    Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I'd also like to thank the US Navy Public Affairs Officers who helped coordinate this. After clearing the video for OPSEC, they did not limit my creativity in anyway whatsoever. I decided to make a video about the Command Structure on the submarine so we had a better foundation moving forward in the Submarine Deep Dive. This video is just the beginning! I have some incredible things to show you as a part of the deep dive. Please consider subscribing for those. I'm most grateful to people who go the extra mile and support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. It's a super big deal because it brings stability to Smarter Every Day in ways that's hard to describe. In this case, I had to buy a plane ticket to the Arctic on relatively short notice. If you'd like to become a Patron, I'd greatly appreciate it. The link is here: www.patreon.com/smartereveryday

    I am a Veteran of the "cold war " Submarine Service.
    I absolutely love the fact that the NAVY let you have such 'plain english' access to the most powerful weapon of all military services... Submarine People!
    I am honored by willingness to explain and teach others, about our NAVY's "Silent Service"!
    Science is huge onboard. But, the People... will forever be Brothers and Sisters, when they become "Qualified on Submarines".
    I cannot wait to see your next video! Thank you, Dustin.

    Thank you for the videos. I am an ex-submariner, attached to the very first Los Angeles class submarine, SSN688 USS Los Angeles based out of Pearl Harbor. I left the Navy around 2000. I can show my kids your videos so they get a look at what my world was like 20 years ago. I was at first a “Radioman” in the Navigation unit, but they merged all of Nav and Radio jobs into one rate called Electronics Tech. I remember having a flooding event while at sea. I remember the best food in the US military. I remember popping the hatch in the middle of 3 Hawaiian Islands for a “Swimming Call”. I remember standing deck watch at port in Pearl thinking about all the American and Japanese who lost their lives there. It was an amazing time of my life. Keep up what you’re doing. You are truly making our youth smarter everyday. 👍👍

    as the parent of two young men in the Navy it is greatly appreciated when we can get a greater understanding of what our men and women in uniform are getting themselves into. One of my Sons is at Naval nuclear school right now to learn how to operate a reactor on a sub, so this helps me understand what his life is going to be like when he is away and unable to share with those who worry about them.

      Your son is training to be what I was, more than half a century ago - a submarine nuclear reactor operator. Even today I try to keep up through these vids with how the modern generation is working out. Obliviously, some of the systems and missions have changed over the years, but the people part remains the same and is well represented in this video.
      Your son will be challenged, but assuming he gets though nuke school, sub school and earns his dolphins aboard his first boat, he (and you!) will have the satisfaction of knowing he is the 'best of the best' in service to his country. He will also have the self-confidence to handle anything he faces in the civilian world, once he leaves the Navy.

      She's not there because they see him as a potential threat. Think about what he's doing here, he's interacting with dozens of people and moving throughout multiple levels and rooms within a nuclear submarine. There's all sorts of OPSEC issues involved with this. One of the submariners could easily slip up and say something they weren't supposed to, or Destin could film something he wasn't supposed to, or he could be in the vicinity of someone talking about something that they don't want us to hear. She is really the second line of defense for all of this, and the individual OPSEC training that each submariner has taken would be the first line of defense. By the time the Navy gets a hold of the video to review it for OPSEC, there should be little to nothing that they have to cut out before the video is released. All of these layers eliminates or dramatically reduces the potential for human error.

    • @olaruud9366
      @olaruud9366 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Probably helps in other ways than what are obvious. I bet submariners are naturally skeptical of strangers roaming around their top secret boat, the presense of someone that has full control of what is within opsec limits will assure the crew that its ok to show and tell stuff without having to double check constantly.

      As a side note; as far as Nuclear "weapons" go, I have always been a fan of Atomic Annie; aka the US military's M65 atomic cannon. There is just something crazy awesome about the concept of an artillery piece where the people would load it, and then run for cover before remotely setting it off. It makes me wonder how much crazy stuff we could have developed nowadays if society wasn't so concerned about "safety" and making absolutely sure no one could "accidentally" hurt themselves, due to their own stupidity. As a GA pilot with acrophobia before I flew (which helped quite a bit) being in the tight quarters I know a sub has, would take a claustrophobic individual some doing to get used to! Our great respect and thanks for their service down below! Just being under the ice could be quite an ordeal but it's astonishing how a sub can burst up through the ice! I'm sure the crew is so busy, that they have little time to be concerned with tight quarters, but I would still think it would take some mental adjustments!
    I wondered how the sub knows where the ice is the thinnest so they COULD break through it, but today, there are sensors on EVERYTHING so I'm sure they know! We thank the crew of the sub for their service and thank you for your video!

      Just as a sub has a fathometer (a type of downward-sensing sonar) to measure depth under the keel, they also have upward sensing sonar to sense the depth of ice below the sea surface, and that system is to find 'leads' or polynas' (areas of thinner ice pack) that can be surfaced through. - One-time nuclear submariner here who has BTDT. BTW, I'd always wanted to fly, and much later in life soloed and earned my private pilot's license. I found the learning process for that to be akin to getting qualified in submarines!

