The problem here is largely that Light wanted people to know there was someone casting judgement, random heart attacks although would be better to avoid any possible link to himself, as in like there isn't even anything to suspect because people have heart attacks all the time. He wanted the attention, and maybe was also a bit cocky about being untraceable.

I mean he didn’t need to kill Lind L Taylor to achieve that. He had the attention. People already knew. That’s why the broadcast aired in the first place. But his ego couldn’t handle being criticized. And then did all the shenanigans with the police and the fbi to get close to L, all cuz he got embarrassed on national tv. He was upset that he got played for a fool. He decided to make it his mission to find the guy who embarrassed him and kill him. That was the whole thing. It wasn’t like L had the means to stop Light in any capacity. The only real wildcard is Misa. Cuz, they could probably deduce she is a copy cat. And misa could be tracked down. So they would could probably get their hands on the death note. But it wouldn’t tell you who the other death note user was. But yeah, Light could have gotten everything he wanted had he just put his fragile ego aside and focused on the mission. But no he needed to get his lick back so damn bad.

    Few things:
    1) Light taking all this as a bit of a game obviously wasn't wise, but I wouldn't say that (in a vacuum) killing the fake L was 'dumb'... Let's face it, most people - even highly intelligent people - wouldn't ever suspect it was a targeted broadcast. Back then Light was smooth sailing, he had no reason to believe something that strong would come right off the bat.
    2) It's true that Light would've been much harder to catch if he didn't play that game with L, but NOT impossible. First, to state the obvious: L can control the media.
He could use that to pinpoint Light's location even if Light doesn't play his game. Say: Once he find out where Light gets his victim's names, he could arrange to have some of them NOT appear in certain publications/locations. Say, on Day 1 he doesn't publish one of the name in America. If the person dies, then on day 2he doesn't publish a new name in Europe. If that person dies, Day 3 he doesn't publish a new name in Asia. Suddenly, that person doesn't die. So he knows the killer is in Asia. Day 4 he does the same with China. Day 5, India. Day 6, Russia. Day 7, Japan, and the person doesn't die. So after a week, he already knows the killer is in Japan. And Light would have no way of knowing this is even happening unless he looks at ALL publications of the entire world, which obviously would take forever, never gonna happen.

If only our lives were as private as in Death Note. All of your online interactions are catalogued and fingerprinted by marketers and law enforcement. If you ever pop up on their radar, they will know everything about you that you've decided to share electronically. The scary thing is that the "targeted broadcast" is something that's done all the time, every day, to everyone that uses any social media/content platform. If there were a real life Death Note, there would be practically no way to effectively synthesize new information and use it without being caught without going scorched earth and shutting down the internet. The only way would be to leverage key deaths to grant you information covertly (dead drops and pick ups, etc.) or overtly (radio, tv, emergency services broadcasts). Even still, you'd need to minimize the actionable information you got to accomplish your goal (whatever it is) without drawing suspicion. Prolonged use would always expose the wielder one way or another due to their limited ability to act on limited information, so best to keep the actions to a minimum while maximizing effectiveness. Light could have been far more capable, but that wasn't the point of the story.

You're not wrong in any of this, but the point of the character is this, he WANTED to be seen. He even admits that if he had chosen a different cause of death for every criminal, he would probably never be discovered, as it would pass by as coincidence. And when he fell for that first L trick, his ego was shattered when he found out that he wasn't the only smart person in the world. So from this point foward, he is more interested in killing L than judging criminals. L is the main puzzle, that's why he responds to his actions, he wanted to tease L, because for him to win in the shadows, it would not been fun. It's just like azula "but you're the most beautiful, smartest, perfect girl in the world"

He wanted that so he could get close to L, to eventually kill him. In any game, defense is easier than offence. Light put himself in danger to then switch L into offense which draws L in closer.
He did make the mistake of killing Lind L. Taylor, but after that, the mistakes are intentional. The only thing he kept secret was that he could control cause of death. Naiomi guessed that, a loose end that shouldnt have happened, and only happened because Raye (illegally) talked about the case.

However, you might find it surprising how many geniuses can't follow simple instructions, and it's almost always because of some nonsensical reason.
Being smart makes you capable of dealing with complex situations, but the complexity of reality is infinite, so generally having some sense helps more than IQ, unlike how school works.

Light's goal hinged around it being obvious someone was passing judgement on the wicked. Both of these would have been much harder had he decided to kill naturally instead.

