Roofnest Falcon In-Depth Walk Around - Roof Top Tent

  • Here's a complete Roofnest Falcon Roof Top Tent walkaround before we get it installed on the land cruiser. Clam shell RTT
    Keep an eye out for our upcomming install video and all of our adventures this coming summer.
    We also have a unique idea for getting the tent on and off the roof so keep an eye out for that too.
    So here are the big reasons we chose this particular tent.
    Profile - This tents profile is extremely low which means it will effect gas mpg less and well let's be honest it is going to look very cool.
    Weight - The falcon is 135lbs. Tents get up to or even over 200lbs and that is more than I want on my roof. I have traveled with weight on the roof and less is better. Not only is it safer but the vehicle handles better.
    Load Rails - The available load rails are going to allow me to get a few things that were on the rack to the top of the tent.
    Accessory Channels - The roofnest's accessory channels take a standard M8 bolt just like the frontrunner and the possibilities are endless.
    Fit - the dimensions of this tent fit my frontrunner perfectly. If my rack was a 1/2" longer the tent would fit down into the rack but due to the Alu-Cab Shadow Awn's mounting brackets I am going to have to mount with the Frontrunner brackets that elevate it 1.2"
    Price - while this is no inexpensive item when comparing to similar tents like the Alu-Cab's Gen 3 Expedition, Go Fast Camper GFC, Eezi-Awn Stealth, and Camp King after you include the shipping costs (roofnest includes shipping in price) most of the direct competition cost $1000 or more over the roofnest.
    Here are a few similar tents to compare:
    Alu-Cab's Gen 3 Expedition
    Go Fast Camper GFC
    Eezi-Awn Stealth
    Camp King

    You are sure to see some major work on the hundy as we continue to get it expedition ready. Now we have a second major project, a first gen Tacoma 4x4 TRD off-road. You will see everything from ARB, slee, national luna, blue ridge overland gear, alu-cab, odyssey batteries, old man emu, warn, safari, and many more overland outfitters. We will also do some DIY projects along the way as we always like to save a few bucks. It should be an impressive year with a very busy schedule. We hope you join us.
    Thanks again for stopping by Brady Adventures. We are here to help and inspire your adventure travel, overland rig / truck / UTE 4x4 build, with diy how-to videos, inspirational travel stories, camping expeditions, and equipment reviews on overland products from companies like ARB, alu-cab, old man emu, and slee. If you check out our blog at bradyadventures.com you will find amazon links to the products we use. We love going off road in our four-wheel drive V8 land cruiser 100 and frequently can be found in the middle of the forest or mountains. We share what we know about survival and living off the land. Thanks again for checking out our videos.
    For the next few months we will be posting regularly with the goal of doing one major modification per month including one major video each week. For each mod we will start with a intro of the modification, possible options, hard choices and tradeoffs, and sketch out the plan. After the plan is finalized we will do an unboxing and overview video of the materials for the project. For some items we will also post detailed separate reviews of the individual products. The next major video will document the installation and the final video will be a Walkaround and summary. You will be able to find a playlist for each modification or can watch the overall build from start to finish in the “Preparing for Adventure the Story of Brady Adventures First Overland Build” Thanks for stopping by and checking us out and please subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss the exciting evolution of Bernard the Land Cruiser and our overland adventures.

    Out of all of the RTTs I am the most interested in this one because of the channel. That is an amazing feature. The price point scares me a bit, but your review is the best one I have found yet. Thanks for showing the bottom of the tent. Nobody that I have seen yet has done that. The reason why that is important for me is that it will be mounted on a trailer not a car, so I needed to know how it attaches. Thanks for the great review. Extra star for the jammies.

      @@BradyAdventures Thanks. After I posted the comment, I did search online and found the Motop RTT. It looks very similar but not identical. But I won't be surprised if they were made from the same factory. I like it because of its slimline profile (16cm) when closed and lighter weight (69kg) compared to Australian & South African made alternatives (average 27cm & 90-99kg respectively). The price point is not to be sneezed at as well. This looks like the one for me. Thanks for the review.

    Over here in Ausie, i have the Kings grand tourer roof top tent, mark 2
    Simply put it is awsome,
    As with anything, the 2nd version is the best,
    They found at the hinged end a double rubber seal, to stop water entering the tent whilst driving in rain works best, face your tent hinge first into the rain whilst at camp,
    Bottom rail for attaching to car roof racks, it has 3, it has all the othe features and more, with your dollar being what it is, you guys should look at it as an option, it is an awesome set up, ive been on a road trip for 6 months, and it has not let me down,

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man, I just took a look. I have had some minor issues with water getting in the front seal when it is raining and I am driving pretty fast. That double seal is a nice upgrade. I am currently working on a mod to fix the problem on mine. Your market is definitely more mature and has a lot more to choose from. I frequently drool over Ausie stuff and have almost ordered some things but the shipping is crazy. Thanks for checking us out!

    Thinking of getting one. But I want to cut off the bottom and make a plywood / fiberglass little frame around the roof of my old landcruiser 60 that makes a perfectly horizontal mount to then put the tent on. Then cut a 2' x 3' hole in the rear section of the vehicle roof so I can get in from inside the car. This will also allow for more space in the tent when folded down so I could keep more bedding up there.

    3000 mm means you can have a column of water 3000mm high on there and it doesnt leak

    Just curious if you’ve measured it and compared it to the specs on their website. It seems shorter than the advertised 90” outside length and 88” inside length. Great video btw, also, thank you for showing the bottom of the roofnest, very helpful.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I bought mine the tent was 85" on the site and it was spot on when I got it. I think they lengthened it at some point to 90". I wouldn't mind having that extra 5"s When I was watching roofnest a little more closely like 6mos prior to purchasing and out a year after it seemed that they were regularly making slight adjustments to all kinds of things. I have seen some people getting tents with new features or changes that they didn't expect. All that to say I know there are 85" and 90" versions but I expect if you confirm with them it should be pretty accurate but this is speculation and the world manufacturing and supply change stuff has changed a lot.

    Nice review.. I am wanting to try the Falcon on top of my sienna minivan directly on the roof well actually with the roof of the sienna cut out and cut some of the bottom of the falcon out so access to get in the tent is from inside the vehicle . I would be making a 3/16" metal frame around the cut out of the sienna roof. In your opinion does seem like it would be feasible to do with this product?

    Your exterior dimensions differ from that on the roofnest site, I see the tent is 90" long. Please clarify, I would love it to be 85"

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine is 85" confirmed. I think they may have lengthened it, probably to accommodate taller individuals. I have noticed roofnest seems to evolve the tent fairly rapidly. The rain awning has also changed slightly and I have seen falcons only slightly older than mine with different features.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roofnest is based in the U.S. The tents are designed in the U.S. and manufactured in China. At this point this specific design has been copied by several other companies in the U.S. and Australia.

    How much time and effort does it take to install and remove one of these from a roof rack?

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without an electric ratchet it takes for ever. With an electric ratchet it only takes me about 15 minutes to remove the nuts on four mounts and then it's ready to lift off. It takes a little longer to get them on since it can be a little tedious to reach them and get them started. The biggest inconvenience is having a couple other guys to help you get it on or off.

    • @Tyler-rv2su

      @@BradyAdventures , Nice tent. And excellent review. But my vehicle also won't fit in the garage with a tent mounted. Even one as low profile as this. That's the main reason I don't buy a roof top tent. In my condo complex you MUST park your vehicle in the garage. I can't put the tent on and off by myself and I have no place to store it once it's off. I'll just have to keep using my ground tent.

    How to install solar panels on RoofNest Falcon tent ?

    • @BradyAdventures
