I just Google Translated my way through the game, the plot is very simplistic, as are the side quests. It's a pretty friendly game to go through. I only understand the damage calculations when I got near the end of the game. The damage numbers seen in the menu when buying moves is a multiplier rather than the damage amount. If the move says 110, it's your attack x 1.1 - enemy defense. I hear the max level is 127 but I stopped at 45. You gain a level every 9 floors in the waterfall dungeon, all the way to max.
A note for Crisis City: It's possible to play as the bosses! With the Extra mode unlocked (by code or legitimately), on character select, go to random sleect and hold L1 and press circle for R-Nimbus, or R1 and circle for Ashlay.
Legit I played The Grandmaster Saga and loved it a ton growing up, but always going "I kinda wish there was a better take/stab at this", and learning about Brightis feels like child me got his wish so long ago, but never knew it was a thing till just now.
Honestly this was probably my favourite video in this series. Pop'n Tanks looks crazy fun - Crisis City was hilarious and OH BOY how have I never heard of Brightis before? It's another one to go into my "please Hilltop" pile! Well done man - super good work yet again
It's wild that it's as unknown as it is considering the quality of the package and people behind it. Makes me wonder why Brightis never made the leap. Its developers already had a lot of success overseas with other games, is easy to get into, the ambientation looks pretty european too... Thanks for showing us Sean

No joke this video dropped just as i was taking a break from updating my PS1 library, so now I've got some new titles to add. Couldn't have been better timing lol.
As a huge fan of Quintet's Heaven and Earth trilogy, I really need to play Brightis, but I think I'll wait for a translation. I knew the game _existed,_ but I didn't know it was that good!
Popn Tanks has eerily similar vibe to Advance Wars. Which is very interesting when you consider that earlier Nintendo Wars game didn't have this tone (they were comical but they didn't really rely on cute and appealing characters like Advance does).