In a way, Light wanted to be acknowledged and seen, as his goal was to have the world be altered using Kira’s ideals and judgements. He wanted the perfect world of only “good people”, and to be seen as a “God”, which can’t be done if criminals are dying of random things. Light wanted the people to know of his existence, to create fear, which is ultimately his flaw in the end. In a way, his love for a challenge is the reason why he got caught; when he takes risks, it makes him feel inevitable and smarter, which makes him feel like he can push some limits and do more, when it actually makes him more careless and imprecise.

here we go, first time I've found a theory video that doesn't make some claim where they say that N finds out x in episode y, when the show makes it plainly obvious that he learned x way before episode y, which makes it just so annoying, like come on, this is supposed to be theories, not nutcases that didn't pay much attention.
like the show makes it obvious that N knows who Kira is as soon as the police bit happens, like sure he sends a few things to the *one* other suspect, but that's just to cover his bases, he obviously knew it was Light, problem is the 'how?', 'how is Light doing it?' and he needed more of that part to arrest him. like 'whos Kira?' was never much of an actual mystery in the show as it was solved the episode it started in, its that mystery of 'how?, and what can we do?' that's the actual mystery.
so thank you for being the one person so far to figure that out that's made a video on it, you watched episode two, yay (yeah that was some sarcasm, like why does everyone get stumped by that? the show couldn't really make it more blunt other then straight up having N say 'oh yeah its him, but how? I need more evidence to arrest him', which is what the show says if you pay attention to the actions)
so thank you for making a video pointing it Light's major mistake, and how its that flaw of his that the show goes around, that that is the story, if it wasn't for his pride it'd be a completely different story. it was nice, as passive aggressive or whatever as this comment is, I did enjoy the video, have a like and a comment

"He should do nothing so that the police would chase something that might never exist."
This contradicts with Light initial motivation and goal when he started picking up the death note and using it. Light wanted the world to know the existence of someone with omnipotent ability to indiscriminately kill anyone that he deemed "worthy" to kill, mainly criminals, heavy offenders, repeated offenders, and society's cancer such as bullies. He wanted the world to know such an almighty judge exists to act as a deterrence to those existing and potential evil doers, thus decreasing the evil of the world. He literally says something along the line of "There is a lot of evil goes unpunished in this world, either by incompetent, cowardly, or ignorant people. The world is wrong, and someone must change it and make the world a better place." in episode 1.
While I might agree that Light makes a lot of mistakes, it doesn't come from his lack of wisdom but rather his pride and ego, and later on, his god syndrome as he literally acts and thinks himself as a god.
We've been showed that Light has a lot of potential when he loses his memory and abandoned his ego, he could even match up to L's brilliance given enough time and experience. Too bad that his thought process has derailed too much from a mortal's perspective and that gets his sorry ass killed in the end lol.

this observation doesn't take into account Light's personality at all. he is secretly a moral person who feels like murdering people is a burden, but can't resist the potential for power. he has a hidden guilt complex intertwined with his overblown ego. he has a desire to be noticed and praised for everything he does. he has no desire to really operate from the shadows at all. getting into the provocation game with L is exactly what gets him going, because he doesn't just like passing justice, he likes to cause and control chaos, because it makes him feel invincible. a person like this is not gonna think coldly and calmly.

I mean, it was apparent he had technically "already lost" the second L pinned him as being in a specific city in Japan, L already had an idea of what types of things Kira might fall for, his primary motives, and a base level understanding of his psyche, so nailing down he was a likely a student in Japan with connections to the police basically sealed his fate. Only through extreme stupidity from his father, a NEED for L to "prove without a doubt" that Light was Kira, and a plot contrivance Shinigami was Light able to weasle his way to a victory.

Good video. I would like to add though that he learns the limits and possibilities of the death note by experimenting with it. These experiments do draw more attention to himself, but also give him more options to outsmart the police. It's a paradox. @@davewhispers7720 That's completely wrong. I read the Sherlock Holmes stories. And a huge fan of his canon. Holmes is portrayed a believer of God for example. Which is a magical thing alone. But that's not the point, Holmes would never bias his reasoning, even if he believed something for so long. If he is presented with something that contradicts what he knows, then he is fully wanting to learn and adapt. Holmes never says the supernatural isn't real- he only states that it isn't as common as people would throw it around on every situation. It'll be like, someone would win 5 bucks in a lottery, just when you needed gas money, and they just say it's "God's Will" that brought you it. It's absurd things like that, he'll shut down, because people throw those around willy nilly. He'll never overlook the truth if it's in his face. It's the garbage adaptations of Holmes in modern day, that make you think he isn't into the Supernatural or some sort of atheist. But if you read even a single book, you'll know that's false. I'm not being mean or anything like that, or coming at you specifically. Cause I'm not. I'm just talking generally about what you said. It's a false statement that I imagine a lot of people make. His line proves that statement is wrong..."When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth". He would easily deduce a supernatural force at work.

