and get all the details on building an airgun. There is a ton of safety details that need to be read up on. I'm still learning. I replaced the side pins on this one because the placement was not good. Scares the crap out of me when I put together. If you do it wrong you have a 800 fpe projectile (valve or bolt or fill end) coming back into your face!

      No. Just get a Seneca 44 or 50 and you'll be strides on your head.

      Thanks for the question. Check my other video. I can't go into all the details for safety's sake but if you look at a QB78 or a Crosman 180/400/160 it is about the same parts. They arent off the shelf parts but you can create them on a lathe. Please be careful. Join a forum like Gatewaytoairguns.org and get all the details on building an airgun. There is a ton of safety details that need to be read up on. I'm still learning. I replaced the side pins on this one because the placement was not good. Scares the crap out of me when I put together. If you do it wrong you have a 800 fpe projectile (valve or bolt or fill end) coming back into your face!

      why 45cal instead of 46?

      Yea, you know 45 has some options that 44 won’t, bullet wise. Like choices in light weight pistol bullets up to heavier rifle bullets. I wonder about sabots like used in black powder.
      Nothing wrong with 44, it works.

      Thanks for watching. Have you ever watched the Bean "Do it yourself" episode:
      th-cam.com/video/Z68t7NqxWis/w-d-xo.html
      This pretty much matches the way I work, my preparation, measurements and fervor. Only Bean can get away with showing such haphazard DIY.
