My Tav was a Dark Urge (Resisting it), so he was like "Wait... You want... ME to be the leader of the group. Have you all lost your minds?!" ... At which point he looked at the party and realized he was actually probably the most competent/stable of the gang and went "oooookay nevermind then, leader it is". XD

Astarion has his moments of being very self-aware of the tropes during the story, funnily enough. He calls everyone in the group a bunch of weirdos, including himself, calls his romance with a Durge a romantic tragedy that can profit many-a-smut-peddler from all the angst, among other moments like these.

Given you can play as any origin, it seems like the sole reason Tav is the leader is based on the scenario where you save Shadowheart/meet her and Lae’zel. Shadowheart assumes you are as you went above he head to save her. Tav has to make decisions after this bc Lae’zel and Shadowheart are bickering. Everyone who meets them now assumes Tav is in charge.

Nowadays, I've learned to have a loose outline of events I can pull from and I am more comfortable letting the players drive the narrative with their actions and I adapt my plans as needed.

WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE

  • @silentwalker434
    @silentwalker434 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +102

I think there are some good reasons for why Tav is the leader of the group.
Shadowheart might be pragmatic and practically enough to lead the group, but her whole Sharran quest and amnesia proves a hindrance to her ability to lead since like Wyll, she's got her own boss up top to deal with.
Lae'zel might embody the qualities of a firm leader, but if she were in charge she would likely be too strict and nobody would want to follow her.
Astarion is....Astarion. Need I say more?
Gale could function as a good second in command, but not as leader because of his obvious condition of needing magic items and that could skew his judgement as a leader along his all baggage with Mystra.
Wyll might radiate main character energy, he is unfortunately bound by his contract and can't be considered a reliable leader with him still being leashed by it.
So Tav is somehow the most sane and grounded person out of all of them.

Now that I think about it Wyll seems to be less bound by his dommy-mommy than Shadowheart and Laezel by theirs, because of their blind faith.
All it took for Wyll to defy Mizora was having to kill a non-devil for her. He didn't even know whether Karlach was innocent, only that she isn't a devil, and he suspected he'd be punished for sparing her.
Laezel killed her family members as a school project, while Shadowheart would've had no problem killing anyone to gain a higher rank.

I think the simple answer as to why Tav is the leader is the same as to why any given Origin character is the leader should you choose them as an avatar; They have the unique distinction of being controlled by the player, and the player has this uncanny knack for getting results.
The way Tav has a good pair of magical shoes ready for Gale kind of says it all, really XD

Wyll, Gale, and Jaheira all make a lot of sense to me as leaders of the group
Wyll has the most immediate connection to Baldur's Gate, he's already a folk hero and is defined by his unbreachable moral fiber that causes him to stumble into bad situations
Gale is situated as a kind of magical focal point, he has to be involved or he'll accidentally destroy the world, hes the former chosen of the god of magic, and he seeks the crown that heels the Absolute
And Jaheira is the matron of the Harpers, a former companion form previous games, and a consummate flawed hero whos accustomed to reigning in extreme personalities, especially Minsc

I think if this game was made into a show without the concept of the player being the leader, Gale would definitely take the role- external problems like his bugged approval system have mischaracterized him to be more desperate than he actually is, but he's very pragmatic and rational with everything and he's neutrally aligned, so he can kinda bend either way as long as it gets the job done (although he doesn't like unnecessary bloodshed). It seems canon too, looking at all the animated shorts they've made with Gale being the one to lead the way and narrate their journeys. However, he'd still have to go through his arc of overcoming his power-imbalanced exploitation from Mystra, just like all the other companions' traumas.

My paladin and him do not get along *AT ALL.* Astarion killed him when he first drank from him and tried to play it off, earning him a punch in the face. That kinda set the tempo.

@@spiraljumper74 You can be a heroic goody two shoes and still get to be best pals, or even lovers with Astarion. I managed to do it my first playthrough once I figured out it's not being "good" he's against, but rather being a stickler about it. If you pick humourous options, or indulge his mischievous nature to a reasonable degree, he'll grow to like you quite a bit. Defending him in conversation and protecting him from those who want to harm him will also earn you huge points with him
      SPOILERS:
Some examples of these harmless but mischievous options are
-- Telling auntie Ethel about the mind flayer parasite
-- Baaing at the Red Cap in the swamp
-- Telling Lae'zel to say "please" before you let her down
-- Telling Astarion during the mirror scene that Shadowheart or Gale is more pretty than him

I think its because Tav is the first one who wanted to team up, making that offer to them all puts a label on Tav. They're the one who convinces them to join up so they look to Tav first.
Gale is too inexperienced with the physical space and is violently short lived. Wyl is one of the few non-scoundrels but also a major altruistic hero (which most of them will find tiresome as in liezels words he is a and contracted to a demon who wants him to hunt karlach, which puts off the others. Karlach's is loved by everyone but is also short lived and doesnt seek leadership. No one will trust Astorian even if he wasnt a vampire. Laezel alienates people with her attitute and is a Gith, plus has a conflict with Shadowheart. Shadowheart hardly remembers herself, is mysterious ontop of that and has a conflit with Laezel.
Tav is the only one they are willing to trust as all the others have an agenda except to keep their eye on the ball of curing their affliction and mediating their internal issues. As a result Tav is the one who acts as an emotional anchor for them all. They THINK the Durge contains the same qualities initially but by the time they realize what the durge actually is, they're already invested in the dynamic and Durge's actual leadership qualities stand out, to their benefit and their bane.
    (Act 3 spoilers)
In a situation where both arent present (in a durge run its hinted they killed tav for investigating a string of serial killings they commited and in a Tav run, Durge leaves for baldurs gate by themselves weakened and alone, falling pray to Orin. You can find their body in one of Orin's chambers. In an Origin scenario where you lay as the companion, both situations occur and your chosen companion is thrust into the position and has to make due, but your agenda clashes with the others and complicates things. rather different scenarios can occur.

Where does it say that Durge goes to Baldur's Gate? Playing as Tav, you simply find his corpse with Orin, and that’s it. I understand why the developers didn’t include him as a companion, but to make such a small reference to him... I don’t even know...