      I have been a "water-baby" since my earliest years and enjoy all instances of being in the water and lived right by the ocean for many years. I really enjoyed SCUBA diving and dived in Monterey Bay, CA area a lot. BUT, it's silly I know, but I was afraid to go out off shore very far because I KNEW about the drop-off into the Monterey Trench and I can't explain it, but I was nervous to get out over that while in the water! Do they get a running speed and crash into it, or would that wreck the part of the sub that breaks through, I guess its called the "sail" -- must be quite strong! And is it more difficult to keep the sub warm at 30 below zero than at however cold the ocean is where you travel; I suppose there is sensor on the outside of the sub somewhere telling you what the water temp is -- correct? I was expecting to see close quarters but there is a bit more room than I expected in some areas! Thanks for your input.

Then the crew breaks out ice axes, saws, and snow shovels to dig their way out of the boat!

    A few comments from a former submarine officer. The captain’s comments about under ice operations can not be emphasized enough. You have an inherently dangerous activity of operating a ship underwater and then you put it under ice. Under ice is not were you want to be. I was surprised to hear the captain spends significant time in the chiefs quarters. That is highly unusual. Training is a constant. You are either being trained or training someone else. Think about the workplace you work at and imagine if every person who worked there changed jobs about every 3-4 years and someone new came in. I don’t know about the statement that everyone loves their job, but I will say my experience was that overall they were a great group of guys (women weren’t on subs when I was in) and I was always amazed how well we generally got along. It’s hard work and a lot of hours. We hear about the basketball players that are “in the bubble” and how “tough” this is for them. The personnel serving on board our boats as you read this are really the ones in the bubble - and we don’t pay them millions of dollars to do it.

      It was a sub doing surveillance off the coast of Japan and they noticed that the train went by same time everyday. So the commander waited till nightfall and sent men with the boats scuttle charges to rig the bridge. Next day boom train went swimming. All of us former submariners know the story. Aircraft carriers may take all the glory from ww2 but subs inflicted over half the supply losses for the Japanese. It was an honor and a privilege to serve aboard a submarine one I’ll definitely never forget.

    @Altobrun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +92

    I work in hydrography so it was interesting to see the MIT scientists onboard the sub. The device at 13:15 that the camera is strapped to is known as an SVP or sound velocity profiler. It makes a lot of sense that submarines in the arctic would need to use one, even though I had never really thought about it. Basically the SVP checks what the local speed of sound is. Which is really important because you have an interaction between frozen fresh water and liquid salt water. Both the salinity and temperature of the water impacts the speed of sounds in a not-insignificant manner so if you use the wrong salinity, the sonar on a sub will return a surface that may be metres off its actual position
    because it was doing all of the positional measurements using an incorrect speed of sound.

      *I think what you said got too complicated while I was reading.*

    • @lachyt5247
      @lachyt5247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@theotherside931 No it is definitely not constant. The speed of sound changes significantly throughout the watercolumn, we use XBT probes and other methods to measure the sound velocity profile of the column and use the specific features to achieve certain objectives. For instance the thermocline layer is a barrier between the high SVP gradient surface waters and the cold, steady gradient deep waters. The thermocline actually bounces sound, so if a surface ship is using active SONAR the thermocline can provide protection from pinging. There are other features like the SOFAR channel which is created by specific SVP features which sound waves oscillate between the upper and lower layers creating extremely long sound propagation zones (and I mean extremely long). Bathymetry and sound propagation is a complicated subject, but needless to say it is significantly more than generating sound waves and listening for a return, or passively listening. Accurate SVP data is crucial for generating target tracks and interpreting broadband and narrowband inputs.

    • @minshouyukida1112
      @minshouyukida1112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@theotherside931 the usually speed of sound we are talking about, is vibration through the medium of air.
      If we change that medium to ice, or water. Of course the speed would be different.
      Since the molecules in solid is more closely packed, the speed of sound is actually the fastest in solid, followed by liquid, follow by gases.

    • @minshouyukida1112
      @minshouyukida1112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@theotherside931 knowing all this you can see why people can't hear in space, because the medium in nonexistent. Or you can say, because the few molecules in space is so so far apart from each other, they cannot deliver vibrations. So the speed of sound in space is close to zero.

    • @MrSteveArr
      @MrSteveArr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Mora as Lachy T says - subs will have an onboard CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) probe that is constantly measuring the salinity, temperature and depth (pressure), which as you know can be used to calculate sound velocity. They might also have a sound velocimeter which directly measures it by sending pulses a very short distance through the water and measuring the delay. Water density is really important because it affects the submarine's trim ie how it sits in the water. To maintain a specific depth they might need to adjust the ballast as the density changes. Lachy T also mentioned XBT (eXpendable Bathy Thermographs) which they release through a special hole in the sub, and it sends the sound velocity data back to the submarine as it falls via a wire - never to return.
      The sound velocity profile is critically important to the sonar operators, so they can work out where to hide (under a layer), how well their passive sonar will work, and the reverse - how far away might they be detected by other vessels. As well as the SOFAR channel, you also get funky things like convergence zones where sounds at a certain depth will be focussed and re-appear a certain distance away from the sub - like a circle, so many miles away from the submarine. ASW (Anti-submarine warfare) operators get really excited about them ;)
      Unlike what you see in the movies, subs hardly ever use active sonar (pings), they do it all with passive sonar, just listening very carefully, with lots of hydrophones and computer processing. Although for an under-ice exercise, they might use it a bit more to avoid bumping into things.
