For the record the squeak and clunks are cleared up and it rides amazingly smooth, and yes typically the control arms are $475 but I was able to grab them as “returns” for $350... Not exactly cheap but I’m not much of a bar goer and no kids so gotta have something to blow money on! Also I get the vibe I should swing by dunkin and grab some coffee to drop off or something next time I am in the area.

Good tip. Also, if you ever go to a quick lube type place you may as well go ahead and replace them because either they're going to overfill them and blow them or never fill them at all.
We would leave a half sheet for the next guy in. That was for everyone in the shop. One guy in particular seemed to always leave the TP empty. Paper towels were the same way. We would actively work to try and catch him being the next one to find only a half sheet of each.

Our 2006 Chevy Express 3500 was taken into the shop multiple times for an alignment to fix the bad camber. Never got fixed, per your recommendation, I looked at the little plastic things. They were still in there. Thanks, Tires Plus.
I took a 92 Bonneville to Tires plus 4 an alignment. It's not exactly a new car. It was pulling to one side. They finish it and I take it for a spin. Still pulling to one side although slightly better. So take it back they check it and adjust it again. Then I test drive it And it's still pulling like it was. So I take it back 3rd time and they say they can't do anything with it take it to another store on the other side of town. I've never been back
A shop I worked at, a few years back, did alignments for another shop down the road. They brought one to us one day and I was the lucky one to do the alignment. They had replaced the outer tie rods (I believe some other things as well, doesn't matter) not only did they NOT free up the jam nuts but they manage to round BOTH of them off! Needless to say I was not a happy fella! Torches, vise grips, what have you to try to adjust the jeezless things, not to mention the shop manager barking at me asking what's taking so damn long. HEY THERE Eric,,,,, I just stumbled across your video about the upper control arms & Tie Rod ends.....You are an excellent Mechanic and you don't give yourself enough credit ...!!! Also, I just want you to know that this video helped me a bunch changing my upper control arms on my 1988 Chevy K-1500 4x4 Off Road Edition Silverado....!!! Thanks a bunch Eric O. Steven Capizzi Columbus, Ohio USA
I've used long straight boards held against the tires to set the toe by measuring side to side to spots on the boards the diameter of the wheel apart. I set the boards on 2 jack stands on each side snug to the tire. The alignment shop did not need to change the toe the last time I did this.
When I worked at GM I found that if these trucks had a 3" lift or a 2" lift you could replace the control arms with out removing the strut. If not you'd be fighting the spring. If I remember correctly.
The only noise my 06 Silverado ever makes sounds like a flock of birds chirping. That's how I know the top front shock nuts are loose or to replace the shocks. No need to have scheduled maintenance, the birds serve as a reminder. Otherwise, it's superbly quiet. I do clean the entire underside yearly and hose it down with a light mineral oil based product. I don't live in a rust prone area, for clarification.
You got a awesome family there dude n the Mrs. O. I am a ole paradog n wondered how different my life would have been if I had a dad like you. Hope your kids realize how lucky they are. When removing the axle bearing without a remover, I partially remove the three bolts and hit each bolt with an air hammer and the bearing assembly comes right out, even on vehicles with over 300,000 miles of Michigan rust. Just a tip!
I was watching this while catching up on email and such this morning. While you were reinstalling those cam bolts in the UCA, I absentmindedly reached down for a napkin and started wiping my hands. Your videos pull in the viewer so well that I needed to wipe the grease from my fingers. Now I feel the urge to run over to Napa (not a sponsor)
Yup they are clunkers for sure . Honestly though I just traded in my 2010 GMC Sierra 4x4 , it had 208,000 miles and was still running strong ...... Biggest problem with GM is trying to stay ahead of the rust .
Ive always felt the same way when I use a torque wrench. Nothing ever “feels” tight enough 😂 . It was even worse when I moved to the electronic snap on tech angle torque wrenches. I’ve had to slowly train myself to just quit doubting and forget about it.
Her been watching for a few years really enjoy the way you explain the steps needed to make a repair job easy thanks for your time and effort to film it and put on here 👍 Am about to do my upper and lower ball joints on a 2017 chevy silverado and I kinda use your videos to help me get the job done without fighting with something I probably didn't realize was supposed to come off first or didn't have to take off thanks again for making life easier lol
Bought the fancy wrenches for those alignment bolts and quit working before I got them. RETIRED! Covid hit a week after I quit. Been watching TV every day since March.
The way I heard it was use the brackets and to also zip tie the wires elsewhere if they need it etc. no way I’d just be zip tying those important lines.
The ball joint check at 2500 miles is probably because many people put massively oversized tires on... stressing the ball joint... which is old school bolt in to ease frequent replacement... That service reccomendation may also be liability related
I see a lot of trucks driving sideways down the highway, especially with lifts. I'm sure when they put blocks on the rear end they do a number on the thrust angle.
He spent all that money on fancy crap but yet the undercarriage is rotting like a sunken battle ship. He's gotta get that thing oiled ASAP. Great content Mr. O. As usually. The kids are getting huge. Been watching for a few years. Be safe.
I would recommend using knipex raptor pliers instead of vice grips instead for grabbing the inner tie rod. It will keep from putting the "teeth" marks in the tie rod.
I did a 3" lift on my Yukon my wheels were camber out the shop that I went to couldn't align it so I installed those upper control arms and they solved my problem.
Since I started driving cars legally at age 16 oh, I have always told them to straighten the steering wheel when the align it. It should be common sense but I think it's just pure laziness. For the record I'm 63 now.
I'm an alingment guy, since 1981, and I get steering wheels straight using nothing more than a drive - over toe gauge. Takes a few short road tests, but beats spending 40K for a rack.
If you continue to hear a clunks going over bumps or when suspension is moderately articulated, it could be leaf springs rubbing. Took me forever to find it on my Silverado. You can recreate the clunk by forcefully shaking bed side to side. Chevy’s fix is greasing in between the springs. The best fix is cutting an inner tube, prying springs apart, and placing rubber in between the springs.