Dude, Light didn't even win cause he was using 'some kind of death god magic', he won cause of 2 factors, the first factor being that L didn't have any friends or equals, and when L and Light met, they both become friends(Or so L thought) and the 2nd Factor is of L being mysterious, I know, this might sound dumb, but see, if a guy sits like a guy on a potty trying to get a dump, and looks like a very different guy to the one you believed to be the No. 1 Detective in the whole entire world, would you believe him 100•/•, some people may say yes, some may say no, but the main part is that people around L and Light were alittle stupid and Light Yagami's dad was a good guy and he thought his son was just a normal high school student, and his fellow co-workers thought the same, and because of that, L's fellow investigators didn't trust him, and he also says that the chances of Light being Kira is just 5•/•, normally you would think that's very low but, in the whole world, there are 7.8 Billion humans. So, the chances of Light being Kira is very high as L didn't say that the chances of Light being Kira is 5•/• in Japan, he just said 5•/•.
Edit : I just watched some clips and then realised something, after L had deduced that Kira is in Kanto, he then said 5% and I also realised something, in the Manga, L might have said that he doubted that Light maybe Kira, and the chances are 5% but, actually, L thought Light was Kira 95%, L takes side of the innocent until they are proven guilty so, yeah.

That's ignoring the advantages L has. Light is a high school student with only a small amount of expierence in detective work and stratergy while L has been solving cases since he was a child. L didn't figure out Light was Kira because he was smart, he figured it out because he has had so much expierence analysing people's body language while Light hasn't had nearly the amount of expierence hiding his body language. L had full control of the police and alot of control over the media at the start of the series. L also had the FBI on his side.
L had full control of the police and alot of control over the media at the start of the series. The Lind L Tailor plan wasn't actually that good. It revealed to Kira that L exists, L is chasing him, L has control of the police and the media, L is very smart and that L knows Kira needs a name and a face or at least a face to kill. The thing is, had Light not fallen for it all of these things would still have been revealed to Light in exchange for some information on Light's personality. After the broadcast it would have been easy for Light to figure out L was baiting him to kill Lind L Tailor, since the broadcast appeared in the different areas at different times, something Light would have quickly found out via the internet (even though it wasn't very advanced back then). Once he figured out this it would be easy for him to figure out that L knew Kira needed a name and a face to kill since he revealed the face of someone who may or may not be him and expected him to be able to kill that person. The reason why L used such a risky plan is because it was the best way to humilate Light and stoke his ego as will as winning the trust of the police. So Light and L aren't too different, their ego causes them to make risky but calculated decisions (well killing Lind L Tailor wasn't calculated but beyond that) rather than safer and probably more effective choices.

Not to dunk on this video but isn't that the point of Light as a character? His flawed ego and obsession to be "God". He set in motion everything from killing Lind L Taylor on purpose, because he wanted to get close enough to L to kill him, while playing God at the same time. Yes, the most logical thing to do would be to do nothing. He could've continued to play God and L would never catch him. But he didn't like the idea of L challenging his perspective of "passing righteous judgement". L got under Lights skin because Light is fueled by narcissism and so desperately wanted to one up L - Which he inevitably did. I did enjoy the video nontheless because I love that this show is still being talked about, but nothing new was really said in this video, sorry.

Well to be fair, Light, like many serial killers or megalomaniacs WANTED to be known for his work. He wanted to walk the thin line between getting away with it and taunting you to your face. The way he taunts Ray, the way he taunts Misori, the way he sends L a taunt via note and then to his face, the way he taunts Near. Light is a cocky dude with a giant ego once he gets his hands on the death note. If he wanted to "succeed" and keep using the death note despite Ryuk telling him taht Ryuk WILL write his name down in his own death note he should've just kept killing in silence. So yeah as much as i love some of your analysis for other series, when it comes to death note the truth is: yep if Light was a machievelli/egotistical smug bastard he probably would've won. That whole thing confused me. Killing Lind L. Tailor made sense, because Light is childish and it was an impulse decision. However, after that, he goes completely haywire. Even with the information that he lives in the Kanto region of Japan and he is a student, they’d have to investigate every single student out there. His big mistake was showing his involvement with the police. The weird thing was that before Light knew that L had found out about the police thing, Light says “If he’s as good as they say, he’ll probably suspect my connections to the police.” (Not verbatim), so he knew what he was doing.
I think once he found out Lind L. Tailor wasn’t L, he realized he had lost, and therefore needed to “win” or reclaim his dignity by killing L. L knew how easy Kira was making it for him, which is why L could say so confidently that he knew Kira was childish and hated losing. Light wanted to get close to L so he could eliminate him, and he did it recklessly, exactly how L was counting on it.
L would have been lost without Kira’s impulsiveness, and Light’s impulsiveness shows in every scene, even when he acts composed. Ryuk knows this, too, which is why he tells Light that Raye is tailing him. It’s why Light got so in his head that he killed Raye and his fiancée.
As much as Ryuk says he wouldn’t take sides on L’s killings, Ryuk was never on Light’s side. Ryuk said stuff to freak him out because he knew _that_ would be a worthy show. No, he wasn’t on L’s side either, but Ryuk influenced Light’s decisions so much because he knew it would be interesting.

