Wow Dave Harris, I know exactly what you mean. I was in the Navy in 1981 and I experienced exactly what your video shows. I hated the Navy but I did make some great friends when I was in. It was a good experience for me but no way I wanted to do this for more than 4 years. Anyone who can live this kinda life for 20 years deserves a lifetime pension IMO. It is a hard life for sure. Thanks for your video. Your video shows exactly what living aboard a naval combat ship is like.
I served 22.5 years in the Navy and 19.5 years were spent onboard ships. None of my ships were in this condition! How in the world would the U.S. Navy allow these conditions? Why would this to be uploaded to TH-cam? Ridiculous!
Brother you made the best decision in your life serving in the United States navy this country will always respect you. My life as a ex navy veteran has been one success after another. You can't see it now but wait until you get that honorable discharge you'll see
Thank you for your service shipmate. I'm a retired Chief Boatswains Mate. I would not ever allow my sailors to live in those conditions. I was in their berthing compartments everyday making sure the heads and berthing area was immaculate. If there was a stopped up, Toilet I'd have my engineering chief counterparts getting it straight. As far as cleanliness, my sailors were responsible for that and I ensured those heads and showers remained spotless. How could your XO allow those conditions. I think the Navy of today is not the same Navy I served. Your Chief should have been demoted!
Damn, that is the most unsat command I've ever seen. I feel bad for you all having to deal with those conditions. I was fortunate enough to be in a 21 man berthing onboard USS Supply AOE-6 during her commissioning days,so everything was still new in the mid 1990's. Seeing the berthing and head in that condition makes gas station bathrooms look nice.I hope you have it better at your next command,Shipmate.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Gunner's Mate. Thank you,but no need for thanks. Rather, thank you for standing watch today. "The only easy day was yesterday." Don't get me wrong,I still miss the Navy life and have since I walked down that gangplank one last time, but a clean command and quarters are paramount to morale. Food and women come next. 24 years later,I still have dreams I'm back in. It never leaves you.
I'm writing a novel with a huge navy ship. I have some questions about said type of ship and other things and actions involved (within the plot), if anyone's interested in discussing.
What’s the point in having so many people on board a ship? In my mind you only need like idk 100 people to drive the ship and clean it etc. why is there like 1000-1500 people on a ship?
because they need to be able to give people time off to sleep, and if multiple people with the same job were to get sick then they would be undermanned. they have people working at all hours of the day
I was on an ammunition ship in 1973 we had a crew of 350 enlisted and 50(I believe) officers. You have to remember, there are so many jobs to do onboard ship. Food services such as cooks, bakers, and such, Electricians, Gunners, weapons, radar, Laundrymen, Communications, Medical, Engineers, Engine, Boatswains mates, clerks, Payroll, and many more, Navy ships for the most part are self sufficient and are like a town or city, Most jobs run 24 hours a day, (not all) and some sleep while others work, there is always, chipping, painting, basic repair and preventive maintenance going on....Plus ontop of that when at sea, we stood watch besides our regular jobs.
Back in the 80s and 90s, we had compartment cleaners, and we had our personal areas cleaned. These areas look terrible. Even the MSs have a clean berthing areas.
The Official Dave Harris I feel like the top beds need some type of fence that can be pulled up or down to keep people from falling., Especially if the ship is moving a lot. Just a thought.
Not all ships get that much storage space it all differentiates on CVN-69 Dwight d Eisenhower we have a coffin rack and a stand up locker. On the CVN 75 Harry s Truman they have racks that have nobody in the top racks normally empty for your sea bag. That’s the air department berthing though so it all differentiates and they all look different as well.
Man, that compartment looked tore up. Don’t wanna make any assumptions since I don’t know the details of what was going on that particular day, but damn! Anyway as far as falling out of the top rack. I remember my father was a bit of a roller and he went into the bone yard and took out a couple of middle seat seat belts from a bunch of junked cars. Before that he used two belts to hold himself into the rack
Hell nah they need to upgrade that shit big time !can you do a video on what your job is for 14 hours and what is the point of being on a ship for the navy or what is your mission for 8 months ...
I don't like dirty shower walls and I hate seeing or using backed up toilets and heaven forbid if backed up toilet waste were to hit the floor or even touch my skin. I would be pissed as hell.
Gerrod Brown that what it feels like. You get use to it tho. You might get some navy seal that will catch a ride on the ship but they won’t stay the whole deployment it just depends what their mission is.
1:46 I noticed the job symbols on the paper. Do different rates get there own rooms or room together in a different group? Also how the internet on the ship? (If there is any)
Ugla yes each rate has its on berthing, but sometimes you might have a couple rates mixed in together. Yes ships have Internet, but it’s not the fastest and there’s a lot of restrictions to some sites.
About to enlist in the Navy (hoping for AC!). Now, I'm not throwing shade, but I would think that Navy leadership wouldn't allow THAT kind of uncleanliness to fly in the service. I'm not Mr. Clean over here, but if it's to the point where feces-infested water spills into the SHOWER AREA . . . that's a problem. I was homeless this past year, and even the shelters had enough sense to do that much. To stop toilet water from forming puddles all over the place. Are you at liberty to share what ship this is? I appreciate the video either way. Definitely a real video without frills.
Getting Better I get what your saying but when I did this video it was in the middle of the day when everyone was working it’s not always like this but I do wanted you guys to see the ship no sugar coating. We could do a little better with cleanliness it’s just be so much going on when we’re out in the waters it takes time. This is a LPD class ship I won’t put the name out tho.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 LPD? I might not be on it then seeing as how ACs are on bigger crafts (for the obvious reason). I'm happy to watch though. Keep showing more of the ship. If I end up going ship duty first instead of shore, I was hoping to go on the new Ford supercarrier they're working on. Will you be uploading more content?
thank god for this video. my recruiter is about to be mad. had to cancel my wednesday appt at MEPS with him after seeing this...bout to go holla at the Air Force...put my 71 asvab score to better use....plus im 37, i cant live like dat
The CO of that ship should be relieved immediately. I was on a Gearing Class Destroyer in the mid 60's and we never had poop sloshing all over the place. Anything out of order was repaired/replaced same day. And the showers are disgusting. Does anyone ever clean them? The bunks are a mess. This ship is a disgrace. Jesus Christ, does anyone ever inspect this place?
There are pros and cons when it comes to joining the Navy. When one goes into a Navy recruiters office for the first time, the recruiter will mainly tell you the pros, and try to avoid telling you the cons as much as possible. But some recruiters might caution you if you get too excited. Having been in the Navy myself, I learned of what it may be that might drive some to go UA, or as far as suicide. Working hours on a Navy ship can be extremely long, especially when you are out at sea, or as some call it, under way. A lot of brochures may tell you that you can puck any job you want, but the guarantee is the technical, or "A" school that might train you for that job, but once you finish your school, you may end up wherever they need you, which could be a totally different job, one that you might really hate, and although most sailors do get to jot down their choices of where they would like to be stationed on a "Dream Sheet", very few might be lucky enough to get one of their choices, but again, most will be sent to wherever they are needed, even if it was not one of the choices they put on their Dream Sheet.
I've seen prison cells that are more luxurious. Seriously, you guys are putting yourselves at risk defending this country and THAT'S the kind of treatment you get?? I am SO glad I didn't sign up for the Navy scholarship program they offered at my school. I would've made a HUGE mistake!! I make pretty good money as a male entertainer, flashing my body for cash. So far it's getting me through college!

