  • Installed our roof nest falcon on our 100 series land cruiser's frontrunner slimline 2 roof rack. There were a few challenges but it went very smoothly. I can't recommend using an electric ratchet enough. It made the job so easy. The one we used was about $100 from harbor freight. Everything went together easily and the end product was incredible. Hope you enjoy the video and please let us know if you have any questions.
    I think this is the socket but I am not sure it's the exact same length since it is part of a set I have had forever but I bet it's close enough.

    Those Roofnests look so awesom! Let us know long term how you like it. I remember Ezi-Awn having a square tube bracket about 6-8" long where you could install on the underside of the slats and pull it tight using a long bolt/washers and nyloc nut. I used them a couple years back to mount a Tepui to my Rhino Rack Pioneer platform. they worked great with no movement. But hey, theres 20 different ways to get the same job done and ya'll got it done!!

    FYI, if you have the Falcon XL, the tent's C Channels match perfectly with the rack's slots for where you insert the bolts for the mount so I had to offset the whole tent to one side.

    Thanks for the video - very thoughtful and helpful. One question is that I also have a 100 cruiser with a slimline II rack. The rack is only 77 inches long and the Faclon is 90 inches. Yet, yours didn't look like it was extending beyond the rack. What am I missing?

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      My rack is a little longer than standard, one slat. Off the top of my head I can't remember exactly how many inches that adds but it is just enough for the falcon to sit perfectly in the footprint. The custom length is something that ok4wd informed me of when I ordered it. If you talk to frontrunner directly you have to find the right person to ship you what you need but it's just a couple slightly longer side rails and an extra slat.

    I've been looking at this RTT (Called the Motop in Australia) for my Defender on the same rack!
    Can you tell me how wide your Front Runner rack is edge to edge?
    I'm deciding on whether to go the small or bigger one as I dont want it hanging over the edge of the rack either.
    The smaller size looks great on your rack.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My rack is 53" across. I really wanted the XL for room but it was just too wide. It would have probably looked ok if my awning wasn't in the way but it would have been way off center with my setup. Good luck!

    Definitely awesome video. Gave me the confidence to buy a roofnest tent for my frontrunner slimline ii rack. I have one question: Did you ever try to mount the tent directly onto the frontrunner rack? I believe there is a comment below by Bryant Snow that indicated that might work. Thanks!

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never did try it. I am not sure but it would look cool if it fit, super low profile. Although I think the falcon's are longer now so it would probably have to sit on the side rail. Good luck and enjoy your roofnest!

    Any good advise setting up falcon on slimeline rack on a fj cruise what mounts did you use, would you use the ones that came with rooftop tent

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would definitely recommend the frontrunner standard profile mounts vs the roof nest mounts. The tent sits on the rack just right. If you can use 2 sets (aka 8 total mounts) or even 6 mounts it will make it super strong. The biggest issue for me was the ability to reach all the bolts to get the nuts started on all 8 mounts. Best to be sure you can reach all your possible mounting bolt locations from the front, rear, and/or sunroof. There was no way I could reach in from the side. I guess this makes it secure from theft :-) As for the FJ in particular I can't really comment on any specific mounting suggestion or issues with that vehicle but I would certainly like to add one to my fleet 😂 Good luck!

    I’m installing a clamshell tent on my prinsu rack and was wondering do you have the links for the tools you used? Especially the 13mm long socket? It’s a pain using a ratchet wrench and I need to add an additional bracket and rubber stripping for stability and reduce metal to metal vibrations

    I had a Smittybilt RTT before and I was able to mount it directly on Slimline 2 (Toyota 4runner) with provided mounting hardware (Yes, I admit that I had to curse a few times to get the nuts tightened up). I'm considering Roofnest falcon. Could you have mounted Roofnest falcon directly sitting on the Slimline 2 crossbars? Why wouldn't that work? Thanks.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never tried but it would have been very close. the tent is longer and woder then my rack by anout and inch in each direction. It might drop in due to the angle of the bottom of the tent but it would be very very close. I should probably try it since it would look even cooler if it were another inch or two lower.

  • @gevorgnazaryan8720
    @gevorgnazaryan8720 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think I will be in the predicament with my prinsu rack. So I decided (when I get the tent) I will rest the tent on the entire rack (without using any front runner mounts) and allow every one of the 8 crossbars to share the vertical load and just tighten the brackets at the very front and the very back crossbars where I will have easier access to them. Because if you think about it, the brackets are there only to keep the tent from sliding around but the vertical load will be spread out between all the cross bars. I am wondering if you could have done that.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is a great idea. For my rack it would have been very close, it certainly would have looked great, but I didn't attempt. The tent is slightly larger than my racks footprint but it may have worked due to the angle of the edges on the falcon. I was also concerned it wpuld have interfered a bit with my awning mounts.