Yep because generally they are up to no good

Am about to do my upper and lower ball joints on a 2017 chevy silverado and I kinda use your videos to help me get the job done without fighting with something I probably didn't realize was supposed to come off first or didn't have to take off thanks again for making life easier lol
Love your work dude, keep it up happy new year to you, your family and everyone watching this video 😃
Tow truck operators usually aren't the most healthiest, and yes we love ❤ coffee and donuts 😋
Free tip Tuesday, the old double wrench trick.
He riding nice now...with a South Main Auto touch💯🔥
Awesome. And I haven't even watched it yet.
Bought the fancy wrenches for those alignment bolts and quit working before I got them. RETIRED! Covid hit a week after I quit. Been watching TV every day since March.
High dollar control arms with zip ties......
🤣🤣🤣
I was thinking the same thing zip ties really all that money and you can't tac weld a nut on it for the lines
Any directions that tell you to zip tie anything is questionable about the product right? Or is that just me
The way I heard it was use the brackets and to also zip tie the wires elsewhere if they need it etc. no way I’d just be zip tying those important lines.
gm owners are not know for brains
The ball joint check at 2500 miles is probably because many people put massively oversized tires on... stressing the ball joint... which is old school bolt in to ease frequent replacement... That service reccomendation may also be liability related
I see a lot of trucks driving sideways down the highway, especially with lifts. I'm sure when they put blocks on the rear end they do a number on the thrust angle.
The dogleg is from hitting something hard. And a resulting misalignment.
That's known as dog tracking. If the alignment isn't done right or they replaced tierods or a rear axle is off kilter. It will do that.
He spent all that money on fancy crap but yet the undercarriage is rotting like a sunken battle ship. He's gotta get that thing oiled ASAP. Great content Mr. O. As usually. The kids are getting huge. Been watching for a few years. Be safe.
Jay... if he kicks cameras, imagine what he does to dogs, and the elderly. LOL
😂
It’s like we have won the lottery back to back dr.O vids!!👍👍👍👍
I remember the days when after market parts were definitely a no go at South Main Auto...
I would recommend using knipex raptor pliers instead of vice grips instead for grabbing the inner tie rod. It will keep from putting the "teeth" marks in the tie rod.
Intermediate steering shaft... Next.
I did a 3" lift on my Yukon my wheels were camber out the shop that I went to couldn't align it so I installed those upper control arms and they solved my problem.
Eric O', I was hoping to see your new Winter JEEP hat. I just always referred to you from day one as "the guy with the JEEP hat".
Good show, I particularly enjoyed the nod comment to PowerNation. Big fan of that.
Come on Eric, Thor needs his own music!
FACTORY STRUTS..SPRING GETS IN THE WAY...HAVE TO PULL STRUT TO GET CAM BOLTS OUT....NICE JOB!!
Wont be long til your sayin, "I cant believe this kid is old enough to drive. " cheers O's
got a trick for those essentric pins if ya wanna try it out, works better than the press in pins no welding needed, and allot more stout
The “Team” in the other bay seemed to have quieted down after the “Ballet Class” question was an OKed. Did the boys go too?
Ball joint and brake videos. And pulling gasktanks out are the best kinds of videos. Keep up the good work!
The alignment shops in my town can’t even get the steering wheel straight
Since I started driving cars legally at age 16 oh, I have always told them to straighten the steering wheel when the align it. It should be common sense but I think it's just pure laziness. For the record I'm 63 now.
Eventually you ve got to deal with the alignment guys.
🤣
I'm an alingment guy, since 1981, and I get steering wheels straight using nothing more than a drive - over toe gauge. Takes a few short road tests, but beats spending 40K for a rack.
I’ve never had an alignment shop get my steering wheel straight
If you continue to hear a clunks going over bumps or when suspension is moderately articulated, it could be leaf springs rubbing. Took me forever to find it on my Silverado. You can recreate the clunk by forcefully shaking bed side to side. Chevy’s fix is greasing in between the springs. The best fix is cutting an inner tube, prying springs apart, and placing rubber in between the springs.
Even better is to get some thin sheet UHMW poly and put that between the leaves. Makes them glide and improves the ride.