I'm having 2nd thoughts joining the navy, but here is the thing I'm not that talkative and outgoing. I'm aware of the basic fundamentals and that is I have to obey my higher ranks, do what I'm told to do. I'm aware that I have to be presentable with everybody and say good morning here and there, but I'm not a comedian I dont have over a million jokes store in my head where I'm going to keep a lively atmosphere, so with that being said you think I will have trouble blending in and should not join, or you think I'm still good to join?
I was in a berthing compartment with 68 people on a carrier. The second class PO would have shit purple bricks if we ever had a sleeping area as unkept as this one..I guess the Navy really is going down hill
I’ve lived in 2 berthings.. 15th meu and 31st meu.. the 31st meu it was some of the nastiest conditions I’ve seen. I never felt clean in that berthing.
I served aboard ship in the 60's and what this man shows would never be accepted on my ship. This ship is an unkept ship. One of the problems with todays ships are the smaller crews with a lot of automated equipment. That also means they don't have enough people for maintenance and compartment cleaning.
Damn that L shape rack.... i didnt have those when i was on the FFG, CG, and DDG, but the LCC rack and heads were pretty ok as far as standard goes, but still not a place for normal peeps toilets still dont work as they should, in the O club their living standards are way better then of lower enlisted... the head looks about right except we have metal toilets that never work.
we have the same problem with showers and toilets on the ship. toilets are vacuum and often clogged. just as often the scuppers are clogged and the water is ankle-deep on the deck. The rooms themselves are also quite dirty. although we have a cleaning sailor