    • @gevorgnazaryan8720
      @gevorgnazaryan8720 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BradyAdventures I see your point. With the FJ cruiser may be easier because the roof line of the FJ curves downward at the front and at the end giving you more room to work with.

    I wonder how well this would bolt up to the dissent rack

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm speaking from memory about the dissent rack but if i remember the dissent doesn't have a lip like the frontrunner and it has similar t-slots if not the same. you may be able to use frontrunner mounts or might be even better to mount straight to the rack. You may have to fab a piece of steal to span the slat since the roofnest provided mounting brackets are pretty short and designed for load bars. Hope that makes sense.

  • @joshuamoore6200
    @joshuamoore6200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How did you mount your awning to your falcon? Just received my nomadic 270 and the falcon brackets only allow to use two bolts on each side. I feel that the awning is to heavy for that.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My awning is monted to my rack and not the falcon. I had the awning before the falcon. I agree, I wouldn't mount my shadowawn to the roofnest. The 270 awnings are so heavy and put so much torque on the pivot point of the awning I'd be worried it would damage the channel or general integrity of the tent.

    Would you know if the roofnest falcon can be installed over a fiberglass shell on my Nissan Frontier? The roofnest weighs 140 lbs plus the weight of two people so we are talking about 375 lbs total. I can't seem to get answers from their website. We currently sleep in the shell but a roofnest would be great to allow me to store everything in the shell and not have to take it all out every time we camp. Thats a massive rack you have on your vehicle. Not a standard roof rack.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it really depends on the shell. I think some are designed to take more weight. I am not sure I would feel comfortable with it but I do tend to overbuild everything :-) I would see if you can get some info from the shell manufacturer. Yep the rack is a frontrunner with a little extra length to extend over the whole roof. It definitely worked out for the roofnest.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. I wpuld ask roofnest if they have recomended torque specs. Based on the bolt size I am assuming around 30 ft pounds. there's no way i could get a torque wrench on mine so i just get them nice and snug but not super tight and use blue locktite. I also check them before any long ride. I hope that helps.

Frontrunner awnings, Rhino Rack, Ironman 4x4 etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have reached out to Roofnest for their recs but they have not made any recommendations. As you know the hardware compatibility is an issue. I want simple. I have an aftermarket over the bed cap roof rack made by US Rack.

    • @BradyAdventures

      I am not certain. My awning mounts directly to my rack. It's the alucab shadow awn and I would not recommend it since I think it is too heave to mount to the side of the roof nest. Best on the roofnest awning mounts I think you shouldn't have any problems mounting just about any standard awning but I would not recommend any of the 270 awnings. They might work but I would be worried about the stress on the tent itself. I know that doesn't really answer you questions. I would probably head to the facebook group and ask your question. There are lots of people on there with lots of different awnings mounted and I bet they'd give you a good idea. Good luck! facebook.com/groups/RoofnestFlock

    How was your decision made where to mount the awning (rack or tent)? Tent mount would be a little higher which seems nice, but then you're stuck to keeping the tent and awning together.

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel like this awning is way too heavy for the roof nest channels. It might work but I would worry that over time it would stress the tent and cause issues. 270 awnings like this are pretty heave and put a large load by the back corner. I mounted it to the rack long before I got the tent and never considered moving it. I hope that helps!

    I’m reading from other folks that the shorter (vs the taller) Frontrunner mounts keep the RTT too close to the rack, so cause some squeaking, etc from the tent hitting the rack when driving off road, etc. What is your experience?

    • @BradyAdventures
      @BradyAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I saw that also and was a little concerned about it. It ended up not being an issue with mine because the tent sits just inside the footprint of my rack. If the tent extended over the edge it would be very close to the lip of the rack I am guessing 3/4" of clearance. The frontrunner slats do tent to flex so I could imagine this happening especially if the tent were loaded with gear on top. However, I don't think mine flexes enough to make contact even if it did extend over the edge since I used 8 mounts instead of 4. This distributes the weight over 8 slats instead of 4 resulting less flex. I have watched the tent through the sunroof on bumpy roads and not seen much flex. If I had gotten the xl or the new model that's longer (5" longer) I think I would have still tried the low mounts since that look super nice. I hope that helps and good luck!
