      I got my truck camper right before the RV/camping/fauxverlanding craze took off. $1800 and I can take it off the beaten path while carrying a fridge full of food and drink, have a 4 burner stove plus oven to cook with, 3 beds, seating area, onboard water, and a full bathroom with shower. I couldn't care less about having a trendy image, this tent is more expensive than my truck and that's just foolish.

    I liked everything about this until he got to the price. For the price of that tent you could get a used car/station wagon and drive that around for camping. Sure, things cost money, but there should be a common sense limit after which it becomes unrealistic. $4,200 is too high.

      @@JayElement13 I'd actually assume that they use it frequently on the weekend for short trips if it stays put all the time, those tents cost a couple thousand and even if that's pocket change to someone that's still a lot of pocket change to just leave exposed to the elements for no good reason unless it gets used at least monthly.
      Now the empty roof basket remains a mystery to me. I see them Walmart parking lots everywhere, with no ladder to get up to them on 4runners and such. To high to use regularly on those large SUVs, and apparently to get back down once they've been mounted the first time for their one time use. Then the person figured out that roof basketss are a pain if you don't have a mounted ladder to reach them or a small enough vehicle that you can just reach yourself and now it's just a fashion accessory that holds more light bars.

      160lb rood load capacity means when the car is stationary with zero wind resistance.
      When you are travelling at 60 miles per hour into headwind, you could easily multiply that load factor easily by 2x-3x-4x, depending of course on it's aerodynamic profile, but the point is, some of you are missing some math and Physics into your thinking process.

    Here in New Zealand roof top tents are common additions but there are alternatives. My preference is for swags, which are awesome. Bivi bags are brilliant but they’re not for everyone. Free standing tents 🏕 are good alternatives to roof top mounted tents. A hammock with a basher sheet is a great option for simple setups in some environments if there’s a need to sleep off the floor. Each trip I just take whatever is most appropriate.

    I was just about to pull the trigger on this one. The money is steep but I was willing for the convenience of the extra little strap to pull everything in so I didn't have to tuck and fool with it. Wanted that easy pull down and be done. Then at 7:28A cut scene happens and it isn't shown the true time/effort it takes to Tuck and Fool. I'm willing to pay the price if I don't have to spend extra time to Fu... Fuss with it! Even after the cut scene, There is orange fabric beading still pinched in the shell after being closed. Not somewhere I want or rain/desert sand seeping in at. Another thing that doesn't sit just right with me is when the door is zipped down, I will have to climb on/over it. Is there a way to tuck that down between the mattress so knees aren't pulling out stitching? Otherwise I am quite happy with the design and want to buy one of these.

    4200 bones American?!?!? That's the price of a top tier kayak that's been fitted out to the nines with fish finders, paddle drive, lights, the works. An even then you'd probably still have some leftover bones for fancy rods, reels, and a ton of pricey lures. I think I'll pass on the tent and throw my bones down on some far more useful gear and just keep my extra thick foam sleep mat for the back of my SUV. Hey don't knock it until you've tried it. I've had some pretty relaxing and restful nights in the back of my Santa Fe on that foam matt.
    An on a side note, one time I woke up in the middle of the night with this eerie feeling someone was watching me. That's when I looked over to the rear hatch window and saw a freaking black bear peeping in on me. Everybody else go ahead and sleep outside and on top of your SUV. I'll stick with the safer alternative, its served me well thus far.

    So roughly 200 pounds for the weight of the tent and accessories. Plus 2 people and their gear. So pushing roughly 500-600 pounds on the roof bars and roof itself. Is that ok ? Looking at load ratings on a 2021 4 Runner and Jeep Cherokee they have a limit of 150 pounds evenly distributed. Don’t get me wrong, this thing is cool AF. But will it wreck your roof with all the weight ?

    • @gschweiger
      @gschweiger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check those ratings on the vehicles. It is usually a dynamic rating. So 150 in motion. It can be more static. However, this tent still seems quite heavy. Most roof rack dynamic ratings are around 150 pounds. The strengthened Outback Wilderness can take 220 dynamic.

    • @christopheringanji2493
      @christopheringanji2493 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Dynamic or static wunt matter that much since that vehicle will definitely have to move about with that weight on its roof, that roof wunt last long and i can imagine insurance wunt cover damage caused by it due to the weight.

    • @Roofnest
      @Roofnest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most roof racks are rated to either 150 lbs or 165 lbs - this is a "dynamic load rating" - this means that if you have a 160 lb canoe on your roof and you are going 75 MPH down the highway, the rack has to safely carry that load with all the wind drag and other forces acting on the roof rack. Not to mention if you have to swerve or slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. These loads can be tremendous! When you are parked, all the loading of the roof rack is static weight and the limit for the static weight carrying capacity can be up to 7 times the dynamic rating. 600 lbs of tent and people are no problem for any modern car with a modern roof rack properly installed.

So when I drive under a low branch and it catches on the clamp it will release? I guess I could lock them and then see if the branch rips the clamp mounts off the unit instead.

      It’s a quality tent, and it’s the only one you need to buy. If you’re in the rooftop camping it looks pretty solid. You’re right though, in my head I think I was willing to pay about half that.

    Most roof racks have a weight rating of 100 to 200 lbs. I wouldn’t trust the weight of the tent plus the weight of a person on top of vehicle.

    • @jlwagon
      @jlwagon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dynamic weight (while the vehicle is in motion) and static weight (while the vehicle is at a standstill) are very different. Most modern vehicles have a dynamic weight capacity of 165 pounds. The frame of the vehicle while standing still can easily hold the rtt and one or two average Americans. The problem I saw in the video is the weight of the rtt is 165 lbs and then he suggested adding a kayak or something else that would easily go over the dynamic limits of pretty much every stock vehicle roof rack system on the road. A very dangerous suggestion in my opinion.

    This is the 2nd video I’ve seen where Tim says the bottom is aluminum - It is not. It is a textured sheet of polyblahblah. I don’t know what it is but it’s NOT aluminum. And I’m surprised they didn’t tuck in the tent material for the video. Also, the finance company they use is something called BREAD which given that my credit score is around 820 and they were going to give me a rate of 14.5% might be called USERY or a “criminal enterprise” in some places. I own the tent and I love it, but don’t believe the glossy promos.

    So 175lbs plus possible weight on top of the tent like solar panels and over landing gear, then weight of two adults... better make sure your vehicle's roof and roof rack rails and cross bars can hold the weight. Dents and holes in your vehicle's roof would suck. You could easily have 500 to 600lbs plus up there.

I’d advise you get 10 friends and buy in bulk from Alibaba and get the exact same thing for 1/4 the price. You can see the fabric sticking out of the side so don’t tell me about quality control.

    Had 2 carts open the day I ordered mine and yup I checked out with the wrong cart. Ended up ordering a Roofnest Sparrow Adventure versus this one which is the one I wanted. Needless to say, roofnest adds shipping into their pricing so when I called and said I ordered the wrong tent by mistake then asked what to do about fixing the issue, I was told I would have to eat the $700. Decided to try out the Sparrow adventure while listing it for sale lightly used and here I am 7 months later trying to find someone to buy my sparrow for $2900 while our country is in an economic crisis lol - Either way, I WILL get this falcon though because the engineering and design features are top notch and you can attach all your basics to it.

    I understand that Roofnest probably sponsored the video, and that's nice. But, the suggestion of throwing more weight on top of an already maxed out dynamic capacity could be a liability issue. Especially if a kayak and the rtt get ripped off a vehicle while traveling down the highway and thrown into a minivan full of children. Not a lawsuit anyone would want to deal with. Is it wise to keep this video up?
