Yu Yu is just Goat, and the fact that Togashi also wrote HunterxHunter says a lot. Kuwabara being held back at the funeral was real, also everyone cried when grandma died. And every shonen wants to have a tournament arc as good as the dark tournament.

I actually like Yu Yu Hakusho more. Hunter x Hunter is so different that it felt like a different person made it. For me, it was in a bad way. It felt like He stepped out of his own style. I know people like it, though it just seemed like the art style in Hunter x Hunter was the opposite of what he already established himself to be as an artist. If people like it, that's cool, but I don't think it's his true style.
And would argue that Dragon Balls the only exception since they kind of invented the idea of tournaments.

No lie Yu Yu Hakusho is just becomes your Number One anime upon discovery. It's just that dam good without being to cheesy and doesn't need fanservice and other meaningless whatnot to make it.
The character developments of this show, backstories, and the complexity of the Antagonists Toguro & Sensui makes this anime one of the GOATs 🐐💯

My cousin bought a yu yu hakusho boxset imported from Japan when i was very young. There were no subtitles so we understood nothing but the art, character desgin and the fight scenes always stuck with me growing up, i didnt understand a damn thing but it instantly hooked me and i fell in love with it.
When i finally got to watch this anime when i was 12 my grandmother had just gotten diagnosed with cancer, this anime literally got me out of one of the darkest times of my life by giving me something to smile at and giving me something to look forward to after school.
This will always be my favorite anime, it has been with me for as long as i can remember.

Thank you for the comment on subbed vs dubbed. I usually recommend sub for every anime, except for Yu Yu Hakusho. The dubbed actors did such a great job bringing the characters to life, and Yusuke’s voice actor better fits that delinquent background that Yusuke has
I'm rewatching yu yu Hakusho. I used to watch it as a kid but never finished. I'm on about episode 70. It's my favorite anime hands down now. I love it. It's not perfect, but I love the animation. Gonna finish. Love it!!!!!

My favorite anime to this day. Thoughts:
- I think Botan rides around on an oar, as she takes people across the River Styx. Now Styx is a Greek mythology thing, but I am guessing that they've got something similar in Japanese folklore.
- I am pretty sure that "Kuwabara" means "mulberry", so I wonder how that speech of Kuwabara's went in the original Japanese.
- It's interesting to me that, not only is Yusuke an early example of a street punk in anime, he was also lonely at the start of things. Like, normally the tough guy has friends or at least sidekicks; Yusuke really didn't, because he'd made a mess of his life (not entirely his fault). That's unusual.
- Yusuke's mom was like 15 when she had him, so presumably Yusuke is a poor kid living on government assistance. That too is an unlikely starting point.
- The Funimation dub is a thing of beauty. The first episode has a little clunky dialogue in places, but by the second episode they'd really nailed it. I think they made the wise decision to not translate the dialogue exactly, so much as capture the basic message but make it sound natural and even funny where appropriate.
- I still think about something Genkai told Yusuke after he'd defeated Sensui: everyone has something they can protect or destroy, and Yusuke's question at that moment was, will he be the person who protects the world or destroys it. And the thing is, the choice of protect vs destroy is open to all of us. When you see things in terms of protect vs destroy, it changes your outlook.

Imma just spiel analysis/interpretation of this anime, as it's my favorite. Spoilers below.
The villains Toguro and later all represent possible futures/extremes for Yusuke, all of whom are suicidal. Toguro, like Yusuke, loves fighting. Toguro gave up all relationships in order to not feel pain, which is similar to how Yusuke was in episode 1. In pursuit of power in order to not be harmed again, Toguro made his wish to become a demon. Yusuke could forsake his bonds to become like Toguro. If course Yusuke instead embraces them under Genkai's guidance and becomes strong by reconciling his own emotional turmoil, instead of running from trauma and despair like Toguro did. If Toguro could defeat Yusuke, representing Genkai's choice and legacy, then that would validate his decision, if he loses, he would punish himself with death and afterlife torment as deep down he knew he was wrong, but needed to be proven wrong.
Sensui's issues were related to the system, i.e. the spirit world, and working/living on it. He is the fate if Yusuke remained a spirit detective. Sensui's got chewed out by the system and was manipulated to do horrible, unforgivable things, leading to his suicidal quest to be killed by a greater demon. Yusuke responds by rejecting Koenma and his spirit detective role, and kicking Sensui's ass for its own merit.
Finally, Raijin is a man who has strong relations, has power, and is at the top of any system he could be a member as a king. Yet, he too wanted to die. In the anime, it's implied Yusuke was long outlive Kuwabara and Keiko. Raijin could not livenwith the pain of loss. Will Yusuke be able to? Why does Yusuke fight in that arc? What is his answer to the existential crisis Raijin faced? ........ He doesn't have one. He literally just doesn't think about it and decides to enjoy the time he has left with his human friends and worry about things later. And the fact there's no answer to this for a guy with a low-key death wish (I could extend my comment to say how...), Is kinda fascinating but fucked up. And I love it.
I consider it to be the greatest animated series overall