Hi , I’m still in high school and I joined a whole year before I graduate , and I am so worried that I picked a horrible job which is a CS. I’ve been hearing so much negative 😢 I ship to basic June 3. About a week after graduation lol
Curlisha Robinson I personally don’t like being a cook but that’s my opinion it’s different for everyone. If you check out my other videos I go over the pros and cons of being a CS.
With jobs, do the job that you’d like to do so if you like cooking, be a cs, everyone recommends you do a job that can transfer over in the civilian world, but if you’re miserable doing it then it doesn’t matter what job transfers in the civilian world, for example ht can be plumbers when they get out, but if you hate cleaning crap, then why would you want to be a plumber in the civilian world? Hm don’t transfer over in the civilian world, I had to go to school to get my nursing degree after I got out, but I loved being an hm. Don’t worry about the bs, every job in the military has bullshit you’ll deal with, just do what you want to do
You will do alright if you just say "Yes Sir" and do what you are told. Do the best you can at WHATEVER and keep your eye out for any opportunity to improve yourself and help your supervisor look good. The same goes for any job in civilian life. Always hold YOURSELF to a high standard. When you get out, use the GI Bill for school. Good luck and God Speed. (US Navy CTT2 1967-1971)
Mike H I agree with most of what you say, but do not say “yes sir/ ma’am” unless they’re officers. They now require you to call them by rank. Also, don’t make your supervisor look good, make yourself look good in front of your supervisor. I’ve seen it when I was in, being passed from promotion while my supervisor just used what I did on his brag sheet and evals.
This is some real stuff. Actually looks more spacious than some of the bethings I saw on carrier ships. Just curious, do you enjoy life on board a ship? Do people get seasick much and how's the food/gyms and stuff?
While im on the ship i hate it, but some things i do miss about living on board. I still get sea sick when the seas get too rough a lot of the newer sailor get sick. You start to get use to it after a while.

Bro can you futher explain this for me because I've been getting told that of you're an E4 or above on a ship you don't have to live in the berthing if the ship is docked
31 navy no matter what rank you are your are it is not mandatory to live on the ship when it is docked, but everyone is assigned a rack no matter what. You can be a E1 and live out in town or the barracks as long as you can afford it or are assigned a barracks room. Does that answer your question?
Jona M you can message them on Facebook or through email everyday as long as the internet is up. As far as calling home it depends if your office has a land line phone to call home if so you can call whenever if not you will have to use the pay phones to call home and it $20 a card then you call call once a week depending how long the line is.

