"Spencer loves esports but cut Blizzard's esports" You're assuming there isn't incompetence. Which there obviously is, especially in the recent acquisitions. Activision Blizzard and Bethesda have taken a nose dive in quality. That's why they were even on the market to be bought. Some acquisitions are made as IP grabs, mainly for game pass. These past 2 big ones weren't just that though. They want more skyrims. They want more call of dutys. To get these they need sweeping changes and honestly these modern developers are so bogged down in taint that the only hope would likely be a much more extensive purge followed by a much different approach to hiring. Not that I think any of these layoffs will make enough of a difference. They need to get rid of the people on top the most. But they wont. This isn't even a half measure. They can either do a real, hard restructure and admit failures and get more backlash then it's worth or they can cut fat where they can and milk game pass. The later is the path of least resistance, and given that Microsoft could survive without xbox they will apsolutely take it.
Good point! Incompetence is definitely a point I did not consider as much. I agree that all these top executives are making bad decisions repeatedly. And now we see the new Blizzard president is literally an executive who was at Activision, so they'll never learn.
I have never seen someone argue for more layoffs but you aren't wrong. They did do some with tango and arkane austin, cosidering they did make a lot of expensive flops before Hi fi rush. But they could have cut a lot more dead weight. I honestly don't know why microsoft bought ninja theory and allowed them to make such an expensive game. Imo they need to cut down and remove a lot of the people from their studios, you do not need that many people making games.
Microsoft have been using contract workers because they don’t have to spend as much for benefits. That’s why Halo Infinite has been such a mess for a while, and why they’re ditching the engine for Unreal 5. Wouldn’t be surprised if they were getting ready to do the same for all those studios. Thankfully Toys for Bob have been granted their freedom. Let’s hope that more studios are able to escape. Someone else in the comments speculated that gross incompetence and being out of touch could be to blame for this. As someone who’s a fan of Gears of War and Halo I can say that description is 100% accurate. They ran both franchises into the ground. They also killed Rare, and all the original devs are long gone.
What a nice video.. and it looks like the cost that they are talking about is more serious, since now they are probably going 3rd party. Maybe maintaining all those developers as well as basing your revenue in a subscription service was too much for them. This coming months will be very interesting in terms of gaming ecosystem, it might change.
Employees Cost so much in the western society.