It seems like L's entire motivation for involving Light on the case was to get him closer in attempt to obtain some proof that it was him and figure out how he was doing it. That lack of evidence was the only thing keeping him from being able to settle it.

of course, the entire L arc was him knowing that light IS kira but being unable to prove it due to evidence lack (though that makes sense because he’s dealing with a supernatural case of a notebook that kills people when you write in it

when light lost his memories, he really cared for his family and had principles.... I still don't understand how one notebook could change that in like 2 3 days
Edit - @Yoroiful replied - I think it started with him thinking of himself as of a "sacrifice". Something only a kind person could actually consider. Like "I have to do this because no one else will" or "I have to save this world by all means necessary" in a genuine way, even if he would be doomed because of it. Over time he clearly became corrupted by the notebook, and the sacrifice turned into something else.

“Light is smart, but not wise.” Thank you for putting into words what I could not. Like, Light was making some of the stupidest, most frustrating decisions that I could think of…like how he STILL decided to kill the FBI agent personally investigating him despite being cleared of suspicion, but decided to one-up himself by killing all the agents, getting the police to back down at the cost of making himself the sole suspect of L. Such killings (initially starting when he fell for L’s bait and killed L Tailor) completely betrayed the code he sought to establish by punishing criminals, and gave away even more important information regarding both himself and his location: heck, L was able to form an entire psychological profile describing Light’s personality to a T, and that FBI agent’s fiancé discovered a vital truth to how Light kills based off simple intuition from how sloppy Light handled it. Then, to swap up the times he kills as SOON as the police write about noticing the pattern? Yet another hint allowing L to narrow down his search.
One of my favorite lines from Erwin perfectly describes Light: “I’m saying you’re making a lot of unnecessary movements.” Over 90% of the actions he took were unnecessary, and led to completely avoidable situations had he simply just done nothing.

I don't think he ever betrayed his ideals except when he's killing his own subordinates(like takada kyomi).
In light's mind anyone that opposes him is evil and to be liquidated, taked down.
That'a not an inconsistent thought with this original morals.
      I mean.....it'a not true lol

    • @6ixlxrd
      @6ixlxrd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

@@absolutenothing7094 “In Light’s mind anyone that opposes him is evil”. That was the mindset of the Light who deteriorated into madness and was ultimately killed, the Light who viewed his own father as weak and himself as a god. The original Light only sought to purge the world of “evil” by cleansing it of criminals, creating a societal utopia where prestigious and upstanding citizens could live out their days in peace and comfort. “Kira” was a symbol of hope and a promise of a better future. But where was the consistency in killing completely innocent, morally upright citizens who sought to bring evil to justice? Where was the consistency in killing a completely innocent widow who sought justice for her husband’s murder?
Arguably, the entire point of Light’s character is that there is no consistency. He’s a self-made hypocrite who punishes evil with evil. Better yet, what determined “evil” in his eyes? Imagine being falsely accused of robbing a store, having your information made public, then being killed in your cell by a kid who wrote your name in his notebook because he was bored.

    • @absolutenothing7094
      @absolutenothing7094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@6ixlxrd first of all to argue with your second point.
it is clearly stated in one of the episodes of death note that light never killed righteous and falsely accused.
he would always thoroughly research the case before he handled the criminal to make sure he never killed innocent people.
he never killed people for self-defense, he never killed people in a dire situation.
"where was the consistency in killing the completely innocent"
it wasn't. it hadn't appeared. and the reason it hadn't appeared was because light never imagined being confornted by police like that and that a lot of innocent people would go against him.
so there was no need for one. there was no need for consistency.
and i'll explain this again, light thinks of himself as a god, as a perfect being.
pinaccle of good, the good itself, that's his ideology, his view of the current world and the world to come.
just like in the bible where god is good by default and if you oppose his will you are ultimately evil, light with his perecption is also good by default and if you oppse him, you are automatically qualified as evil.
you can say that that's wrong,a lie, immoral or arrogant but i don't think you can accuse him of inconsistency or contradicting his own previous ways of thinking.
