I'm getting back into going to college now. I say "getting back into" because there have been phases in my life where I tried to do that so other people were appeased. This time, I'm doing it for myself. This time, I genuinely just want to learn. This is really good timing.

Same same. And I will be 50 soon. This will be my 2nd semester at college. (Kind of good to watch the younger students drop out of classes.)

I had a few people mock me because, I completed very complex and complicated questions which as a group and we got a very high grade. However, the mocking part came because I couldn’t explain the complex solutions properly and the person who could not complete it got pissed off at me for no reason. I got questioned how I got accepted into the world’s top 5 uni just because, I was not able to explain my solutions properly… I wanted to say just because you are good at taking exams, doesn’t mean you will be good at solving difficult and complex questions that you can’t find solutions to but, it would be egotistical of me so I just didnt argue and went ofd my own way.

I still struggle with this concept. This, and the understanding that everyone's brain works differently. Anxiety has always been this crazy obstacle standing in the way of my education. In my youth, I would always justify my poor grades to not being 'smart enough.' When in reality, it was self-sabotage and perfectionism preventing me from giving it my all. As an older student, the same rings true, but you have the added pressure of seeing the younger minds around you weave in and out of subjects almost effortlessly.
The trick is acceptance. You may not have the greatest GPA or be able to understand concepts as quickly, but for me, success is measured in the attempt.

When I was in high school I was always performing top of my class in physics or math subjects, but I would do the homework at home and not show huge outwards interest during classes; even while paying attention. People generally didn't notice me too much, even in a graduating class of about 13 people. I had good self-esteem generally, and didn't let people affect me because of that.
For various reasons, I didn't go to post-secondary school. I had to move out of my parents' house and ended up just working, smoking weed, and playing video games every day. After doing this and being called a crackhead by my neighbours, and generally not being percieved as a smart person anymore; my self esteem fell down pretty hard.
I found myself not doing anything I wanted, and just doing whatever would make people like me; this was obviously unsustainable and didn't work in long term relationships with other people. I started college again this last semester, and found that my self-esteem was still really low, I was worried about what my professor thought and what the other students thought. I'm a generally polite and quiet person and so of course nobody had negative or positive feelings about me either way, but I still felt constantly that I had to prove myself.
I wanted to prove that I was smart enough to take pure math courses and be a "serious" mathematician, I'm taking more math courses this fall and am worried that I'll still feel this way going onwards. A video by Thomas Garrity about Mathematical Maturity really helped me realize that I don't have to prove anything, and that everyone is at their own stage of mathematical maturity; which combined in my mind with your video about how it only takes two weeks to catch up to other students in the same course to make me feel much more confident that this semester will be a good one.

When I was a student, I got praises as well as jealous remarks for my ability(some used to say that only those questions came in exams which I prepared, which was obviously a bogus claim made for a math nerd) Now as a graduate , still getting the same attention. If you have talent in a field and have passion for it, others' remarks are immaterial.

We have been taught to worry about what people might think of you, and so we aimed to please everyone all the time, except ourselves. As we got older we realized it almost never led to anything positive, so we started not to give a shit anymore about what other people may think. They don't pay our bills. Younger people have already learned this lesson and in that aspect, live happier lives than we did. Just don't fart when people are around you.

Great video, and an important conversation. “Not caring” isn’t a negative way of life. It’s a way to live happy, joyous, and free. I saw a tweet awhile back that stuck with me, “Stop working so hard,” and I now put that on my to-do when I awake. Becoming a human is about growth, and part of growth is letting go of the past. The past does not last, and today is another chance to do the next best and better thing.

Thank you sorcerer for making this video. I'm a high school student and I've fallen in love with mathematics. I also like your videos a lot. At the beginning of high school I definitely didn't yet know something like this would happen. In fact, math felt mainly like an obligation at first and I found it even a bit irritating at first.
In my home country when you go to high school, you have to decide whether you want to study advanced or ordinary level of mathematics. Due to my lack of interest in math, I ended up choosing the ordinary level at first.
However, I took only one ordinary level course when I realised that it was too easy and hence even more boring. So I did something quite unusual and I changed to the advanced level and hopped straight to the new class. I had to skip a few courses and self-study them later on vacation but it was by self-studying actually I fell in deep love with math. Changing to the more advanced level was one of the best decisions I've made, even though some considered it a bit abnormal I guess.

I could do calculus before, but sometimes I would chase people instead of dreams which would slow me down, now that I'm implementing this into my life I'm see my learning curve has been exponential. I feel more happy, and I hope more people, younger or older get this message.

Im not experienced enough to add any meaningful comment thats backed up, but Im in highschool and have a very deep interest in mathematics.
One other thing is I often feel a little uncomfortable when I mess up an exam badly. Im not anywhere near "good" at math, but Im at least confident enough to be able to pass most highschool exams and some undergraduate ones in math. So of course when I dont score as well as I thought, Im not just disappointed but I often feel embarrassed, like I feel as if the way people around be view me will change, maybe think Im not very good at math and physics. If course, I have many areas where I can improve, but it shatters the little confidence and motivation I have. And I see other people struggle with this too, a friend in my class fot the highest score in our first exam this year and on the second, when he was talking about how he wasnt fully sure if he was gonna do well. I tried to reassure him saying he was the top scorer last time, he'll probably do well again. He responded telling me not to say that since he wasnt fully sure.
I feel like Im under pressure around others, but at the same time, sometimes I might be putting them under pressure without realising it too.
Im not sure if I can directly take this advice and wake up not caring about how others think of me and the things I do, but I think I needed to hear this, so I can stay motivated. Epic video

There will always be a gap in understanding when giving advice, but experience has the role of populating it. When we tell others that they shouldn't worry about people's opinions, we expect them to know that instead of substituting dull reflection with ignorance, they must be data-centric and seek to cultivate an intuition that sifts truthiness from the bitterness of criticism. People in time will realize what we mean in our attempt to distill pertinent internalizations, if they're palpable, so I guess it is fine.
