I've been using Console 1 since 2015. MK3 is a big upgrade, especially when it comes to knob resolution and knob feel. I no longer think about which EQs or whatever to use, unless I want some specific. You dont need to scroll through the menus btw to load a different section, you hold LOAD and press the button where you want it to load, e.g LOAD+EQ1, much quicker. About the angle, get a laptop stand! they're like 30-50bucks and you have any angle and height available to you. Fader mkiii will be a great addition.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy plus 2 on that vote. Exactly for the cost of console, which is not cheap, the consumer should not have to spend more in assessories to fix engineering design flaws. That is like buying a car for 60k with no steering wheel, yet claim it is an awesome product with the mindset of just deal with it 😅
SSL’s Uc1 will be getting a software update in March, which will allow most 3rd party plugins to be controlled by it. That is a long awaited feature. I’ve got the Console mkii, and haven’t really used it since I switched to the SSL’s. I was thinking of upgrading to the mkiii for controlling my non-SSL software, but not sure of that now. Another great video Dave!
Really enjoyed this series, and appreciated your balanced review. I'm currently rebuilding my old system and have been considering Softube vs SSL. In the end, I still went for Softube - partly because SSL put me off with their 'Abandonware' Nucleus, and they take ages between updates for UC1. Personally, I don't care about mapping other maker's plugins to this - I just want a really good channel strip controller where the knobs match the plugins, and I suspect the next Softube Fader will suit me much more than SSL's UF8. It arrived yesterday and I'm loving it so far! Thanks again.
Ordered one up in Canada back at the end of December when they said it was going to arrive in stores here… was then told it would be Feb 6… now i’m being told mid April… which is a bummer because I have a record ready to mix that I guess i’m going to be mixing without it. Hopefully it comes sooner than later, looks awesome.
Good review. I agree with your need for improvements comments. The GUI is terribly dated and even makes Pro Tools look cutting edge. The interface of Softube reminds of the statement of minimal effort. SSLs interface is on point and is well thought out. I like softubes plugins but they have to get those features added especially for their price point.
thanks, great review and I am 99% agree with your thoughts ;) but isn't SSL upgrading its software to let their controllers use any VST plugin? so not only SSL, but also Softube, UAD and even all others ;)
I use the Console 1 MK3 along-side my Presonus Faderport 16 in Logic Pro X... I don't even look at my computer screen at all anymore. Not even when I'm tracking, in many cases.
It will be very interesting to see their fader-control unit mk2 when it comes out, and how it integrate with the console 1. Wonder if Softube will follow in SSL´s footsteps and also release adedicated transport section. If you needed to choose: Console 1 mk3 + the fader mk2 (which we actually don't know much about yet) or would you buy the UF8+UF1+UC1 combo ?? Pricewise I think these two combos will be very similar...
i dont know untill i try it but that lights not need to be stickin your eyes all the time .....i hate bright LEDs ....they should put aditional setting to change colours if want to and adjust brightens to users prefrences and can memoryze it ....screens should be twice size at least and EQ live mode on it but we is looking at the screen anyway ...when is next one improved comig out 😅in half the price?
The LED and display brightness can be adjusted, thankfully, but I agree all of those LED should be able to change colour. I don't like bright white light, especially in the evening... I like the led colour od the MKII more... I hope they will add something like dark mode and change them to orange (like the dunkel mode in some of their plugin GUIs) Other than that, the controller itself is easy 9/10 for me...
Softube has the Fader1 that has faders and be linked with Console 1. The current Fader1 matches Console 1 mkii style-wise, so they might be updating that soon as well. And you can use Console 1 with the SSL UF8 as well.
The only thing that bothered me yet was the selection menu, not the screen size, i have good eyes, but having to click the button on the top left, then having to reach to the bottom right to turn the gain knob to wheel the selection. U always need two hands for it
really a bad experience! I bought one and it had a faulty key, I received another which had some hard keys that were uncomfortable and defective... I received a third with keys similar to the second but even harder and more uncomfortable! I contacted support and they replied that hard keys are normal and thanked me for the feedback I feel cheated
Have you heard any kind of update as to if Softube will add the GUI at a later date? I also feel like this is a really lame feature and like you said, even though you should be using your ears, id like to see how id be manipulating a hardware device. Especially since the unit costs almost $1k and the plugins arent cheap...
I understand but maybe you mention for Logic users. Also Nektar is working on bringing support to other DAWs. This controller you can control any plugging you want with super easy mapping and you decide the colors you want. It actually addresses all the issues you have with console 1
I actually dislike the screens...i prefer the "no screen approach...i feel like having a screen takes me out of the whole "no screen looking" approach that you get from mixing on a console and or using outboard gear
Ya text label too small! For $900 why can’t all the labeling be BACKLIT?! OLED screens too small! My God? these are ScribbleStrips! My SL24series3 same problem. Recently i went back to using my Yamaha 01X > wow!! REAL readable scribbles! I have Console1.Mk2 think i will skip update. Thank You for good review. #HHNET #NASAV_studios

Or, they can add a way to adjust the angle to the product, that's my vote :)

Just want to point out, SSL announced, 360 software with their controllers , now allow mapping to ANY 3rd party plugins recently at NAMM.
Yes, this video was recorded the week before SSL announced that new feature
I love your reviews man, and I have watched them all forever. Keep up the good work
I appreciate that!

NICE! have fun with it
this was great. i was having some FOMO but this made me really happy with my decision to go with the SSL ecosystem.
Thanks for watching!

That's a bummer. I hope you get your Console 1 soon!
Excellent review as always brother! 🎹
Thank you kindly!

Totally agree

Yes they are in March.
Yep, we know
I’m between this and the icon P1-M setup with a Nektar CS12
Have you used any of the icon p1 or v1 series?
I have not, sorry
I use the Console 1 MK3 along-side my Presonus Faderport 16 in Logic Pro X... I don't even look at my computer screen at all anymore. Not even when I'm tracking, in many cases.
Great! Thanks for sharing
The SSL UC1 is now able to control 3rd party plugins
This video was recorded before the SSL update, thanks for the info
Yes displays are too small. With this size they should at least be angled towards the user.
I agree

The SSL stuff every-time.

Will there be a motorised fader and will it be daisychainable?
Coming soon, i am told.
Does soft tube have anything like ssl uf8 or can you use it with uf8 for the physical channel slides?
I don't understand that question, sorry
Softube has the Fader1 that has faders and be linked with Console 1. The current Fader1 matches Console 1 mkii style-wise, so they might be updating that soon as well. And you can use Console 1 with the SSL UF8 as well.

UC-1 will control any plugin with next update to 360 software which should be released in March according to SSL.
This video was recorded before the SSL update, thanks for the info

Sorry to hear about that experience.
Wow that’s unfortunate

No update as far as I know. You may want to ask Softube to see what they say
Nektar has the best controller for Logic. Blows the console 1 and ssl out of the water.
That's great but I am not a Logic user
I understand but maybe you mention for Logic users. Also Nektar is working on bringing support to other DAWs. This controller you can control any plugging you want with super easy mapping and you decide the colors you want. It actually addresses all the issues you have with console 1
See, I would consider the softube equally as proprietary as the SSL

Thanks for watching!
I can control mostly everything with my Avid S3
Great, then you certainly dont need this.
