  • I was very fortunate in college to study plunger mute playing with the trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and had an in depth masterclass with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis! Here are some of the tips and tricks I learned about working with the plunger mute that I've used in my own music and during my years with the Count Basie Orchestra.
Shoutout to Kenny Rampton and Hirschman Mutes for making this beautiful KR Indigo Plunger Mute. Grab yours at the link below:

This is much needed in the trumpet community! It's uncommon to see highly expressive plunger playing.

Yes!! Agreed. It’s easy to go on autopilot and not get deep into actual technique

I had the privilege to attend a Clark Terry class where he told the stories of how he got the blue plungers from France (I believe) and gave to Snookie and many others. He also taught Wynton the plunger techniques. I just purchased the K.R. Indigo and hoping to improve MY personal style. Thanks for your thoughts tips and techniques!

Just got my first trumpet, I traded my drone for it, and I immediate started looking up mutes. After less than 30 min i made my first trumpet sound. heh. rad. Took some time cleaning and soaking a prepping it up with lube, still sat for a while and slides a tad dry but It's day on of a shelved trumpet so It'll be a while, but I'm hooked. My dad is 90, loves jazz and I just want to be able to play a few licks for him we listen to lots of the oldies together. Cheers man. subbed. to learn :) something to do with my time, who knows?! I might like it. I like the invention aspect of it to study pitch and tone and just figure out , hey/ this works.
