I stopped playing trumpet 20+ years ago and started playing about a month ago. (Actually I'm playing the Flugelhorn). This channel has helped me SO much. God bless you and keep up the good work. If you have any advice for people starting on the Flugelhorn I would gladly appreciate it.
A well described explanation of free buzzing. I've used this technique for over thirty years. It helps create and maintain good form and enhances a focused sound.
I played trumpet for years, making my way into jazz band and loved it until I had a terrible teacher in high school. I ended up quitting as a freshman, this must have been in 1994. For some reason I have got the hankering to get a trumpet or coronet and play again. I've been playing guitar for quite some time but I just feel the need to pick a horn back up. I found your videos and I can't wait to find a horn! thanks for the great videos!
Good video. Free buzzing can also be viewed as a training exercise for the embouchure. Thus, one can actually "over train" with free buzzing. That's why it is important to be careful in using it because it can adversely affect the tone and endurance while playing the mouthpiece or horn. However, when used correctly, free buzzing can be of ENORMOUS benefit in terms of ensuring proper form and enhancing endurance and flexibility.
I have found that 'free buzzing' can also be beneficial to building strength. I once was restarting trumpet and used free buzzing while I drove or even at work; and it definitely helped build strength. On the down side for me: "too much" free buzzing to playing ratio started to negatively effect my tone. hope this helps, Mike
Very smart and clever sentence. About the instrument as amplifier, my teacher always was repeating that every time. Salutes from Santa Fe, Argentina. Go on Chris!
I needed this vid. I’ve been playing in the red for a while and all the instructors told me get all the red in the cup. I did it and there was either no sound, a double buzz, or just non trumpet sounds 😂 One teacher recommended mouthpiece buzzing and lip buzzing. I have a problem getting a good tone out of it though. Its usually scratchy and really low. So whenever I play on my horn, I get a double buzz and its hard to maintain notes
That was most interesting and helpful Chris, thank you. Funnily enough my wife and I were talking about actors' vocal warm up exercises just this morning and it strikes that there might be a little analogy here. Actors don't speak on stage quite the way that they do with the exercises but all those exaggerated warm ups prepare for performance. Free buzzing is not the way we actually play the instrument but perhaps an 'exaggerated' version which helps the embouchure settle into the proper form. Oh well, it's just a thought from a beginner. I'm definitely going to try it as part of my warm up today and the rest of this week. Cheers mate and thanks again.
Damn it! It worked! I'm very very new at brass instruments (trombone) and I struggle with getting a consistent note. I'll try to practice that regularly.
I had a (great) teacher who told me to free buzz because it's harder to do than playing the trumpet. Although implied, I appreciate you explaining why that is and how it's not the same thing 👍
Great channel, Chris! Love it! I had never free buzzed but was able to do it right away. Not consistently or perfect, but I can do it! Maybe you explained and demonstrated better than your two teachers. Also, when you do it the sound I hear is like a bee or when a mosquito buzzes in your ear. Same sound. Lol
Also, now after working on this for only a few minutes, I can feel the muscles of the front of my face are engaged and feel like I did a little mini face workout. Very cool. I can tell this is gonna be good! It’s like striking gold!
I have a question. My school starts in a few weeks and i haven’t practiced much over summer. I picked up my trumpet a few days ago and could barely play because a corner of my lips was just leaking air and wouldn’t stop. I don’t know how to stop this and was wondering you could help before my school starts.
Very helpful. Been buzzing for about 3 years now. Saw a clip by Charlie Porter. For me I had to park my tounge behind my front bottom teeth. That directed the air to my apature.
This is the problem the trumpet is NOT an amplifier.. The problem is that people still think to create a vibration on your lip and is going to be amplified with the trumpet. That’s definitely wrong. This is not the physics of any brass instrument.. if you would understand this, you would never spend time for buzzing because this not necessary. The real physic of a trumpet is to activate a standing wave . This has nothing to do with fill up the instrument or any thoughts in kind of these.. The trumpet which is a simply tube gives you a feedback, and that’s why the sound starts.(activating molecular structure of the tube) It won’t matter if you think different physic is physic.. And I wanna mention this should be constructive critique.🎺❤️👋😊
Did you watch the whole video? Yeah we know this is true. We saw John Haubaugh’s video and we understand these things. Something else that is also true . . . There are people that DO benefit from buzzing in its various forms and there are those who don’t. Every video isn’t created for every person because that is impossible. Take what you need and leave what you don’t need. Consult with your own teacher, is what I tell people about tips received online. Every word isn’t literal. Some are figurative. And the trumpet is an amplifier. If there is tension in the body, that is heard in the sound. If the player is a joyful person, that is heard in the sound. If they are cynical, that can be heard as well. One trumpet played by two different people will sound different according to who is playing it because the trumpet Amplifies what the player puts into it.
This is totally right. When I buzz lips or mouthpiece it is not the way I actually make a sound on my trumpet like he says. However I think there are benefits from lip, mouthpiece and leadpipe buzzing. I think it is important to know how much you use them (like he says)

You wouldn’t consider trumpet and flugelhorn as a similar concept at least?

Thanks, Mark, for this comment! I may use these words in my teaching from now on. Exaggerated version. 🤔🙌🏾

Sure thing. Trumpet players need to know and understand.
Just watching it now. This is great. Thanks for posting it.
All the best,
Richard
Certainly, happy to help. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment.
Thank u for this vid. Super informative

Awesome! Thanks, Chris!
Any time!
I get worried because my free buzzing sucks. But a i want to improve my sound and high notes. Currently having issues to have a useful high E.
Thanks a lot😊❤
You're welcome 😊

On my way sir, got a buzz!

Thanks Mark! What you’ve described is called K-Modified tonguing (also known as anchor tonguing). It’s the superior way in my opinion.
Isometric tension over time can destroy tone production.
Certainly. This is why balance is essential.