YYH’s influence cannot be underestimated. If Dragon Ball helped to make Shonen, YYH helped to perfect it.
Rather than just tough guys beating the other with a bigger power with only slight variations of techniques that everyone literally copies at one point; YYH helps to solidify the strategic elements and have everyone fight uniquely so it leads to more engaging fights.
yusuke has his hands in his pockets because he's a punk. im not insulting him, thats his character. having your hands in your pockets is rude in most cultures.

I won't say Yu Yu Hakusho is underrated, it's just that it gets overshadowed by Hunter X Hunter, Personally I like Yu Yu Hakusho better.
This anime is underrated. The music, the animation, the story, and the artstyle create an anime so good, it still leaves an impact on me how good it is. I also appreciate there's a boxed set now that includes the two 2018 OVAs 'cause this anime is gold.
I really have a special place in my heart for old anime animation, along with new but it's not as special. Also this has gotta be the best anime of all time, to not boring characters like kurama just not only being a human originally but a demon. Also another reason why it's my favorite is just because of the amount of trash talking and bitch slapping and not afraid to say anything.

I'm not a "subs" guy, I know Japanese, but these are two anime where I really prefer the English version best.

I think the show is received exactly how it should be. Those who have seen it think it’s great, it’s just being lost to time. Nowadays, a lot of newer mainstream anime watchers don’t go back to 80s/90s anime. A part of me wants YYH to have a remake with the same fidelity as shows such as Demon Slayer, but there’s a “charm” that comes with the 90s aesthetic and I wouldn’t want to lose that since charm is one of the things that carries Yu Yu besides it’s wonderful characters and story.
It would work if they did make it with the same fidelity of Demon Slayer while at the same time capturing the 80s and 90s Aesthetics.

i m here for YUYU , Nowadays, a lot of works are inspired by ripping off YuYu. But a lot of them aren't as good as they could be.
I get the sense that you want to experiment with some new formats, and I like that direction, but it would be the type of content that would require more volume and design.

This is my Favorite anime bro you are spitting facts. The emotional weight of the series is something only top tier anime can replicate and this may sound corny but the lesson’s thought in this anime really played a part in forming my character and personality growing up and I still replicate Yuske to this day.

Only thing Ichigo and Yusuke have in common is that they end up fighting for the greater good and the safety off others, no big deal, Goku does that too, and Astroboy, etc. No way in hell Yusuke and Ichigo are something alike in any other department, their morals, attitude, and development is way different from one to another, and that is because of the character writing. Ppl who trash Kubo or Togashi really deserve their eyeballs kicked, in hope their vision s cleared up so they DO actually SEE the differences for themselves.

I dont think its underrated. Its just that its an old anime. New anime fans prefed to watch whats new and hip. And thats not necessarily bad. One day i bet even Naruto and One Piece or whatever is cool now will be forgotten or slept on in the future.

How is it underrated? It's constantly brought up as a Hall of Fame Shonen... It's listed with DBZ and Sailor Moon as the forefathers of the US anime boom.

So many kids these days already watched and fucks with Hunter x Hunter. It's crazy how many of them don't also know he made this absolutely *GOATED* series almost a decade before HxH. Its fucked up Hulu had the whole show and then dropped two seasons so they end right before Hiei vs Bui. Thankfully Crunchyroll got it back and you a real one if you got the series on your shelf

What? No, it's not. Yu Yu Hakusho was and still is massively popular, it's just older now. These newer anime fans keep on thinking that anything older is underrated. A few weeks ago, I saw a video trying to make this same case for FMAB! Yu Yu Hakusho was an iconic part of the golden age of Toonami and Adult Swim.

Yu yu is still in my top 3 fr. Along with ruroni kenshin. Two shining examples where the dub is better than the sub. Honestly I think all the og anime’s have that common theme, the dubs are better than the subs.
With Ruroni Kenshin there are 2 dubs and one is horrible. The one that calls Ms Kauru (Corrin) is just bad

4:02- and the designs actually evolve with the characters. They start off with a short of colorful 80s goofy style but the color palette gets more realistic and the designs get sleeker with a 90s style.
This series inspired me at the end with Yusuke fought Yomi, I was with Hokushin I was crying at the end of that fight. Every fight in this series was spectacular whether it be the greatest rematch of this and last century Yusuke vs Sensui or one of the greatest one sided beat down with Zeru vs Hiei, this series from characters, to combat, to animation, to even the godly ost it was perfect. I felt the anime came at the perfect time
