- This summary discusses using a trumpet plunger mute properly. It covers buying the right size plunger at a hardware store, carving a hole in it, putting a coin inside, practicing open/closed/halfway positions, notation like + for closed and O for open, creating a 'wah' sound, combining growling and plunger, flutter tonguing vs growling differences, building pressure and releasing for a 'whap' sound, triple tonguing for another effect, and more. The summary aims to provide an in-depth overview of all the main topics discussed in the original content in order to share as much helpful detail as possible.
Chapters
Buying the Right Plunger
Go to a hardware store to buy a fresh plunger about the same diameter as your trumpet bell without overlapping. Avoid super small plungers.
Preparing the Plunger
Carve a hole in the bottom so air can pass through. Put a penny or nickel inside to add a little weight, which affects the sound.
Practicing Plunger Positions
Practice open, closed, and halfway hand positions on the bell to control the sound. Notes go flat in closed position so adjust.
Notation for Plunger
+ symbols mean closed position. O symbols mean open. Drawn wavy lines mean a 'wah' sound.
Combining with Growling
Growling while playing adds expression. It's different from flutter tonguing. Hum any pitch while playing the notated pitch.
Advanced Plunger Techniques
Build up pressure then release for a 'whap'. Triple tongue for a cool rhythmic effect.
Action Items
Go to the hardware store this weekend to buy a plunger mute for trumpet practice
Set aside 10 minutes tomorrow night to carve a hole in the plunger and add a coin inside
Spend 15 minutes each day this week practicing open, closed, and halfway plunger positions
Review plunger notation symbols in the practice book
Try combining growling and plunger mute during Wednesday's practice session
Experiment with advanced techniques like pressure release and triple tonguing during Friday's long practice
Thanks. I never thought of putting a coin in the hole. I'm looking forward to trying it out.
Let me know how you like it.
Really good quality information. Thanks Chris
You’re welcome, Stephen!
That's really cool. Thanks
Sure thing!
god tier video thanks
Thanks Chris!
My pleasure
@@ChrisDavisTrumpet Around here, plungers only seem to come in "too" sizes......too big, and too small. 🤣
I worked with a trumpet player who didn't have a hole in his plunger. He used it to change the notes. So in it don't mean a thing his closed plunger would play a lower note in that second line you had on the screen. King Oliver never used a plunger. Lil Armstrong said he had big hands, but he used a door knob mute in the bell. I think I have 8 plungers !
Great story!
I have a plunger mute without the hole cut out and a aluminum wah wah mute I bought. I hardly use them because it's loud and the neighbors hate my trumpet playing plus we have cats who's hearing is sensitive. I did buy a pixie mute because some jazz musicians with have a pixie mute inside the bell and use the plunger mute. I can't put my hand in front of the bell because my arms are too short. They don't reach unless I play the cornet. I also have an old Country Crock butter tub from the mid 1990s that I use for a wah wah mute that makes my trumpet sound like trombonist Tyree Glenn's trombone when he played with a pixie/plunger mute. He had a pixie mute inside the bell and played with a plunger.
I had every intention to introduce the pixie Mute in this video but left mine at work. Thanks for your comment!
@@ChrisDavisTrumpet You're welcome. Maybe in another video you can talk about the pixie mute. 🎺
Watching from 🇰🇪 eager to learn to play my trumpet
Good luck on the trumpet journey
Greetings Brother! Thank you! Just started the trumpet. I am getting liquid (condensation) coming out of the note button button valves. Is this normal?
I've been playing for over thirty years and I can tell you that it is not normal for condensation to be pouring out of the bottom of the valve casing. The condensation should only be coming out of the water key or spit valve.
@@JazzFan76 OK. I will take the instrument to the craftsmen to check it out. Thank you!
@@mindofnobility7554 you're welcome. Glad to help..😊🎺
Do you have caps on the bottom of your valves? Also, how much valve oil do you use? Sometimes oil leaks from the bottom of you’ve used too much.
@ChrisDavisTrumpet Greetings, Chris! Yes, Sir! There are valve caps screwed in place. Ahhhh, that could be it, too. I will schedule a consultation with you next week. I am a novice level.