another great video Sean. never heard of Brightis before now but now I'm real excited to try it one day, real shame it never got a localization. but also can't wait for your next video, i know it will be a banger.
SO happy to see you cover Crisis City, played thru it on a complete whim a couple years ago and it's peak "funny budget/amateur game project with huge ambition." Occasionally frustrating bits aside I had a genuinely fun time with it, the highway battle had me completely floored the first time I saw it
Pop'n Tanks gave me PowerStone vibes, needless to say I got it immediately. I have a soft spot for the SFX. The pitch shifted, swishy synthesized sounds capture that 90s aesthetic so well.
Whenever I watch one of your videos, I quickly spiral down a rabbithole researching something from it; this time it was The artist for Pop'n Tanks. So thanks for these hour long videos that take me 3 hours or more to get through! lol
You highlight something I really like about games from this era: the length of play segments. A lot of modern AAA games will demand you play for multiple hours in one sitting before you've felt like you've made enough progress to be satisfied. Now, these games are loaded with detailed graphics, fully voiced dialogue, elaborate cutscenes, and endless open worlds to explore -- they're technological marvels, without a doubt. But I can't tell you how many times I've gone back to an old PS1 or N64 game, played for a bit, put it down at a reasonable stopping point, and then been surprised to find that only about 40 minutes to an hour had passed. It's like the perfect amount of time. A game with a well-paced story or tight level progression can make it feel like quite a lot has happened in a short span of time, and that sort of trickery will always be more impressive to me than any advances in graphics hardware. In case it's not obvious, I played FF7 Rebirth recently. Boy did that game make me contemplate the importance of brevity.
Does anyone else think there’s gonna be a Sean Seanson effect to fan translations where translators will find a new project to work on from these videos?
Sean this is another banger as always but oh my god I don't have the first idea why, but that skeleton's face when you zoom in with the scream has me absolutely creased tf over, in tears over here
I just played the weirdest Japanese PS1 game called Germs where you walk around a black and white new york with big red arrows in the sky pointing to doors you can enter, but I couldn't find the story lol it seems like there's a huge world to explore but it feels so lifeless and you use the left stick to look around and Cross, Triangle, and the bumper buttons to walk. I think it's an apocalypse game or an alien game maybe, but I really couldn't find story anywhere
Couldn’t find the story like no one has documented it? Had the same issue with this Saturn game I featured on my own channel called The Mansion of Hidden Souls. Part of the problem is there is a Sega CD game of the same name that’s the prequel. I don’t recall it being egregiously expensive so please explain the game to me if you get it
@@wieldylattice3015 I think there are people who have played it on TH-cam but it's a big open world that i couldn't find anything in. I come from Gunt-a-mania, but I stay for Mr. Seanson's excellent work 😀 Seriously, the videos are always entertaining, but the amount of legwork and research done here is always top-notch. Like top 1% of TH-camrs care to look into actual information when talking about games, it must be. I mean, _it makes me sad_ to now know that the remnants of Quintet are now working on terrible budget anime schoolgirl action games with costume break features instead of cool RPGs, but *knowing* that now is cool! Love this series. Congrats to all the winners who got their games covered this ep!
Excellent video as always. This is the only channel that can consistently give me new games to try out. Even after downloading a full English romset for the PS1, you manage to find obscure stuff that still looks to be a blast to play. Looking forward to playing Pop N' Tanks and Crisis City. And if Brightis ever gets a translation, I'm most definitely dedicating a week to beating it.
Thanks for mentioning Brightis. Recently finished it, a very good game indeed. Not much dialogue either so it's quite easy to Google Translate through the game. Everyone should give it a playthrough! If you beat the game at Lvl 20 or under, you get a sword with 100 attack. If anyone has any questions about the game, feel free to ask. There's apparently a third book in the game which may indicate Magic LVL 4, but I haven't seen it, I only got up to 3 which you find on Floor 20 of the Clan's Tomb after dungeon 6 or 7, and Ice 3 is an instant win spell, it also generates half a bar of light. The light meter is a non-issue, cast fire spells at a wall and it'll boost your meter a large amount. If you use the Pocketstation with this game you can make elemental swords better than the ones the shopkeeper makes you but the minigame is so hard it's not worth it. You can play cards against the citizens in town too. More will offer to play cards with you as you beat them on the pocketstation.
Ah, so happy to see another Japan Only PS1 Games! Game #1: For some reason this was my favourite one, probably because of how fun it looks (even if the AI is simply stupid/stupidly simple). Colorful, quirky, fun. Game #2: Speaking of quirky fun, this one would also be some nice, rather arcade-like, frantic action. Gives me Cannon Spike vibes and that is a good thing. Game #3: As someone who loves fighting games, I probably could find some enjoyment out of it. Can't be worse than the DOS fighting game "Battling Butlers" anyways. Since it is set in a highschool and they are teenagers and thus underage, I'm not a fan of the boob jiggling though. (Just writing this makes me worried to be on some list) Game #4: Yeah, I had a feeling you would say a lot about this game, considering how many screenshots you posted on Twitter. 😅 But the game looks really fun and I love the enemies, especially the fat fishmen. Okay, since it is me who is commenting, you know what time it is, right? That's right! It is kitty spotting time! 0:18 Okay, not sure if that counts but I'll add it in anyways. 3:56 Luna and Honey (Honey kinda hiding) 53:54 Honey 1:33:10 Luna Hope I got them all! Anyways, thank you so much for yet another fantastic and funny video! Can't wait for your next one!
I also love the fat fishmen! such a fun little design, and they're incredibly tough to fight too haha great cat spotting as always, you're a pro! Appreciate you watching pal, glad you enjoyed :)
Glad to see you back and I enjoyed this upload. Feels like this is the niche you thoroughly own, now. I discovered your channel from the PAL games, but these Japan-only PS1 games are definitely where it's at IMHO. Lovely work man.
Actually, I thought about it for a while. Chances are we would have been skipping badminton practice much to the chagrin of the chemistry teacher coach, Mr. Gasper, in order to do tournaments of Tobal #1
Talking about fighting games - an interesting one that I played a demo of and played with my friends was Versus (or Vs.). Killer licensed soundtrack and characters. The loading screen provides you slider puzzles while you wait. The single player is BRUTAL.
Hell yeah. I can't believe Brightis isn't the top priority for every translator, it's such a cool game.

Love these, keep em coming
Yesssss cheered me right up thank you MAN for TH-cam VIDEO featuring WHEEL
All of these games look like so much fun to play! I'm definitely going to check out Brightis sometime soon. Thank you for showing us these games! =)
(Just writing this makes me worried to be on some list)
Game #4: Yeah, I had a feeling you would say a lot about this game, considering how many screenshots you posted on Twitter. 😅 But the game looks really fun and I love the enemies, especially the fat fishmen.
Okay, since it is me who is commenting, you know what time it is, right?
That's right! It is kitty spotting time!
0:18 Okay, not sure if that counts but I'll add it in anyways.
3:56 Luna and Honey (Honey kinda hiding)
53:54 Honey
1:33:10 Luna
Hope I got them all!
Anyways, thank you so much for yet another fantastic and funny video! Can't wait for your next one!
I also love the fat fishmen! such a fun little design, and they're incredibly tough to fight too haha
great cat spotting as always, you're a pro!
Appreciate you watching pal, glad you enjoyed :)
one of the best to do it, thanks for providin'.
