second hand Rolex is always with risk especially if it is a few years old there's a chance the watch has been repaired, polished, different box/ papers, replaced dial, hands, bracelet and so on. The second hand Rolex market can be risky.

That OP was the last watch I ever saw available for purchase in the window at the AD. I was even offered a discount on it but did not buy it.
So glad I'm back in Los Angeles after my trip to Japan. The streets are filthy over there, people throwing garbage on the ground and the homeless are everywhere. Also crime is so high over there I felt unsafe.

Visited the same stores looking at the watches. Was looking for a date just or GMT II but found the prices too high. Would have enjoyed seeing in person how you approach these places.
Thanks for the tour. All cities have areas of lowlife I suppose. The seller in the first shop will not sell those watches easily. In UK prices have probably already fallen under his asking. Happy New Year!!
Your cautionary tale is the reason why trusted grey market dealers have little to fear with the exception of ADs dropping prices during a very competitive market in favor of consumers.
Welcome to my town Fukuoka. Oyafuko-st is the shame of Fukuoka,it's embarrassing.
There are two more geeky pre-owned watch shops in the Tenjin area, also Two Rolex retailers and three department store watch floors are also worth seeing.
I'll have to check out those other shops next time. I used to live in Fukuoka - great place!

Fully appreciate how a 'full set' should really mean a full set, if that's how the package is represented. But as you suggest, the secondary vendor may not even know (even though he/she should know) what the full set consisted of, including the spring-bar/screw slot tool, and less important, the anchor (on certain dive models) and bezel protector. Paramount, however, is that the original serial papers are included that match the case serial number, or at least an official dated RSC service card which of course also contains the serial number. True, without the 'full' set, the package is worth somewhat less. I say 'somewhat' because I don't think it would be worth a whole lot less as long as legitimate serial papers are present in one form or another. Great, entertaining review!
The UKis always the most expensive for watches and the VTNR is 21,000 GBP or 25,000 USD. I thought Japan was cheaper for watches?

when the stock market drops another 20% this year and bitcoin is down to 10k, well see way lower prices. I bought my Rolex Sub in 2000 at an AD and got a 10% discount. I think this will come back so dont buy and pay over AD prices folks...just wait.

It'll make it easier to sell, and much more desirable to potential buyers, if you decide to get out of it. All else being equal, it's better to have it than not.

Good eyes, but yes that's real. It's an Oysterquartz. They made them for a couple of decades before discontinuing the line.
Just think if they put out trash cans!!! What a nightmare it is walking around in Japan after having consumed a beverage only to find there's virtually NO place to deposit it! You either have to pop back into a 7-11/Family Mart type place or, as I found, stealthily drop it into a bicycle basket.
What about a new Rolex? Is it any easier to get hold of a new SS ROlex from an AD in Japan (as compared to the US)?
It's much much harder here in Japan. There's zero chance unless you have a purchase history, and there are no pieces in the stores to build a purchase history.

Those ladies pieces are also unavailable. There is absolutely nothing in the display cases except for exhibition pieces.

Buying Secondhand Rolex in Japan can guarantee Authentic watches? Since, I don't know how to check if it's legit or not. Thanks
Japan is safe, so you really don't need to worry. But that said, besides the education aspect of knowing what you're looking at, I advocate taking it to a Rolex Service Center at some point for an overhaul/ They'll inspect the the parts, and make sure it's not on their list of stolen watches.

It really is - I can't imagine laying out that kind of money for one of those GMTs. Still, when you look on Rakuten there are even pricier ones. I can't explain it, other than people here are willing to pay that premium for the guarantee of an authentic piece. I know I wouldn't want to send almost 30 grand to somebody outside of Japan for the promise of an authentic Pepsi. That said, I really don't think people are forking out the money for these, and grey market dealers are going to have to lower prices. But they are holding out I think, hoping that things turn around.