I served 22.5 years in the Navy and 19.5 years were spent onboard ships. None of my ships were in this condition! How in the world would the U.S. Navy allow these conditions? Why would this to be uploaded to TH-cam? Ridiculous!

thank you for your service how many years did you do?
Thank you for your service shipmate. I'm a retired Chief Boatswains Mate. I would not ever allow my sailors to live in those conditions. I was in their berthing compartments everyday making sure the heads and berthing area was immaculate. If there was a stopped up, Toilet I'd have my engineering chief counterparts getting it straight. As far as cleanliness, my sailors were responsible for that and I ensured those heads and showers remained spotless. How could your XO allow those conditions. I think the Navy of today is not the same Navy I served. Your Chief should have been demoted!
You think that bathroom would be spotless from what the stories the old timers tell i guess this new generation has let standards fall its a shame.
Fat Ass yeah it ain’t like the old days the sailors now are soft and have no pride!!
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 I'll have to agree with that. What a shit hole.
Damn, that is the most unsat command I've ever seen. I feel bad for you all having to deal with those conditions. I was fortunate enough to be in a 21 man berthing onboard USS Supply AOE-6 during her commissioning days,so everything was still new in the mid 1990's. Seeing the berthing and head in that condition makes gas station bathrooms look nice.I hope you have it better at your next command,Shipmate.

the supply was not all that clean either lol
I'm writing a novel with a huge navy ship. I have some questions about said type of ship and other things and actions involved (within the plot), if anyone's interested in discussing.
What’s the point in having so many people on board a ship? In my mind you only need like idk 100 people to drive the ship and clean it etc. why is there like 1000-1500 people on a ship?
because they need to be able to give people time off to sleep, and if multiple people with the same job were to get sick then they would be undermanned. they have people working at all hours of the day
I LL give you less than week of running an LPD with 100 people for crew before the ship sinks .
When you sleep at night does the ships provide Air Conditioning. I need AC to sleep lol
Yes they have AC the berthing can get pretty cold.
The Official Dave Harris I feel like the top beds need some type of fence that can be pulled up or down to keep people from falling., Especially if the ship is moving a lot. Just a thought.
NS R they should but the ship doesn’t rock that much probably on smaller ships. It’s still a long way up if you fall off in your sleep.
Not all ships get that much storage space it all differentiates on CVN-69 Dwight d Eisenhower we have a coffin rack and a stand up locker. On the CVN 75 Harry s Truman they have racks that have nobody in the top racks normally empty for your sea bag. That’s the air department berthing though so it all differentiates and they all look different as well.
king_jojo21 oh ok good to know!!
I’m assuming you set an alarm to wake up when you have to. So, How do you wake up at a certain time without waking up everybody in the berthing?
Jadyn Perrotta yes most people use their cell phone as a alarm.
The ship calls Reveille every morning at 0600 to wake everyone up. It’s pretty much like someone telling us to wake up over the
Intercom.
I did my 4 years 2002-2006, USS Tarawa, did 2 deployments. You captured the vibe perfectly lmao
That’s cool of your father!!
Hell nah they need to upgrade that shit big time !can you do a video on what your job is for 14 hours and what is the point of being on a ship for the navy or what is your mission for 8 months ...
Good video, I wish we had L racks😂

I remember taking a shower and the ship was rocking and I would bump into the walls🤢🤮
Almost sounds close to jail 🔗... But I'm up for the challenge. Nothing is perfect. Do NAVY SEALS have to ride in the ships too???
Gerrod Brown that what it feels like. You get use to it tho. You might get some navy seal that will catch a ride on the ship but they won’t stay the whole deployment it just depends what their mission is.
Yeah I'm very adaptable I'm just shooting for something that's going take some studying before I get in the navy.
Gerrod Brown do you kinda have a idea of what you might want to do?
Yes sir I kinda have a few thou. From Rescue swimmer and Driver to SARC and a Navy Seal.
Gerrod Brown oh shit that’s wassup go hard or go home..lol
1:46 I noticed the job symbols on the paper. Do different rates get there own rooms or room together in a different group? Also how the internet on the ship? (If there is any)

OldSalt lol.. I just got it at a bad time. I guess it’s a new navy.
Yeah I feel like I’m in prison sometimes. A floating prison. Don’t drop the soap!!

I served aboard ship in the 60's and what this man shows would never be accepted on my ship. This ship is an unkept ship.
Don’t worry about the bs, every job in the military has bullshit you’ll deal with, just do what you want to do
Julie Riddick wise words💯
